Vise, does me good to know that the 8'' and 8+'' units can still be found.---Very good hunting there Sir.---If it were a deer, it would be a Boon and Crocket 200+''.
Here’s something I picked up last week: a Prentiss 98.
Awesome Vise! Congrats!
Any ideas on who made my Peerless? Was Fulton a vise manufacturer?

Uh, the 4" looks like a baby up there!![]()
That is indeed dramatic... but not quite as dramatic as the 2 Prentiss vises posted by trijeff

Vono: This is the only information I have on Fortis vices that look like yours. It came from a 1935 Buck & Hickman catalogue. I have to say it sounds like it is very stout and well made. Similar models showed up in B&H as late as 1964 but they looked very similar to Record. See above. Nice find.
Shiftless, that is actually what I had been considering. I will look into getting a section of rail road. Thanks for the information and response. I like the Reed as well.
11b,
Where in GA do you live? I work at a rail mill in PA, and visit Roswell
several times a year. I could bring a 2 to 3 ft section of 136 or 175CR
down with. Would have to pick it up in Roswell though.
That’s very generous of you.
If you could cut those down into a length that would fit into a flat rate box and weigh under 70 pounds, I bet a few of the GJ guys would buy them.
Would that be cool with the “boss”?

The Law of Unintended Consequences comes into play here.
If people actually max out their flat rate shipments at 70 pounds, the USPS will soon treble the price or reduce the max weight!! I'm sure his local PO would complain after the first five shipments! And let's not forget the propensity for postal workers to shoot first and ask questions later...![]()
Here are a couple of pics of my latest project. Prentiss 524 with the early style swivel base. I was fortunate enough to get the often lost Prentiss marked captive wrench. The swivel was rusted tight when I got it. It works fine now. More pics over on the vise repair thread.
I’ll include 2 “before” pics taken after it got of the “hot tub” and before it got pressure washed. I removed 4 layers of paint. The top layer was probably latex house paint.
.
Nice job Shift, the jaws look to be in decent shape too.
Nice discovery Bighead !
What else might be back there?
If you don’t need a vise as big as a 600S Wilton, there are more than a few of us who might help haul it away.
