Eisner did a graphic tech manual for the M16 too. Its a great marriage of comic book and tech manual.I've got a copy from my earliest picking days.
No problem, Jim. I figured it was mainly a rhetorical question anyway with your parenthetical phrase included. Have you ever seen photos of Mauldin during the war? He looked like he was 13. 125 lbs sopping wet.

And I will use this opportunity to put in a plug for Will Eisner, who is more "on brand," as they say, for this site. Eisner was the illustrator for Army Motors, as a warrant officer. This was a magazine that the Ordnance Department published, like a newsletter for mechanics, intended to keep them aware of maintenance policies and procedures and new tools etc, but it was immensely popular for the cartoons, especially the character Joe Dope. Like a Sad Sack or Beetle Bailey, but he was a mechanic. Eisner drew "The Spirit" for Marvel before the war and after the war and late in his career, in the 70's, is credited with the first graphic novel. But he continued working for the Army, illustrating PS, The Preventive Maintenance Monthly, well into the Vietnam War. Google him. He did some hilarious covers.

[emoji106] I'm glad you did. It was lonely having the only one! (And thanks for the compliment.)

Thursday, making my normal rounds I ended up at an overpriced estate sale, were I picked up an old toolbox full of junk for $17

But it was because of a few specific items that I was willing to pay the toll:

A small but very well kept hex set, and the biggest double ended adjustable wrench I have every come across - 10"/12"!

Also, the handle of the box was appealing as a donor for another restoration.

After that, I swung by the Restore, picking up the following:

Proto driver, Bridgeport ph1, Mossberg socket, and 10 acid brushes. $2.25

Today, I went out and hit a few sales to the south of me.
First two were duds, tools were overpriced or uninteresting, but I did pick up a book at the second stop. Swung by my favorite used tool shop, and while he had a huge stock of Snap-on, I left without purchasing anything. But the next stop turned the day around.

Complete SK set, brake pads, Camillus knife (no idea what it is for), SK tommy bar, a magazine, and a black box full of screws:

All of that for $8.50

The next stop had a nice shop, but I think the good stuff went the day before.

An empty, unmarked socket box and a box of .308 bullets. $1

next stop was a wash, but I spotted a TOO on the way, so I circled back. And I was glad I did!

Stanley sweetheart level 237 level, Indestro socket, Starrett protractor head, and a set of Dunlap wrenches:

$8 for all of that.

Oh, the magazine and book:

a biography of the Russians who were in control of Alaska before the purchase, and a 1928 Better Homes and Gardens.

One Russian in Alaska was an experimenter. He lined up a group of Aleut men, one behind another, and shot a musket through them, killing a number of them. He was trying to determine how many he could kill with one ball.

Just one example of the way they treated the natives.

The nice Reed vise I was hoping to grab at this morning’s sale was sold before the sale started. I got there half an hour early too. This is not the first or last time this will happen. :(

As a bit of a consolation prize, I was able to grab a few goodies and only spent $15.00

A couple of drill index boxes more than half full of new drill bits, a couple of open drill bit organizers from Great Lakes Pressed Steel of Buffalo NY...the little one is about half full of number drills. #1-60
The bigger one had only a couple of bits but the other holes were full of the usual rusty hex wrenches and small sized taps.
Yeah, I did do a couple of minutes cleaning on 3 out of the 4 before shooting the pics.

The heavy metal box with a hasp was full of China bristle house painting brushes. High quality and clean. Under all of the brushes were 3 medals with ribbons. Two bronze WW2 related were in this white box. The silver colored swimmer medal is unmarked. I really doubt that it’s Olympic.
Before I even got home, the military metal box went to Don. The sale was only a couple of blocks from his house. Don generously gave me 2 little clamp on vises he scored in that big harvest from last Wednesday.

Do any of you guys know somebody who collects this variety of war medal?

I found it on FB MP but I paid for and picked it up out of the guy's garage so it was technically a garage sale

Not my photos, but got this old-school 1HP Black & Decker 10" Pedestal Grinder with matching stand for $150. The stand is not cast. It's actually quite thick sheet metal. It's not obvious from the front, but the back is open. It's still pretty heavy though. Also, the grinder has a dust collection port on the back - not visible in the pictures.

Edit: I should add that I'm a bit confused as the grinder is currently wired for 220V but it is only listed on the motor tag as being 115V, not 110/220 or 115/230. I know there are ways to get around this but seems like a really odd thing to have done. May have more pics to come as I try to decipher the wiring and get it back to 110V for convenience' sake. Grinder is still in my trunk at the moment...

Quiet weekend around here, but there was one nearby, an estate sale, running 1 to 6pm. Got distracted by a neighbor and her dogs, so got there at 1:15. Headed straight into the garage, as I saw a few tool boxes in piles around the perimeter and one in the center. First box was a disaster, the bottom section looked like it had been full of water for months, pipe and monkey wrenches rusted solid. Lots of other plumber type stuff in other piles. Was about to give up, headed into the back room, there was a brace sticking out of a plastic tote. Caught my eye, so I wandered over.

In the tote was a plastic tool carry tray, with the brace was a couple of razor knives, one broken, and a couple of sockets. First I picked up was a Blackhawk, then another. Pulled the tool tray out, and started tossing back the cruft. After a few items left, I found a Plomb Tools Los Angeles miniature tool box, which energized me a bit. Of course, the box was empty. So I started looking for the tools. There was a Craftsman two drawer carry box near the big door, with a bunch of mis matched sockets and wrenches.

I went through that box as best I could, grabbing some sockets and throwing them in my tool tray, opening the drawers revealed a bunch of rusty wrenches. Was going ok til they closed the big door, and the overhead light was way at the front of the garage. My flashlight was having trouble keeping up, as it hasn’t been used much for the last year. I finally gave up when some guy started hovering a bit closer than I was comfortable with, so I moved on. (Guy quoted him $30 for the box, he countered w $5).

I checked out as quick as I could, went back to the dogs waiting patiently in the car, stopped for BBQ on the way home, and then spread my goodies out on the tailgate.

IMG_20210313_153739-X3.jpg

Left to right, some Stanley goodies, some Craftsman goodies, including long C sockets, misc sockets, Proto Plomb stuff below the box, the Blackhawk & Snap-on stuff, some SK in various flavors, and other goodies. After a quick inventory, I realized I got no where near a complete set of anything.

So, I decided to go back, see if the box was still there, maybe there missing sockets were there. Since it was just on the other side of the block, I grabbed a bag and a better flashlight, and walked back.

The box was still sitting where the cheapskate left it, and this time I had the garage to myself. Poked through the sockets again, looking at Every One. Went through the drawers again, grabbed out a set of large Thorsen wrenches, only the bottom half rusty on these. Went through other stuff, grabbing some Lenox Forstner style bits, a few files, a Petersen Vise Grip with the big square jaws, a slide hammer puller, and a vintage dumb battery charger to be repurposed into my e zap tank, which I may need soon. More Craftsman socket stuff is the big pile near the battery charger

I will be adding to a few of the brand specific threads with some better pics of the details.

The Stanley pile included an early #18 adjustable mount block plane, a #75 wooden scraper, a 723-10 brace, a 130a Yankee ratchet screwdriver, which was quite stiff, a quick WD 40 blast and a wipe, followed up w bike lube, good as any other I have now.

GForceJunky, I found a B&D #83 grinder last July. It also is listed as 115 volts, but like yours, it shows the amps as 14.6/13. This is 50/60 cycle ratings. A modern single phase, 60 cycle, 1 HP motor draws 16 amps. Either the B&D is VERY efficient, or it isn't a full 1 HP. A 3/4 HP modern motor draws 13 amps at 60 cycles.

That said, my grinder is very powerful. Probably much more powerful than a modern 3/4 HP grinder with the same amp rating. Mine is extremely smooth and quiet. It didn't come with the spark guards and tool rests like yours, but I got 5 new wheels!

I'd be very interested in photos of your tool rests and guards. I can guess about the spark guards, but dimensions on the tool rests would be a great help.

PS: Search archive.org for the 1953 and 1959 B&D catalogs. This grinder is shown in both.

Sorted through an earlier estate sale haul and found these in the mix of stuff I stuffed into the LL Bean sack I use while "shopping" at sales. (Appropriately, the sacks were picked up at various sales in the past after learning that my hands cannot hold nearly as much as my eyes.)
Nothing too exciting but these were brands that I was unfamiliar with until some quick internet learning. The Lion brand wrench seems a bit uncommon, at least on this side of the pond, while the Compton & Knowles are likely related to the textile industry.

Also grabbed this hand drill which seems more decorative than industrial. I haven't researched this yet and don't see any obvious manufacturer markings. Anyone familiar?

Yesterday mid morning I decided to hit up a "Mechanic and Gardener" garage/estate sale that looked promising. They were definitely pushing to clear things out and I ended up buying way more than I should have.

Arrived and starting scanning the tables of tools and after about 5 minutes looked up to see that there was a 73 Plymouth Roadrunner in the building (we have a few of these cars in our family) and just as I was done shopping for tools I was invited into another attached garage where I found a stash of spare parts from the restoration of that car.

That spiraled into me digging out car parts for the next hour and a half which I have to go back and pickup today. Doors, Trim, ETc.

Below is yesterday's tool finds.

Gas Hedge trimmer $3
Lawn Roller $10 -Filled with water and couldn't remove the plug so we rolled it up an extension ladder into my truck.
Craftsman 92 pc Socket Set (date code EE,USA) $20 Case is broken at the hinge unfortunately.
Palmera Truecraft wrench set $15
Williams S-52 ratchet $2
Proto 5449 ratchet $2
Snap on 8" 3/8" extension $1
12" Crescent $3
18" Proto Pipe wrench $4
Snap ON wwp-11 $2
Homemade Brass hammer $1
Misc Craftsman wrenches I needed to complete a set.
Several sets of Craftsman Ignition wrenches.

This looks like a Whitney hand drill, one of the most desirable small drills. Google it and you should find lots of info. If I found one in that good of condition I would be thrilled.

WTN - When I first saw the hand drill I was thinking it was missing some wood scales for the grip seeing the pics in the link Mike posted, maybe not.

That has to be the smallest chuck I've seen on a potato masher drill! certainly for watch adn jewelry making!

GFJ, Nice score on the B&D grinder!

Definitely a usable tool, not sure who made it yet, but it looks like family to this one. Prized for their small size

Argh, guess I should have read the rest of the comments before replying. Whitney is even rarer.

(Egg beater is the common term ,not potato masher)

You didn't mention the little auto kit type wrenches on the far right hand side of your lift gate. As you know, I am a sucker for those and have a sizable collection, even if they're unmarked, such as the little 3-pc kit from my haul on Friday (see Pic 1). For those who don't follow hauls from here to additional photos and information on their relevant Vintage Board brand or type threads, some of the other tools from the same haul in Pics 2 through 7.

Nice find! Remember me saying in the middle of my lamentable Thursday trip story how I saw a strange extra deep coping saw with decorative painting on the frame inside the fiberboard box the guy wanted me to buy? THAT IS THE SAME PAINTING! Did Whitney make coping saws? Don't answer that, WisJim. I don't want to know. I told you guys I was off my game! Dammit.

PL: Yes, I know that feeling. Especially now, as I left another egg beater type behind (probably a Millers Falls based on google images search, bits were probably there too, duh). I will have to read up on them as I seem to see the egg beater type somewhat regularly. Live and learn. Thanks ALL for the info and links.

Thank you. Could not think of the name to save my ****. I think they are mismatched, as one has a really unique head angle compared to the rest.

Things FINALLY opened up a crack here, adn I went to my first real yard sale since NOVEMBER today, as well as a brand new Flea here in town! open Sat/Sun for the next couple of weeks (at least)

Masks were required and people were generally behaving. I'm still being super cautious but I can't wait for my shot to feel like I'm not just a sitting duck...

Mind telling us where this new flea might be, for those who might be within driving distance of The Badlands? And desperately need a Little more action, even if it’s only “considered” action, like “maybe we could go....” til I get my shots.

More cast iron smalls !
Seller claims the enamel covered skillet / ashtray is a Wagner Sidney -O-.
The little kettle is definitely a Wagner and the spider pot is from Mammoth Onyx Cave KT.
Also snagged a Hamilton walnut / pecan cracker and Dietx No.888 RR Light.

I didnt know what the Hamilton was when I bought it. But it was a clamp on so I grabbed it.

Nice grab on the doe adjustable! I know you are on cloud 9 for that leather tool box handle ! I would be most excited about that craftsman deep socket and vanadium punch :) but the leather handle is also really nice!

BMW nice find on the wrench. We can see why you went for the box of goodies.

RTM I like how you mentioned the Plomb box energized you!

Lugz I like the Truth L handle. You know I’m a sucker for drive tools.

WTN- interesting drill for sure.

Had a fun filled flea market day today, hitting up two fleas. I went a little overboard, but that’s nothing new.

Starting with a couple items of interest:

a heavy little cast iron name plate. Thought it was a gag gift until the seller told me the story behind it. It came off an old piano! He found the piano rotting away in the woods, and all that remained intact was the plate. It has some hot glue on the back, where he had it hanging on his cabin wall. Couldn’t leave it on the table at the price of $1. I’m a piano player but had never heard of the company.

Second item was an early morning find mixed in with boxes of hand tools. Pickle bucket opener? New one to me.

This tray of misc tools the seller was asking 50 cents each. I saw a number of Canadian tools and it had my interest. The seller offered me the lot for $5. Sold. Made in Canada Proto, Snap On,Gray, Herbrand, ETF wrench and even one socket (possibly Wright made) which I’ve never run into before. Some USA Penens, Mckaig Hatch pliers, Vlchek pliers. Williams, Lectrolite and Craftsman wrenches, etc.

RTM, thanks for the info on the knife. Now I can get some information on it.

Suburbguy, it is marked Lakeside, I think. I am still dealing with the rust on it.

Dodge, $10 for all of that, including the electrical fish tape? Either way, You ****! BTW, what's the red thing with the wheel under the crate in the first pic (and was that also part of the haul)?

3Bay, You **** for $5 for all of that stuff from Canada! Pickle bucket opener: Yes, ask anyone who's worked in the kitchen at McDonald's. They're used to open 5-gallon buckets.

Google Lens found this:

Chenry, when you mentioned the Roadrunner, I was expecting you to say that you'd bought it too!

Mike

The thought crossed my mind but it was already sold and for way more than I would have thought. I settled for some nice interior and door panel trim pieces, 2 fairly rust free doors with glass and some other small parts. Overall a good day pickin.

That is longer than the standard S-52. They must not have changed the number yet. It is the earlier style retainer for the mechanism.

Is that a brake shoe/drum gauge on the edge near the ratchets?
