Triangle Toolbox Dissatisfaction

After what I thought was careful consideration, I choose the Masterforce Triangle toolbox as the main location for my metric tool collection. Imagine my disappointment when I encounter interference between my deep sockets and the cover. There is no getting around this, I see no simple modifications. My only option is try to return it to Menards (without any packaging) and buy a ‘real’ triangle box. Has anyone had this experience? Or I can hold off and hope that HF offers one in the near future. Red area is where my sockets interfere with the cover and the green boxes are where deep sockets are show in their advertising.

41” Extreme works great for me. Easy to find and always know when I’ve lost another 10mm. Their logo is gaudy bling so that got pitched straight away.

Sticker shock when I saw the price of the 41” Extreme but I have to admit it’s 2x the storage of the Masterforce 26”. And I like the hidden compartment. Bottom line, I need something that holds a basic set of tools at least.

bend the pegs at an angle to allow more room. i have 4 montezuma boxes, the originals and have not had this issue. not saying it couldn't happen. it just hasn't been an issue for me.

No issues (except 3/4 drive sockets)with my Montezuma but I have the 41x18.
I'd put money on that Masterforce being a re-badged Montezuma, the latches look exactly the same as mine. Plus they used the same pictures off of the Montezuma site.

Great idea Farmer! Done that in a few situations myself from time to time. Should do the trick. Hopefully enough clearance.

Bending pegs is a smart idea, but might not work for some of us OCD types here. Would personally replace deeps with semi deeps as those are what I go for first. Of course it would then drive me crazy on where the deeps go.

How long are these deep sockets you have? I have the same 26" Masterforce box, and have had zero issues with deep sockets bumping the lid.

Montezuma makes the Masterforce boxes, no difference in depth, just width (and price).

Lid locks down and holds everything in place. Used a lot on farm and service trucks.

They're great for mobile storage like on the back of a truck or tractor that gets knocked around because they keep the tools where they're supposed to be. I've never seen the point of using them for stationary storage though.

sight inventory. in the blink of an eye you can see 90+% of the total tool count. ratchets, sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, anything on a tray or peg can be accounted for.

they are not for everyone but there are lot of benefits. i have 2 of the smaller ones and they will hold as much as a 26 inch wide chest. advantages being the weather proof lid, sight inventory. the ability to "hold" most of the tools in place when transporting and ease of moving. if you lift a loaded box from the angled side the handles are close to the forward edge and the center of weight is also there meaning is sits close to your waist and nearly straight down from your shoulders. try that with a loaded square chest.

one of the distributors still goes to farm shows and has one mounted on a rotisserie. lock the lid, completely flip it over, open the lid and if loaded properly most things will be exactly where you left them. more than one story of guys losing a locked box out of the back of a truck and finding them intact with all of the contents in place.

i suppose i just gave an answer for the question and then just moved into some of the other benefits. it seems that every so often questions come up about them as a lot of people know nothing about them. it seems like you do so no worries.

So far from this thread I learned that there are deep sockets and there are semi-deep sockets. My current set is 3” so I picked up a set of 2-1/2” and they fit perfectly.

Prior to this I removed the lower hinging tray. I used an assortment of plastic socket holders which rested on the base of the box, thus lowering every by 1”. That also worked, but finding the right combination of socket organizers to fit in the recess was driving my nuts.

Not to change the subject, but the topic did come up. Why a chopped off tool box? I’m using it as a stationary box, specifically for metric tools. I did add a small magnetic LED light, because it is kind of cavernous when used indoors. Most of my tools are in drawers, cupboards, bins, or lockers. Just trying something different is all.
