Jake, do all the sockets have the same symbol? Sometimes a set will have a couple sockets from an adjacent year.

I frequently have trouble with Snap ON date codes. The actual stamps sometimes look quite different from the cheat sheets.

Yes all but two have the same diamond stamp.
The two that are different also are weird.
they look similar to the 2019, but are closed at the top, making the letter e. :willy_nil

3jakes,
I don’t recognize that “brilliant-cut diamond / Superman shield” strike, but I think that “closed top letter e” looks like 2016, struck upside-down. Or maybe not, if it’s also mirror-reversed. Both the pics that show it are focused in a different plane.

A Craftsman Router bit set, a partial Craftsman socket set, and a piece of tool steel. $10

Be cautious using the router bits. Those don’t seem to have much of the limited feed feature, which reduces the size of the bite they can take. My dad had a set in a similar box, and they all ways wanted to launch wood compared to my Freud, Amanda, etc bits.

Yours look to at least have some protection, couple of his were like flat blades.

Here is a better focused of the what I believe you are correct reversed 2016.
The others will be named "Diamond Strike limited edition" :)

That's good to know. Most of what I do with a router is to cut slots or round edges, so I doubt I will be going so far as to use the full functioning of the bits, but info is good info.

Absolutely true--but in the case of the "e" it looks precisely as depicted in the decoder charts for 2019.

I would say it does apply for the Superman shield and would put that down as 2018--but why they would stray that far from a decade theme that is obviously circle-based is beyond me. Maybe the set-up tech couldn't find a compass and only had a straight edge...

No, the 2019 is open, not closed, like the 2016. But it looks like a “6” in the Terran Universe. Those sockets are obviously made from antimatter. Best to flip them now, 3jakes, before a rift develops.

I agree with dkroth that the Superman diamond is probably a weird alteration of 2018, though the angularity OR points out looks like it should be 2008. Htrae/Bizarro-World 2018, I guess.

So, those are artifacts of an interfranchise trade debacle...ViacomCBS v AT&TWarnerMedia. God save us if Disney gets involved.

RTM -can you explain this: "Those don’t seem to have much of the limited feed feature, which reduces the size of the bite they can take."

I've never heard of this concept, and I'm not getting anything on the internet/

OR - I defer to your version, but the one I was looking at is also shared on the interweb, and flows two decades across, so 2019 is near the center, not the edge...
Neither shows the diamond...

If I may editorialize on a pet peeve, both versions show typographically when Snap-on began contributing to the erroneous notion that a decade begins with a year ending in “0” - 1950. That is the first year the 0 anticipates the font style that follows it, rather than completing the style that precedes it.

Hit two estate sales and two Restores today, and I am very pleased with the results.

From the sales:

Only the fist was any good, and it was only so-so. But I did manage to find a Platt electronics tool set, with VACO, Xcelite and Craftsman included.
Also, a set of military Welch jewelers screwdrivers and a set of Craftsman Metric 3/8's, dirty as they are.

But today was one of the days that reminded me of why I hit the Restores, even though 9 out of 10 stops are fruitless:

A Craftsman L handle (circle H), Williams short speeder, unmarked turnscrew, and two WWII Xceltite nut drivers. $7 at the first Restore.

The second yielded:

a Starrett caliper, Snap-on angle wrench, Bonney Whitworth DOE, Utica socket spinner, Williams metric DOE, and an old socket box:

A '50s Challenger 1/2" box. A little beat up, but perfect in my eyes. All of that was $6, before a 25% discount. I love a day like that!

Not to drag this out ad nauseam, but I would submit that over time and successive generations of scans/copies of the decoder charts it is much more likely that data accuracy and clarity is lost and much less likely that any of the date codes would "grow" to become shapes not originally intended. Both 2009 and 2019 are examples of this and due to the fact that the "themes" in these decades use symbols that are exceedingly wide when compared to most others it is not surprising that the last symbol in these decades have become truncated.

BTW, I completely agree with your peeve.

Nice haul BMW! I have to agree with you on the restores. It's that one out of ten times when you get something that makes you have to put up with the other nine strike outs...

Also, a set of military Welch jewelers screwdrivers
How did you identify them as military? How are they marked? Is the box marked?

//// BREAK ////

For those who don't like to venture too far from home on this thread, here are some cleanup pics from Thursdays finds.

Maybe I am assuming too much, but with the FSN and that I bought them from the estate of a former navy commander, they just seem military to me.

Some manufacturers used the fed spec on the pack for marketing to sell more product. That packaging doesn't look retail in the least. Seems military to me.

Ive got an older version of the same jewelers drivers. Older spec. GGG-S121a and an older stock no. 41-S-1325. This one is more of a retail pack. But the Fed. stock number is stamped on.

I stopped at the Restore Friday and found a few interesting pieces.

Photo #1:
Herbrand Tappet DOE 1/2 x 9/16
Herbrand 1216 1/2" combo
Bonney 2806 Bonnalloy DBE shorty 1/2 x 9/16

A bunch of mixed sockets:

Photo #2 is an early SK 1/2 dr. 8-pt in 5/8
Photo #3 is an unknown 1/2 dr. 4-pt in 9/16
Photo #4 are three very similar 1/2 dr. 6-pt sockets, 5/8, 25/32, and 7/8
Photo #5 is the broaching on the 6-pt sockets
Photo #6 is the 9/16 4-pt from the 9/16 end
Photo #7 is the other three from the hex end

The 9/16 4-pt looks a lot like the last three, but is it close enough to be from the same maker?

Does anyone know who made these sockets? They seem pretty early, and from the wear, they probably are not alloy steel, as they are a little soft. The 9/16 is marked above the knurling, while the others are marked below the knurl. I cannot see any marks on them other than the size, except I do see a "T" peeking out of the punch-marked "B" owner's mark on the 25/32.

I've looked all over Alloy Artifacts and some old catalogs. Early Blackhawk is close, but they marked their sockets very well, and these are quite bare.

Definitely, Beemer. From the mid 50s. I wasn't challenging your conclusion, I was wondering how you made it. Thanks for showing the lid of the box.

Heh, I actually bought those thinking of you. I have a few sets already and don't really need anymore, but as you say, when you see something in the vintage, original packaging...

There are a few tutorials on fixing old cardboard boxes on Youtube, so I might take a swing at it, and I am pretty sure I have the needed driver to fill out the set.

Prov,
Indestro made a lot of unbranded stuff. Maybe Duro, but what’s the diff.
The size markings are larger that I’d expect for very early SO. NB would likely have a hyphen instead of a slash. SK would have a dot on either side.
Hinsdale...tend to be shorter, and yet...

This mark looks like part of an “M,” doesn’t it?

This Sunday 2019 was the last time my local car boot sale was open. Stay safe everyone.

That’s a sorrowful anniversary, LB.
And yet, along the lines of something Drives was saying on another thread, even at the best of times, we’re never far from someone’s misfortune. I’m heading out soon today, to pick up some free leftovers from a buddy’s parents’ house, that didn’t sell in the estate sale last weekend. I had my pick earlier, so this is just to be keep a few things out of the landfill a while longer. I don’t even know where I’ll keep it, or for how long.

BMW, I've has really good luck repairing old cardboard boxes and labels with Titebond wood glue for the "rigid" parts, for parts that need flex like "hinge" edges, I switch to Aleene's Tacky glue as it dries flexible to a degree.

PVA wood glues and derivatives like Elmers, dry hard and brittle. (I ran a series of tests on many different glues when I was looking for the best glue for speaker surrounds and cone repairs...)

It's been this here also. most Flea markets are a thing of the past right now...

Today there was NOTHING no GS/ES ads whatsoever...

I did win a Coleman 500 stove for a good price on Eprey last night...

I hit a surprise (for me) estate sale this weekend where a pretty crowded house and basement needed to be cleared out. The new owners take the property and all remaining contents tomorrow. The word hoarder was used, but it sure seemed like an organized hoard. The guy had way too many hobbies, model trains, guns/reloading, metal lathe, bowling, etc. You name it and he apparently did it well and passionatly! Anyway the prices were good and I went back 3 times.... $75 total... A Kennedy 620 toolbox in great shape, two Dunlap toolboxes in great shape, with trays, a neat Fulton toolbox with a double dose of 'patina;. A brass tumbler that I want to play around with for cleaning various things. A little table side vise, a leather handle that i will use on a toolbox. A couple random odds and ends in cool vintage packaging. An interesting Tiny Titan magnetic base with a worklight attachment. A ton of emery cloth 300 and above. A small sheet metal brake. A couple oak table leaves that I will use to have a new front made for the vintage Union machinist chest I got last week... and probably a dozen other small things in the tool boxes that I haven't gotten around to going through yet... wow! I have been off to a very slow start this year and this was a shot of adrenaline... oh.. also got my first vacinnation shot on Friday. Here's to moving forward.
