Hi, i stumbled onto this forum the other day and thought you guys might enjoy seeing my garage.

First a picture of the house. Its a bit unorthodox. Its a 50 by 60 steel building.

This very short video highlights the most unusual feature of the house and the Garage.

(probably want to turn off your speakers)

Interesting. ***** that you can't keep anything on the porch though. I know I'd forget something and open the door... cooler, beer, boots, etc.

WTF is up with the music? I had to turn my speakers off after about 8 seconds!

The music was an inside joke. Turning off the speakers is the appropriate response. Actually things stay on the porch just fine. They slide back against the wall and just ride up and down. Actually I have ridden it up to do some work on it.

Thats a great idea. When my MIL comes to visit she always sits on the front porch. This way I would just have to open the door and not have to entertain her for a while. Kids would be asking where grandma is?. Welcome to GJ.

Very unique and creative.

This wouldnt work for me though. Seems like Im constantly running in and out of the garage. Our door goes up and down constantly during a weekend.

You must have the higher-end liftmaster I imagine..........:)

LOL, I've been joking with my dad about how I should have just sold the house and put up a big steel building on a lot somewhere. I'd seriously do it, and this is a perfect example of how to make it homey, yet still functional. I love it

It looks a lot better with the windows. Great idea.
Seems like lifting the side of a steel building would be stressful on parts.

LOL, I love it! How do you open that thing?

My shop is next to the airport, and there are some big hangars near by with a whole wall that opens up like that...but nowhere near that cool. :)

Can you say Jehovah's Witness? (ok just a joke but cmon thats funny)

Video says it's on lake harney as in the one in Orlando
Yes thats the one.

It's hydraulic and I have a remote.

Thats pretty cool...how much does all that weigh?
I think we calculated about 10,000 lbs. The hydraulics are pretty beefy.

I was considering one of these airplane hangar doors. Howver, I cannot figure out how much space o they take up on the inside of the garage. How far away doe the door structure stick into the garage space?

Great set up BTW.

They don't take up any space inside except on the edges where the Hydraulic Rams connect. It is just about flush with the inside wall when closed.

And thanks all for showin it some love.

That is neat but not unusual. I lived by a "fly in" neighborhood in Richmond TX that required all hangars visible to the street to have similar facades. Mueller, the metal building people, were quite creative with their hangar door designs. Most were different, to a certain degree, but all were of the lift design shown by the OP. The one exception to the OP's is that no hangar could serve as a residence.......but it had to "appear" as if it was NOT a hangar. Go figure! :headscrat

Still a neat idea though.

Oddly enough neither of the two major door manufacturers Sweiss and Hyrdroswing, had ever done one so we thought the two we built were the only two. I would love to see a link to the community if you can find it.

Joe,
I know of no link but the community was in West Houston/Richmond area and was on Hwy 1093/Old Westheimer Rd. I'll try to get one of my old friends to take a few pics and I'll post them for you. I can't speak to any specifics concerning door or building manufacturers I just know the structures by the years of passing them on the road.

Cool. I have heard that they don't do well open in the wind though, and there is a huge amound of stored energy supporting a door that large. My local Menards has something similar in bi folds for their garden center. Cool, but I won't stand near them. These use a cable, and if that broke, I can't image it would be good. Or if a hydraulic cylinder blew out a hose. I'm kind of freaky about that kind of stuff. Yet 165 mph doesn't phase me. Go figure.

You're absolutely right about wind. Once the wind gets over 25mph we don't open it unless we are just going in and out. A big gust can put a huge amount of stress on the parts.

The concern about a broken cylinder is only that it becomes stuck in whatever position it broke in, power is required to put it up and down.

There is a new video that shows the completed project and the inside of the garage.

I also got around to some of the landscaping =)
