What is special about Craftsman EE series sockets?

I have a 1/4 drive 13 MM socket. There is no dent on the drive side to grab the anvil of the socket wrench.

Is it because EE series is special, or I just got one with a manufacturing defect? Thanks!

The 1/4" EE didn't have detents. The 3/8" EE does though.

This was not uncommon back then. But I do have recent examples from several brands that omitted the detents by mistake on a single when the rest of the set had them.

If my memory is still working, Stanley got into trouble in the 1980's because they started to produce the EE series in Taiwan and everyone complained and they stopped; (I also believe the Govt. got after Stanley).

I have a set of EE that's mixed USA and Taiwan. It previously belonged to a family member. Most have USA stamped on them. I can't recall which parts were Taiwan... it was just a few parts... maybe the extensions. What was surprising to me is that the spot in the case for each Taiwan part is marked "Taiwan" in addition to the description or size. The spots in the case for the USA parts just have a description or size.

I had a set of Stanley 1/4" and they did not have the detents. They were painted black, were extra thicc and now they weigh down my box of forgotten tools.

A while back I inherited a Craftsman 90-ish pc. socket set in a blow molded box. 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 dr., I suspect 90's vintage
ALL of the sockets are -EE- and marked Made in USA, the ratchets are the round head, non quick release with thumb wheel and tri-wing change switch. NO C.O.O. on these so I assume "offshore".
The 1/4" sockets do not have a retention detent, the others do. I put a 1/4 x 13mm socket on the ratchet and cannot shake it off, so little concern about that.
That same -EE- 13mm socket measures .692" O.D. , a 13mm -VV- measures LARGER at .704, my Wright is .696
For additional context from that same -EE- set the 3/8 dr. 3/4" socket is 1.014 vs. my -G- which is .993 and a Snappy which is .989.
Metric 3/8 dr. 19mm -EE- is 1.124, a -G- is 1.001 and my Koken is 1.009
I no longer have the 1/2" sockets so am unable to compare but don't remember them being any bulkier than any of my other sockets.
Given the above I think any reputation for them being bulky (at perhaps 12 thou bigger) is unwarranted, at least these USA made ones.
The -EE- in my possession, while I haven't used them appear every bit as well made as any other Craftsman socket I've seen and certainly have much nicer plating than the -G- stuff in my travel tools.
That is all.
