Nice work on the plumbing repair.

Man. It has to be annoying to have to attempt to buy a replacement filter housing that is 25YO, but ... they have to be somewhere, I guess.

On topic, the biggest ‘beef’ that I have when working with PVC is the incredible smell that the primer/cement combo makes. From the last little project I did, I had that smell stuck in my nose for a couple days (perhaps I am a wimp)... I’d bet you’re still stuck with that smell for a bit.

Anyhow, I really enjoy watching your projects/posts.

We are getting killed with the snow.
Prediction is snow till tomorrow.

Raspberry Pi would be good to monitor things, one plan is to monitor temp and humidity and turn a fan on for my seedlings and there is a moisture % that you can use thinking about that.

So I am on a plan would be a great day to work on Linux but the current program is
Shoveling, medication and hot tub repeat.

So last night at the rink they had a first time referee do the 8 to 12 younger house league he lost control, it is a combo of travel kids (good players) and first timers. Well the good player were hitting the lesser players even though it a no check league. So two of the parent coaches went outside to settle things. Makes you really wonder about parents, and the coach was directing his player to hit back.

Then last week I bitched about too many spectators at game, current covid rules do not allow specatators at sports events. So many you can't keep a 6 foot distance. I was told it not my problem, but it was my job to enforce the mask rule. Then last Tuesday the owner walks in with mask not covering his nose, I can't win with idiots.

Needless to say I went and sat in my truck with heat and radio on.

Bob know how you feel. I just got through installing a 200 lb cast iron sink while screwed into a hole half my size with a Sawzall and a drill; P trap stuck in my ear having to tell Ginny three times during the course of the project not to flush the toilet while I was under there. Went back to the hardware store three times to buy the same basin strainer etc. Once was for a real basin wrench. Finally finished the kitchen remodel; check it out. Bobby
Bobby, that's a massive job you are doing in the kitchen. I love the plank countertop and that clamping system is neat.

Back in '98 (the start of every old man story I heard in my childhood) I tore out the soft tile floors in the entry hall, great room and kitchen and put down Pergo. While I was at it, re-did the kitchen counter and sink. At the time Home Depot had these high-end Expo stores and I found a neat tile-in cast iron sink. Tiling the counter was easy and involved rough sanding the Formica, painting on an adhesion promoter and then tile adhesive. As I recall the cast iron sink was about my weight and I was pretty sure it was going to do me in. With the sink and tile at the same level it's easy to wipe the counters and not have stuff pile up around a raised edge of the sink. Kohler no longer makes this tile-in sink and the one they offer has rounded corners.

Looks like you’re up to elbow in plumbing fun. Nice saw.
I wonder if the “have to buy a ladder and scaffolding “ would get me out of chores.

Stewart, it's my favorite (of the four) reciprocating saw.
You are welcome to try that statement but don't blame me if it doesn't work - Liane doesn't like me on ladders (I don't hold on so it makes her nervous).

Bob, I grew up on cheap hard plastic plates as many clumsy kids were at home, the bursar on the other hand was using fine china during her formative years. When I moved out mom gave me a few hand me down dishes all plastic. Before getting married we went shopping together and I was showing her corelle. I picked one up from the display and tossed it across the floor, she expressed shock that I did so and it didn't break! Great stuff never bought any!
Bugnut, I ate off the cheap A&P 'china' plates in my youth but in my teens a set of fine china and sterling silver showed up for special occasions. When we lived in the travel trailer those three summers the plates were Melmac. The plates were made by American Cyanamid so I thought they contained cyanide. Turns out it was melatline mixed with formaldehyde. But they were unbreakable. I was able to shatter a Corelle dish preparing a meal. Didn't smash the plate, just tapped a serving spoon a bit too hard and I had a nice collection of deadly shards in the roast beef with smashed potatoes.
between pool and sprinklers you've had to become a PVC plumbing expert. very nice work and hopefully that fix will outlast you. Well done!!
Drives, not sure expert is the right term. With a large supply of extra PVC fittings I eventually produce an acceptable balloon-like animal.
Bob, if you would like to try it out, I can supply everything you need. I have a couple of black powder pistols and adequate supplies for them. The recoil from a properly loaded pistol is actually very gentle. Far less than a 9mm. Although it's quite a while since I shot them, I find it a far more pleasant and affordable experience than shooting any other guns.

Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Andrew, I would frighten a novice with my skill with firearms. My father-in-law used the pistol as a toy in his childhood so I suspect there is some strange stuff in the barrel. I have no clue how to ensure it is safe to fire. But I am definitely tempted....:rocketwho
Bob, nice work on the plumbing. Is your filter filting again?
Kay, a trip to Lowe's blew the best part of the day yesterday but I managed to get it back together today. It is filting overnight and to my surprise not one of the fittings, including the three unions, is leaking.
Ah, plumbing and Corelle, two topics worthy of discussion!

Bob, like you, I use Pinch a Penny for some pool things. I have a Hayward 'smart' pool pump which probably has a computer circuitry which could have landed Apollo in the Sea of Tranquility in 1969. I bought it online instead of at Pinch a Penny, and I saved probably $400; the first 'smart' Hayward pump I bought was probably $1,300 not including taxes. I think it lasted about 6 years. When I tried to disassemble it to see about replacing the leaky parts, it disintegrated as the powder coat flaked off the cast aluminum parts in sheets.

The replacement is doing OK, and like you I also used unions. Cross my fingers, they aren't leaking and I haven't had to replace the components, yet. I have a large pleated paper cartridge filter, which I rinse-out when I think of it. I do that < 1 X month. At the suggestion of the Pinch a Penny service tech, I tried running the filter w/o a cartridge, to see what kind of pressure it made, and saw no big difference. I might buy a Hayward filter cartridge from Pinch a Penny just to throw them a bone (I buy liquid chlorine there by the multiple-gallon) but I'm considering a new Hayward pool robot as our Ultra has ceased climbing the walls, and I've rebuilt the innards multiple times. I'd say we've gotten our $'s worth out of it. I suspect it's close-to 10 y.o.

Corelle, I tried once the 'trick' of dropping a plate onto the floor, to show 'how-durable it is,' only to have it break into many sharp pieces! As a kid I toured both Corning Glass Works and Stuben, as an adult, I ate years'-worth of meals off Corelle, having been cooked in Farberware. Tomorrow I'm donating my probably 45+ year-old Farberware to the Goodwill store, my wife prefers All-Clad, and Fiesta Ware dinnerware. I like the Fiesta Ware colors (mixed).
Philip, it is probably from all those years at IBM but I am drifting away from 'smart' things. This simple filter and pump system has been on a mechanical timer since we moved in almost 25 years ago (similar setup in previous house for 21 years). I've replaced the pump motor once in those 46 years and this is the first filter I've had to replace. We had a GE hybrid water heater for three years before they gave up on fixing it (it had a one year warranty but GE had to fix it multiple times for the same problem for two more years). A plain Rheem 50-gallon electric sits in its place. Same with the Carrier super duper A/C system and programmable thermostat. Instead of spending $1,000 or more to replace the computer controlled variable speed blower motor, I spent $2,600 (cash) for a complete Ruud system with a four button thermostat (up/down temperature, fan on/auto and heat/cool/off).

The Corelle dishes are harder than most to break but when they do break they are the most dangerous broken plate messes I've seen.

Nice work on the plumbing repair.

Robey5, thanks for stopping by. I would have repaired the old filter housing but the cartridge they use is getting harder to find. Home Depot used to have a bunch in stock but last time I looked they only had the sticker on the shelf where they should have been.

The smell from the PVC cleaner/primer/cement is normally not too bad because it's mostly outside projects but using it under a sink can be overpowering. In addition, I end up using a fair bit of acetone when doing fiberglass repairs. It will also clean up fresh epoxy pretty well. I'm more annoyed by the purple stains the primer leaves everywhere -- clothes, concrete, pipes and anything else within ten feet of the job.

We are getting killed with the snow.

Michael, they are predicting a low of 42°F tonight and when I went outside to check the pool filter it smelled like it was going to snow (not sure what it is but once you smell it, it's hard to forget).

I was lucky in high school. None of the sports I participated in were popular (soccer, wrestling and track) so few parents showed up to watch or harass the participants. Went to a few soccer matches to see my grandchildren play and my daughter and her husband were the nightmare parents you describe. Every game was followed by video replays at home to go over where the boys screwed up.

I wear a mask and face shield, 7-mil black nitrile glove and carry a 3-ounce bottle of 70% alcohol. I was surprised to see 99% of the people at Lowe's yesterday wearing their masks (1% had their noses exposed). I was also surprised by all the people who stopped to help me load up, inside and outside the store. I decided not to change into my "going out among the English" clothes so I probably looked like I lived in our 17-year-old PT Cruiser.

The pool side of the filter having a superfluous coupling made my slight OCD twitchy so I replaced one side of the union and made up a new piece that allowed the filter to move closer to the edge.
attachment.php

That small move allowed the pump side to line up perfectly without having to cut the gray pipe. The pump to filter run is also squared off better.
attachment.php

I had the opportunity to flip the drain valve over to the pump side of the line so the liquid chlorine jugs are clear. I'm pretty happy with the way it worked out. Even happier there wasn't even a tiny leak in the system.
attachment.php

While I was in Lowe's I managed to grab a few pieces of wood for the workbenches so I can start putting the shed back together. Three ten-foot 2x6 boards wouldn't fit in the PT Cruiser with the hatch closed so I brought a tape measure, speed square and the M12 circular saw and made six 5-foot boards in the parking lot. Ever try to find someone to cut lumber at Lowe's on a Sunday? Not a problem if you bring your own tools.

Bob, really got a chuckle from the Melmac comment. Hadn't thought of that since the kids were watching ALF!
Bugnut, my Melmac memories are from the 50s when smoking was cool and drunk driving was a sport. I spent the early '60s scouring junk yards for parts and remember how a slightly dented car exterior came with a Texas Chainsaw Massacre interior. I had to buy seat belts at Sears to put in our '47 Ford. The good old days for those of us who survived.

Hi Bob, I haven’t stopped by for a while.

Good call on using the unions, I used them on my pool piping years ago and it’s paid off. I’ll soon be using them when I remove the pump to change the mechanical seal.

I was in the area, but no time. But feel assured that I stopped by your local water utility to make sure there running OK.:lol_hitti, so when you need to fill that pool, they’ll have plenty of capacity.

Hey, I changed a toilet supply valve and it didn’t leak, usually I’m rebuilding the thing like you did, making a few trips for just one more fitting.:lol_hitti

I always bring the tape, square, and saw when I pick up lumber now. I had to pick up so 16' 2x6's one day and precariously strap them to my truck with no racks. I ordered them online for curbside pickup and had planned to bring a trailer to pick them up. Lowes was so slow and it took several days for the order to be ready. By the time I went to pick them up, I thought I was getting 8' lengths. Whoops.

Craig, one of these days Palm Beach County is going to let me schedule an appointment for COVID shots. The website says not to bother because they already have more appointments than vaccine. Looks like Publix might get a supply one of these days.

Thanks for checking on my water supply. Apparently they had enough for me to run two hoses for a half hour to bring the water back up to skimmer level.

I have enough PVC fittings on hand to do 90% of the needed repairs but for some reason 100% of my repairs need at least one fitting I don't have.

Mike, I should have a Home Depot/Lowe's go bag with those things in it. I already have a glove strapped to one of the D-rings in the PT Cruiser so I can pick up concrete blocks without shredding my hand,

Liane wanted to take a picture of the dog and borrowed my little Canon point and shoot. She rarely takes photos but really likes this one and asked to keep it. It's a red Canon PowerShot SX410 IS (I kept leaving my black cameras behind at the kids' houses). I've had it for more than 4 years and I paid $138 for a factory reconditioned one from Canon. It was cheap enough that I didn't worry about using it in the garage or shop. I don't need 20 megapixels for my poorly composed shots and I don't ever need 40X optical zoom but it's nice to know it's there.
attachment.php

I'm used to the camera so just for $hits and Giggles I looked for another one online. Egads, these cameras are selling for $229 and up. Well, someone isn't impressed and is selling theirs for $49.49 with free shipping. It arrived in the mail the other day and it works perfectly. It's black so I'll be able to lose it more easily.

I believe in the rule of three when it comes to breakdowns. It was the 1) shower head, 2) guest toilet and 3) pool pump so I was feeling relaxed. Liane came in from her daily inspection of the grounds and said my carport was falling down. I immediately went out to see the disaster and it was the pole that bent in the last hurricane. I had straightened it but there was a weak spot where it bent. Moved it from the end position to the middle position but the finish was cracked at the bend. Over time the pole rusted and all the stiff breezes we've had for the past week snappit off at the bend [the tree trunk that looks like it is attached is far behind the carport.]
attachment.php

My first thought involved a welder but the pipe is so thin and so rusty it would be a nightmare to weld it back together. Then I remembered I have a bunch of wood scraps, including shovel handles and closet rod dowels. Turns out a few passes on a piece of closet rod makes a perfect insert After the crimped ends of the pipe fragments are removed.
attachment.php

A couple of self-tapping screws and the job is done. Less than a half hour from start to finish.

From the "Damn You Sakurama" side of the Garage Journal, a really cool LED light made its way to my house. Others have purchased this fixture, which is dimmable and color adjustable and mounts on a 1/4-20 bolt. Sakurama set the benchmark with a flexible stalk mount that seemed like overkill for someone like me. I bought a pack of hanger bolts and screwed one into the shelf over my movable workshop bench. Hanger bolts are a half wood thread / half machine thread screw (in the bag).
attachment.php

It uses a camera battery or a 12V brick (I have a number of them in my collection). Turn the knob to adjust the brightness and press the knob to adjust the color from 3300K to 5600K.
attachment.php

I like the way the big square light floods the area below the light but I can turn it down so it doesn't blind me.

Amazon is out of stock on this model but they have a little larger one available.

I have had a slew of WTF experiences at HD. I don't wear orange on any part of body, the only orange coat I have is from Parks Dept I use it when I shovel snow.
But I got yelled at and berated because I would not operate the power saw for him, needed some material cut. Other time a couple yelled at me for not getting stuff down and loading their cart, they were half my age.
I have had a few that were persistent, so I explain I am a consultant and I charge for my time. We start at 100$ how are you going to pay cash or credit card. That will send them away.
I do help people on occasion but you can't act like I have to. I asked one why are you asking me and not an employee, response was you look like you know what your doing.

We are up in Boston area (Dorchester) and been driving a bit and wife was feeling sick and went to use a bathroom in Kohls. This lady comes up and offers her money thinking she is homeless. My wife wanted to show her the rings she was wearing but didn't want to get robbed. You could buy a house in some locals with the rings. I tease her on occasion that she should get a cup at least we would not have to pay taxes on it.

I have about ten hours in shoveling so far more coming on Friday, killed two shovels. But tonight I teach the Adult Hockey Clinic which is fun and a good work out.

If I was closer I would weld that pole for you, might even have the poles in stock.

Love the take your own tools solution, done it myself.

Our large equivalent hardware store can be infuriating as whenever you ask a question it is not that person’s department

Nice fix on the post.

And even better catch on the camera.

I stopped buying cameras quite a few years ago as I found they did not like the garage or other working areas.

Conversely, all the last 5 plus years photos are just taken on my mobile phone, which is also long since “Obsolete”

I do love a good tool.

Nice fix Bob but unless you paint the wood to match the building inspector will write you up then send the report to the neighborhood association. When the Architect's union finds you have no license there could be another issue. Oh and don't forget to have it sprayed for termites. :dunno:

Michael, once again I have an advantage. No one asks the guy who probably killed Richard Kimball's wife for help in stores that sell chainsaws. I neglected to mention the final straw. I paid for my lumber with a credit card and headed for the exit. A young Lowe's employee ran up to me with a couple of wadded up $20 bills and asked if I dropped them. I keep my money in my wallet and make sure they are all face-up and smallest denominations at the front of the pack. If this had happened in my youth I would have taken the money and thanked her. Instead I said: "I's not mine, consider it a tip for being an essential worker."

Liane, like your wife, is sometimes mistaken for a needy person. She was cleaning out her closet and had a bag of clothes to donate. Went to the church a few blocks away (they were having an event) and handed a woman the garbage bag full of designer clothes (thrift store finds). She wasn't wearing her jewelry and was wearing her clean-out-the-closet clothes. As she was leaving, a woman gave her a paper bag full of food (gummint cheese and canned goods). Talk about embarrassed (but not too embarrassed to bring the food home). I'm the one with the diamonds and per my father-in-law's instructions I never take the ring off unless I'm headed for surgery.

No shoveling snow here but I did turn on the 200W heater in the shed. It holds a 20-degree temperature differential so 66° inside when it's 46° outside.

I appreciate the offer to weld the pole but I didn't want to put a lot of work or money into the pole. I bought the carport more than 3 years ago for less than $100 and I don't expect it to last a lot longer. I would feel terrible cutting up an almost new pole along with all the old stuff.

Rian, thanks for taking time to visit. I would be AWOL (or AWP - Away Without Permission) if that S10 was in my driveway.

I didn't notice the three 10-foot boards I chose had no barcode tags. At checkout the woman picked up the phone and asked for a person to do a price/code check. After 30 seconds my life was flashing behind my eyes so I told her I'd get a tag off another board in the pile. The pile was 20 feet away and she managed to check two people out in that time. No one said a word but in these times I suspect I escaped death from the mob in line . The lumber is at the far end of the store with one cashier -- a long walk to the other checkout lines.

I am uncomfortable taking pictures with the phone. I don't feel like I have a good grip on it and most of my grandchildren have cracked screens on their phones. Mine is a Samsung Galaxy J3, "underwhelming even for a budget phone" (I paid $150 for it). I don't like carrying a phone so it's rarely in reach. I took what I thought was two photos of the new screw in the Civil War pistol but it turns out I took six. This is the best of the six:

The Canon took a similar photo but it decided it needed a flash:

Having two identical cameras means I can shoot a photo without stressing my feeble brain.
Nice job all around. Sounds like you're really hitting your stride in getting jobs done.
Thank you Kirk, I feel like I've broken through my funk about getting stuff done. Now I just need to finish up with all these medical people. Wednesday was shot getting three new teeth screwed into my head and today is shot getting Liane to the eye doctor, hopefully with no screws involved.

Bobby, there goes my Saturday!. Maybe I should be done with it and replace all six legs with elegantly turned wooden poles made from branches harvested from the Mahogany out front and the Oaks out back. Our homeowner association sent us an invitation to join an e-mail list. I joined and that's the last I heard from anyone about a HOA. Damn, I forgot about those Architects. Then again, they approved the lean-to addition my neighbor erected :)

Don’t forget Property Appraiser. I’m sure they need to reassess your taxes for property improvements.

Stewart, I'm hoping the Property Appraiser won't notice my huge improvement while he's calculating the value of the Bunker across the street.

You have advantage most of us don't have. Almost would like to see a video of you hanging wallpaper. Very sure you would have an amusing approach.

I limp more or less limped since HS I don't notice it when I ski or skate.
But people and first impressions a bunch of years ago right after my knee surgery I asked a group of guys who were looking for players if I could play. The response was you limp we don't think you can you keep up with us? So no thanks. A few months later I was on the ice before that charter teaching a clinic. The guy who said no was in shock when he realized I skated better than anyone in their charter. They started to ask me to play but I said I didn't want to accidentally hurt somebody. There is a group on Tuesday nights former pro's and occasionally a current passing through. When I play I play with them they make me work.

But the problem I am having at moment is I am getting a growth right behind my big toe on both feet. For about the last year it hurt for five minutes when I crushed it flat in my carbon fiber skates. Then during the adult clinic it hurt the whole two hours on ice. I am going to head out and see if I can get a custom made pair. Better than surgery.

I don't wear rings if I have had my wedding ring on for more than 30 minutes I would be impressed.

Actually if you were closer I would give you framing for one, had it over ten years it is not moving anywhere.

Bob I am amazed at just about everything you do and accomplish. But to find out you are keeping a smartphone from 2016 alive (I think) is an amazing feat in itself. I still have my last 4 phones. 2 have become dedicated music players. One in the garage and one in the shed.

The phone in the shed is a Samsung galaxy S7 from 2017 and I can barely get it to run Spotify and find a wifi signal this is less than 30 feet away. It's always a good day when it connects and I can play music out there. :D

Stewart, I look forward to your arrival. I expect the concrete header and beams at the top of the walls to be poured this week and the roof trusses have been delivered. It should be dried in by March 1 but move-in might be the March 1 that comes after this next Christmas.

Michael, nine months after I lost my arm we moved from Long Island to our home in the Hudson Valley and I started my new job as a technical writer. I got along with my new office-mates but they were a little stand-offish. I guessed it was the eye patch and hook but I could be wrong. At home I was doing dirt cheap home improvement projects, including papering the walls in the kitchen (staircase ceiling came later). It was the '60s so we wanted paneling but settled for heavy vinyl wall covering in faux wood grain. At work I mentioned I was doing the wall covering job and went back to work. The next day one of the guys made a terrible joke and another guy said: "That's as funny as a one-armed paper hanger!" and I couldn't help myself. Made a sad face and said: "You really know how to hurt a guy" and the tension was broken for the rest of the nine years I worked there.

We all have pre-conceived notions about abilities. If you are whole with no limitations you assume anything less is debilitating. I remind people of that time their arm or leg was in a cast and how quickly they adapted. On the other hand, some people are clueless. A woman approached me in Walgreens to tell me she knew what my life was like -- she lost her pinkie! Had to smile and tell her she was brave to fight through her disability and live with a custom doeskin glove.

Sounds like you have a bunion. Mine were getting annoying so I bought EE width and one sizeup shoes. Didn't cure them but made them better. Cured them completely by giving up shoes in and around the house. I trip when I wear flip-flops or sandals so I just work on making callouses.

I will probably buy a better quality carport when this one dies. Might even buy some sides at the same time (neighbor behind me just put one of those up.

Bret, you are too kind. I marvel at everything you do and it makes me try new things and get better at the things I do.

I still have the Samsung flip phone and Galaxy S3 from my T-Mobile service they wouldn't work with TING. Service for our two cell phones (Liane's is an Alcatel Go Flip) is usually under $20 a month. It's actually worse than you imagine. My Palm Pilot TX is still plugged into the cradle on my desk. Works fine and has most of my contacts on it -- handy when the computer is off.

My music is all CDs (stored in a Sony 400-CD changer) converted to MP3 and loaded on 30GB iPods. All five of them are hard wired -- there's three in the cars, one on the audio system for the house and another in the shed attached to the Bose Wave. No Bluetooth or wifi required and no calls to answer.

I love the internet free medical advise. Yes they are bunions been getting them at various points on my body.
So I go to get fitted for skates. First thing the guy try's to sell me cheaper skates that he claims they are fitted better as a custom boot. Where CCM takes the current otter shell and puts in a custom liner to match foot.
I point out been skating on Super Tacks for close to 54 years which is what 2x your age? Then they decided I should be in the 7.5 shell, pointed out I want the 8 shell. That in order to get the 7.5 shell on my foot I have to take the laces out of the boot and then I can't get them back in the eyelet.
So we scan my feet four times they can't get the machine to work right. So now I am waiting for a call back. They are kicking it up the chain of command.

So in the process I figured out what the problem was, same thing that happened to my ski boots. My racing boots are 1k and about 500 in fitting at the time I bought them I got two liners. I would alternate between the two. After five years of use the liners went flat my feet were in agony. So I went and bought 4 NOS pairs of my original boots for 300$ in different boot flex numbers too. World Cup racing boots have different flex for different disciplines. When I skied in the new liners I thought I was back in heaven no pain. The current replacement liners 400$ don't fit the older style boot.
But now at my age I have enough boots and liners that I can finish my ski racing career with out buying new boots.

So I am sure with 700 hundred hours on the skates I have packed out the liners even when I put on the 7.5's I felt no pain. I am sure I could just buy the super tack size 8 and be fine. But I would like to try a custom skate.

I was able to compile some C code on the Pi and get it to work just not getting the electronic sensor to be found.
More snow tomorrow....

Michael, I hope you can get the foot thing under control. Pain down there can be very distracting.

We seem to have returned to normal South Florida weather with dropping to 70°F tonight. Two days ago one of my grandsons shared a video of his windshield wipers fighting to scrape off some heavy frost.

Started a little project in the shed. I'm replacing the 18-inch deep bench the termites ate. Home Depot was out of gold plated pressure treated 2x10s so I bought plain sterling silver lumber. Last bench was a bit wonky so this one is going together with biscuits and glue. Decided to space them six inches apart across the 94-inch boards.

..and this is what's wrong with retail these days. The people are poorly trained and they don't listen to what you say. To top it off, they are paid hourly, not on commission. While the millenials say commission is unfair, it certainly makes sure the salesman is motivated to make money, know his merchandise and learn how to read and listen to a customer for what they need/or want. The customer is better served, the business is probably more profitable, the good salesmen earn a decent living, and the bad salemen go dig ditches.

Except the most people would want to save 3 or 4 hundred dollars if they got the same thing, or think they were getting the same. You will see it a lot here people go for the cheapest option.
I think people would ***** if you didn't give them all the options. I think pure hockey does commissions to salesmen.
Microcenter pays on commission the salesmen 95% of the time don't have a clue, the other time I was teaching the tech salesman all about Raspberry Pi.
The other thing is I am not your regular type consumer ask the first boat salesman.
Since pure hockey does not seem interested, they have not called me back, going to look at other options.

Anyway the bunions are just one thing of many, over the years have had growths in various places on the feet. Written it off to a active lifestyle involving boots, there are so many other mechanical issues with the body I have lost count. They normally don't all hurt at once. A few years ago crashed heavily on shoulders several crashes while slalom racing, then my final run at ski championship involved me cartwheeling through several gates and landing in wrong shutdown corral.

Some things you learn in life and you pay for it too.
CCM Super Tacks, Atomic Skis and boots, Miller welders and Snap On tools.

Mark, there is some truth in what you say. Unfortunately many salespeople on commission will lie or try to pressure a customer into buying something they can't afford. I'm obviously biased in believing my grandfather was a great salesman but he lived right at the poverty line late in life. He worked for a marble company in Vermont and sold tombstones. I went out with him many times just to ride along (the ride home always involved fly fishing in a little stream). From the house and vehicle the client owned he could tell how well off they were and never sold an expensive stone to the poorest families. Those people are at their most vulnerable so a "good" salesman could easily make a fortune. I speak from the experience of arranging my brother's funeral when I was 19. The funeral parlor salesman tried to guilt me into a bronze coffin that cost more than a new car.

Michael, for someone making a living with those things it makes sense. My wife knows I want the cardboard box and pizza oven level of funeral with no viewing and no service.

It's 79°F and 92% outside so I really feel bad for the rest of the country. Florida isn't always a great place to live but today I'm going to count one blessing. Stay warm everyone and don't set yourself or your stuff on fire!

I have to agree with you for sure today Bob. we had over a foot of snow on Saturday and even though it's starting to warm up a bit and melt it's a MESS. it's a lot worse for the guys in the midwest who's temps are WAAAY below zero now.

I bet you won't ever see this again in your lifetime. we called it the THING cause it hung on my gutters for over 24 hours before it dropped harmlessly on our deck.

enjoy your day!!

Drives, the cold weather is all the way down into Mexico! From the animation on the weather map it looks like the cold is headed northeast and is predicted to miss us.

We have lived in South Florida for 45 years but you never forget those hanging snow drifts or icicles. Last time I had to deal with snow was in the mid-'90s but I was living in motels and didn't have to clear snow on anything but the rental car windshield.

It is frosty up here with snow or freezing rain every other day.
I still would prefer a change of temps even involving snow than live in a place that was flat and planned out in grid formation.
Plus I enjoy ridding in snow and ice.

Moving the wife's office from two locations to one. So the last week has been moving furniture dolly's loaded with stuff from one building to next. The pile was finished last night. Now I am building shelves and other furniture.

They don't pay me enough at the rink to call it a living, it is done so I have ice to exercise on. I enjoy teaching the kids and torturing the adults. I taught the adult clinic last week had fun chasing the guys about, no girls this week. But used a pair of 15 year old skates and they did not hurt my feet. Had to be the first time in a year they did not hurt. These skates used to grow a ball on the front of my ankle.

The current gameplan is to finish wife's office rest the remainder of the week and then next week start the captains course.

I don't know if I want the pizza box exit, thinking I rather just go out to sea.

Michael, my job chose Boca Raton. I tried to get a transfer to northern California in the early '70s but my boss blocked it. I got lucky and worked in the birthplace of the PC making it a fun 20 years. I learned as a child that you can choose to be stuck where you live. Most of the kids I graduated high school with still live on Long Island and rarely leave their neighborhood.

We have traveled a fair bit during the 45 years we've lived in Florida because it is pretty convenient. There are three nearby international airports. One is a half hour drive north (PBI), the second is a half hour drive south (FLL) and the third international airport (MIA) is another half hour south. Between vacations that involved flying we found super cheap cruises departing from the three ports in the same cities as the airports. Even thought about booking a cruise on a freighter but my ADD would trigger after the second month on the ship.

In our golden years, doctors and hospitals have risen higher on our priorities list. All but one of our doctors is within a mile of the house along with the medical facilities. Our primary care physician is five miles away but we wait no more than five minutes to see him. The older I get, the more valuable my time has gotten.

Much as we like nice things, we choose serviceable over signature. I prefer Milwaukee over Snap-on and Seikp over Rolex (my Rolex is a token from IBM).

Because we have a family cemetery I expect we'll poke a small hole in the ground for an urn next to a tombstone for the two of us. My wife's parents' ashes are just offshore in Boca Raton and we can clearly hear them arguing from our house.

I guess it's all what you're used to. I can't imagine not having the seasons. This is the first year in a long time where our winter resembles anything normal. When you get in a groove, it's actually easier to stay in it.

I fully understand the job choosing the location. That's exactly how I ended up here in St Pete. But for many reasons I decided to stay, mainly friends and activities, but my current (retirement) work is also a help. We have it all from my perspective. Culture, health care, boats, and most of the year, climate. And all within a couple of miles from my home. Of course Florida also has trouble makers like Craig and Shorty, but I can more or less control their influence.

all our parents are alive still (mine 88 and hers are 84) and we live right in the middle sort of (20 minutes from mine and 45 from hers) so moving now is a bit tough even though i'd really like to get a big shop and move out of the city.

there needs to be a few things once we do move like you mentioned. health facilities are a must since we are now both 65 even though we don't go to the doctors much we do know the value of a good one when we need one.

Trader joes (our main store for groceries)

AND GOOD NEIGHBORS would be a Big plus cause I hear of a lot of drama involved if you have some bad ones.

it's pouring rain at the moment so the foot of snow is going quick, but i do feel sorry for those living near the rivers now.

take care and keep up the good work at Bob's garage (and shed, ...)

I went a different route I chose where I wanted to work. Had originally taken NYC cop test and was headed there. Then one day in a business management class in 1978 a guy said to me ever work on a race car? Two weeks later I was at my first pro race in Quebec City it was all downhill from there. decided that policing with different levels of dispensing justice was not as much fun as racing where the laws of physics reign equally for everybody.
Then my aunt was traveling internationally for business and education at times gone for months I was watching house and running race shops in area.
In 84 was assistant track manager at Bridgehampton I lived at the track, got to drive the track any time of day. Did a drunk driving test one night with a friend. Had many rides in races cars with famous people.
I stayed at more motels than I can remember slept at many tracks from camping to RV.
I had a habit of getting a racing client in March when season ended take a mechanical job that you would learn from bring current set of skills and look to learn. Then when it got warm again find a race program.
I always had flexibility to do something interesting than sell my soul to a large corporation.
In high school went to referee's camp became certified worked ten games minimum of 25 a game that was 20 hours I made 250+ every week. My dad worked in a union told me it was the way to go with life. He worked 40 plus ten hours overtime and took home a little more than 200 a week. It was a sore point between us.

I have always had fun and been on the edge. We are racing in Detroit also in 84 running a Super-Vee in the support race for Formula One race. Staying in the Detroit Athletic Club getting back at Ten pm I was told the only place to eat was Greek Town. Got directions and walked there on the way back I was stopped by the police and asked if I knew where I was. So I told him what I was doing. He tells me this is a very dangerous area, I said I am from NY.
Next night I do the same thing, different cop pulls up and asks me if I am the crazy New Yorker?

Bob, isn't it grand to have this weather, and to read about the majority of the country freezing their butts-off? Of course, if the power is out, and there are hardships suffered, I sympathize with those people, having grown-up in the Snow Belt, but as a young adult, having made the decision to migrate to the S.E. coastal FL area. I like the access to the major airports, we've never used PBI, but choose between MIA and FLL (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale) depending upon fares, and we Uber to the airport. The last time I tried using a Yellow Cab, I waited over 40 minutes, I was in-danger of missing my flight, and I called another cab co, and never have used YC since.

One advantage of being in a higher-population area is access to good healthcare, and with my background in fire-rescue (EMS) I have lots of healthcare pros to-whom I can turn for advice. My wife, being Spanish-speaking, has surprised me with her acuity at accessing the healthcare system in a moment of need, though she was an electrical engineer by training/work. She always tells me, "I deal in facts," and her process-oriented way of thinking has helped us to be financially secure, and to be able to deal with health issues as we age (we are both retired).

I laughed at your remark about your in-laws "arguing loud-enough to be heard onshore as they swim the Gulfstream" to paraphrase, reading between the lines, I suspect it wasn't pleasant to be around them.

bj383ss's comment on a Samsung Galaxy S7 barely being of-use, well, I still have my venerable S7 edge as a daily-use phone, bought new. About a year and a half ago, I ordered a new screen, battery, headphone female plug, back, and camera and lens case cover. I replaced it all myself, and while I wouldn't want to try going swimming with it, I haven't had any issues functionally after the repairs. I dropped it and cracked the screen, despite it being in an OtterBox, and I'd noticed that the battery was not as-lasting as it had been, so I decided to spent the $ on the OEM parts, and tackle the work of replacing it. I assumed that if it "didn't take," I wasn't out a lot of $, and if it did restore its utility/functionality, I'd use it until it died or the network forced a change (5G?). I use it all the time to make shopping lists of things to-buy for projects, and taking a pic or two of something I need to buy, before I visit the Ace Hardware is common.

We have three houses for which I need to buy air handler and returns filters for, and opening the phone to see what sizes I need, while standing in the middle of the Home Depot wall of air filters is helpful in preventing purchasing mistakes. On occasion I'll buy a slightly-different size because they don't have the exact size I need. I cut it up to shorten/narrow it an inch, say, to make it fit. It's a good excuse to break-out the hot glue gun. I'm too-tacano (cheap) to buy those expensive $20 filters, and I try to replace 'em after the first of the month. The bills get-paid, the filter changes are made.

I recently spent a lot of time & effort clearing-out a house and I found a lot of things I'd lost-track of. One of those was my passport, which I'd renewed about a year ago. I also located a couple of interior trim parts for our S2000 which helped restore the good looks as I cruised up the I-95 express lanes to Hollywood yesterday. On the way back to Miami, in the afternoon before the evening rush hour, there was a totally-blocked express lanes accident, and it appears the accident was a bad one, as it made the evening news.

I am always amazed at the grand prix on the I-95 corridor in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. If you drive the speed limit, people pass you on both sides. Regardless of how-fast you think you're going, someone will always want to pass you. Often as-not, it is a lifted 4x4 or a $$$ SUV on thick gnarled rubber, being driven by a tailgating speeder who never seem to bother with turnsignals, apparently use of them is a sign of low testosterone. If I can, I pull to the right, but if you're in the I-95 express lanes in the 1-lane area, there is nowhere to pull-right. Those are the times I pray, as those drivers are more aggressive than a #45 supporter looking for Pence in the Capitol.

I've been to Detroit for the Grand Prix multiple times, back in the '80's/'90's, and my friend who's retired from GM at the Warren MI Tech Center and I would attend, and swap stories about the drivers we had heard.

Walking around parts of Detroit there are areas you don't want to-be. https://www.history.com/topics/1960s/1967-detroit-riots I was attending college in MI in the '60's, and I took a trip to Detroit with a friend from campus, and as we got close to his parents' apartment, he told me this was the area where the riots were, several years before, and that if I wasn't with him, it would be very-foolish for me to be there, alone. Apparently different demographics.

Did you have a tough time getting enough straight boards for the workbench top? Are you using white pine? In my experience, Southern yellow pine is straighter, and stays more-stable in-use. Are you using biscuits with the 2X side, or the 4X side flat? I'd assume the 4X side flat. Are you gonna cover the wood with a piece of metal? That makes for an easy clean-up.

Feel bad for the people who aren't used to the cold, and are getting slapped by it. For us older farts who grew up in and love the north, this is just a return to normal, a normal we've really missed. Good to see the fluffy white stuff. Now the southern folks like Texas, we all need to pray for them. Now you'll have to excuse me. I'm off to plow my +6" of dandruff.

Bob, the comment about your gulf stream inlaws made me snort so loud Laura thought I had fallen asleep and was snoring. When I read the whole thing to her she made a similar sound.

I always intended to leave NJ but never intended to move to Florida. Having lived here in north Florida for 3 years I couldn't be happier.

Mouse town is an hour and a half away and we can fly just about anywhere from there.
