1940s-ish Floor Jack Identification Help

Where are my automotive gurus at? I have been following a floor jack for sale about 3 hours from me and wanted to see if it is worth the drive and worth the $250 (I will try to negotiate when we can ID it).

Six hours of driving? If it were free, and you just got a new truck that you wanted to bond with, maybe.

If it were 10 minutes away? Maybe $75.

You guys are probably right, I still might send him an offer and see if he is willing to meet halfway. I may or may not have already fallen in love with those caster covers...

It's better to go get it, but sell it later because you changed your mind, than to pass on it, and regret that you didn't get it.

Yeah, but not at $250, because unless it's been fully restored and looks like a show piece, you'll have a hard time ever getting your money back out of it.

I’ve got the same jack. Might have been mine you saw in the vintage jack thread. Weaver is still in business. I called for info about mine and the serial number is from ‘37. They still offer parts for it. But, $250 seems steep, however, I picked mine up at the recycling yard so...

Both fair points, I'm willing to drive that far for it, but not for $250. Now if he is willing to reduce the price, I would go get it tomorrow. And I say that because I don't have the intention of ever selling it. I've been in the lookout for an Art Deco/streamline style floor jack since at least 2018 between Delaware and Florida. I haven't been able to find any within my budget, and have only ever seen a handful. And they disappeared quick...

As a matter of fact it was! As soon as I saw the ad, I knew it had to be a Weaver. I was already looking at their rebuilt kits (as my wife says, "putting my intentions into the universe", haha). So we will see, I messaged the seller and he left me on "read". I'm really hoping he gets back to me and we are able to come to an agreement. The jacks from that era are absolutely stunning.

Talk to the seller directly. You can better gauge his willingness to make a deal, and you will be better able to gauge whether he wants to get rid of it quickly or hold out for top dollar.

Seller thinks he's got gold - let him ebay it, you may end up getting it at the opening bid, which may be a whole lot less than $250. And I'd keep an eye on his ad - you may see the price dropping as reality sets in; the market for "vintage" floor jacks is almost non-existent, and mostly limited to a few of us here on GJ.

Ditto what Paul says. I've seen lots of sellers think they are sitting on a pile of gold, only to be disillusioned when reality sets in. I'd advise keeping up communicating with him. Ask him simple questions about the jack, not just "does it work", but things about the wheels, or grease built-up around the cylinder (symptom of leaks), etc. etc. Let him know you are interested, and love the jack, but you just don't have $250 right now. Maybe he'll realize it is so much better to sell something today to someone who really wants it than to go for top dollar and sit on it for months.

Thanks for the advice, fellas. I've been slow-burning him with questions about it. Turns out he has it for sale at his flea market booth. He has let me know it doesn't leak or have any grime build up, no corrosion or pitting, all of the wheels spin freely, but it is missing a "return spring". I'm going to get on the Weaver website and pull up a parts diagram and see what thats all about.

It sounds like your heart is set on it. Sometimes you just need to satisfy your soul and regardless of price and distance - go buy it. I'm guilty of doing it myself. I took a 2 day trip to buy a very cool little 7" AMMCO metal shaper because I wanted it. I don't use it much, but it is damn cool and fun to watch.

In the big scheme of life a few hundred bucks and a day trip is nothing. If you really want it and you know you'll regret not getting it - then go get it and satisfy your soul :D

Well, I went ahead and let him know I'll take it. It gives me an excuse to check out a new flea market, anyways. Maybe I'll find something else I "need" while I'm there. [emoji28] Plus I have some business with FWC I can take care of while I'm down there.

I am the proud new owner of a Weaver WA-72! I left the house at 9am and got back at 3:45. The jack is gorgeous and will clean up very well. I am absolutely thrilled to have this thing. But there are a couple of mechanical issues with it:

1- It leaks when you put a load on it. I will have to get a new seal kit for it, which I planned anyways.

2- The foot pedal does not have any spring tension or rebound, so it is just tied to the handle. But! The seller said the spring was missing, which it is not missing. It is right where it should be. So I'll order another spring for it.

Cosmetically, it is just dirty with a lot of the original green paint. I love how **fast** it looks. Okay, okay enough rambling... Here are the pics. I made sure to smear grease on my camera lens, just for you guys! Lol - well for an alternate view, this is a 1940s Walker bumper jack that I did restore.

Everytime you look at that jack now, you'll get a little burst of happiness. Plus it's one hell of a good jack, and you'll use it!

I absolutely agree, it will be made safe to use and subsequently used. I am so ready to get it cleaned up tomorrow to see what I'm really working with.
