Being a 'professional homeowner' (name the YouTuber who uses this phrase), I strive to get the best coat of paint on my projects.

I follow the directions for:
Painting Conditions
Preparation
Priming
Painting: Shake can vigorously*
Dry & Recoat Times

* The one that I've wanted to make easier is: Shake can vigorously.

I decided to look for DIY plans to make a shaker. There are some very good ones, but I want to keep it simple.

Then I hit on a couple of YouTube videos that are just what I was looking for.

The $0 solution.
DIY Spray Paint Mixer

The one I decided to build, <$10.
EASIEST Spray Paint Can Shaker Stirrer BUILD drill powered

I'll be headed to the box store for some supplies, as soon as my next vaccine has become effective. It's too cold to paint, anyway. ;)

Not to pee on your parade....but I don't see that working well unless you constantly stop and start your drill.
I didn't watch the second video. In the first video he uses the sound of the ball inside when he stops the drill it to prove it works. Well yes, that's a short period of time when it will work. The ball is going to move relative to the paint when it first starts and again when it stops. At other times, it'll just just be pressed outward against the side of the can.

I think a recip saw attachment would be be much better and in fact I found one called the mix kwik on amazon for about $30. I also found a 3D printer version on thingiverse.

I agree, a recip saw is a "shaker" a drill is a "spinner". If using a spinner it will need to be started and stopped or at least the speed varied several times to get the agitator ball off the side and it probably should have the angle changed several times as well while spinning to get the ball to different parts of the can. I suggest if spinning that you pack the tube over the paint can with rags or towels to keep the can in the tube while holding it sideways and inverted to get a good mix. I'm not at all impressed by the tin can spinner since it's only good in the vertical position.

Just shake it by hand, it really builds up muscle. Just alternate hands so your body remains balanced. :D

I have been warming the spray paint can in a pan of hot water before shaking it. It seems to help the paint mix well and allow for smoother coats.

I use a heat gun to heat up the base of the can, shaking it after every 5 seconds to mix & move the paint. I can get a cold can up to 80° in two minutes with this method.

Oh and the alternate hand shaking & mixing is good exercise, like swinging an axe or a hammer every now & then.

If you use the PVC pipe or can for the tube, I use a ankle socks to set the can in. Works great

Why does every YouTube video comprise of 90% of the person yammering and 10% of the actual content?

Thank the youtube algorithim. If they want to get paid for their monetized video, there are significant benefits to stretching one out to either 10 minutes, or 20.

That is exactly why many videos take 15-20 minutes to address a topic that could be covered in exactly 90 seconds.

And don’t forget the clickbait title.

To the OP... WranglerStar is literally the worst offender regarding these two items that I’ve ever seen. He’s gotten a thumbs-down from me several times when “the reason this wood stove was made illegal!” title was slapped onto a video where he just built and painted it without adressing the headline topic. The man is un-damned-watchable.

I attached a can of hammered brown paint to a 12 inch sawmill blade with hose clamps.

I'm just outside of my barn with the sawzall- had the ol saw shaking the can - decided I needed a lil bit bit more speed.

Pulled the trigger more- can just a gettin it- ball making all kinds of noise !

Just a little more speed- Friggin BOOM !! Dam can exploded- brown paint all over the driveway, side of the barn and all over me !!!

I looked like Alfalfa from the Lil Rascals !!! Freckels of brown paint all over my face !!!

Wife was laughing her *** off !!!

I need a better setup !!!

I'm embarrassed to admit it but heck, I actually bought one a few years ago. I thought it would be like one of those as seen on TV gimmicks but I had to have one. Pretty sure I was drinking that day, I've quit drinking since then.

Anyways, it actually works pretty well. I use it for cans that have been sitting around for a very long time. Mixes them up really quick. I also use it for Rustoleum black, I tend to have problems mixing those well by hand. Also had a project where I went through quite a few cans, got tired of shaking by hand & this thing saved the day.

I absolutely can't stand that guy! There are others who I can't watch & I'll just simply won't watch. But there are 3 people on YT that annoy me so much, I block their videos just cause I can't even stand looking at their video thumbnails. Wanglerstar is one of them!

Long Sawsall blade and a hose clamp and 30 seconds of run time will shake up any rattle can to perfection.

I use it on quart cans too - works perfect. Probably would work on a gallon can if you had a big enough hose clamp

Scotty Kilmer will give him a good run for his money. Years ago he had decent videos but within the last couple of years he's nothing but click bait. Absolutely unwatchable.

Apparently the spinning ones work well according to the reviews on Amazon.
I made one with 3" PVC for drill and it works in vertical and horizontal and no issues. I place can in a ankle short sock and it holds it fine.
I spin continously and no stop and start. Mixing is fine even on old spray paint.
I used old can hand shaking and spray was terrible. I inserted in the PVC spinner and sprayed like fresh paint.

This got me thinking I want something I can just put in the lathe and turn it on and walk away for a few minutes. Maybe deliberately bend the spindle of the tool slightly so it spins an ellipse? And spin slow enough to reduce centrifugal force on the can and ball so things move in there?

edit: or maybe round with baffles so the can climbs to a point then falls?

Now I wish I had a shaper!

I used a sawzall blade wrapped with duct tape and a couple hose clamps for a couple years. I replaced that approach with a Mixkwik probably 10 years ago. The Mixkwik is worth every penny. It will mix an aerosol can of paint to usable even if it has been sitting on the shelf for years.

$130! That's crazy

Find a new pneumatic shaker for less.
I want to say that I got mine for $70 with coupon.

I've had it for about 10 years, and only recently had to replace the hose inside that broke. They're notorious for needing a lot of oil in order to not break down, but by the time I got mine, an inline oiler was included. I think that oil is what led to the vinyl hose eventually going brittle.

I also made on from a sawzall blade, but instead of hose clamps I used some old cam lock tie-down straps. NO TOOLS
