School me on being transitional, it is an earlier one correct? With the round meatball.

It’s got the round meatball but it looks to me like there is the much desired split nut adjuster in front. I bet it also has an adjusting screw in back of the nut to compensate for wear.

The later ones had those features and a flatter nose.

I too admire that color. Is it Italian olive?

St Pat's day.

Here's the rusty (see back a couple pages) big Blair "Double Power, Allsteel" on its stand with a lick of green paint

no, not that green they dye the Chicago River, but close to the original Blair - can't name the shade as I mix from left over oil-based paint and hand brush - I'll never have the finish of some of your indoor masterpieces, but I try to keep it neat. The loose soft jaws are English 'standard issue' fiber jaws by Python or Record - useful. The cover is made from a piece of truck tarp and given a quick wipe of dilute paint.

ps - that's not rust showing through -- I keep an oily rag or 2 under the tarp - shoulda wiped it off before photo

Enjoy St Pat's day - mine's a draft Guinness in a straight glass not too cold.

"A pint of porter's your man"

Thank you, this is my first old vice, yes it has a split nut, don't remember on the adjuster.
Approximate year, mid to late 40's?
Color is satin Italian olive, Krylon cover max #9167

Fierljeppen, thank you for the information and complement. This explains many of the questions I had about this vise.

I just picked up this green C3. It came with the swivel base (not pictured). No date on the key way, but I’m guessing 70s due to the poor fitting ****. I don’t usually pick up Wilton’s, but the price was right on this one. Happy St. Patty’s Day!

Nice pick up Vise. I really like those old C3’s, they’re so top heavy a stiff wind will blow it over

I’ll need a better backpack for that trip. I think I tested it once, it only took five cranks open before the vise fell forward.

This is in my buddy's shop and hes selling out in 9 months. Trying to get it from him before he is out of there. Im working there in between my own jobs to help him wrap up and make as much dough as he can before the new owners take over 760b1dbd4821ddaa1ea922ffcedac5bd.jpg

Well, it can't get too much use jammed up next to that big air compressor!
Haha! I gotta ship that air end out for reman. That compressor is on a cart.

He actually has 3 more wiltons about the same size but a lot newer.

Can someone tell me who made this vise? It looks like a Wilton bullet vise but it appears to be a copy. The lettering on the side starts with a "T" and looks like it ends with "Master".
Anyone have background on the quality? Thanks!

Update: Assuming it might say "TaskMaster" I googled that and it turned up an India made bullet clone. So I think I know what this is. Was trying to determine if it was worth going to check out. Probably not.

Tex:
I have one. It’s a clone of a Wilton cadet. The front horseshoe retainer is marked made in India but it’s a good quality vise. If you don’t see the made in India mark it might be on the back side.
For like maybe $50 it would make a great user for somebody. It’s pretty rare so whether or not you consider it a collectible is up to you.

It’s a way better vise than the ones you get in box stores or HF.

I have two bullet 9450's with the stuckest lock downs I've ever encountered. Made zero progress with the propane torch.

What would be the cleanest and easiest to remove sealer to put around the base with it flipped upside down to make a reservoir for evaporust?

Wouldn’t it be easier to get a plastic tray or bin that the base or whole vise would fit into and fill it 2 inches deep with Evaporust?

You could make a custom tray using scrap lumber and line it with 6 mil plastic film or a big baggie or a piece of that blue tarp that has a hole in it that you were saving for something...:)

You could also put the whole vise in a big HD baggie, pour in a gallon of Evaporust, and then immerse the bag in a big bucket of warm water. The water would support the sides of the bag letting you form around the vise before you seal the bag with the zipper.

I say warm because Evaporust doesn’t work very well at all below 60*F.

Maybe electrolysis would be better???

HD baggie?

I had it sitting in that bin but 1 gallon wouldn't get close to high enough. I'm being cheap and didtwant to buy another gallon. Cheapness is an illness sometimes.

HD = heavy duty

One trick I’ve used to get the level high enough is to put extra stuff in the unused bottom surface area of the bin. Quart paint cans, anything solid and heavier than the equivalent volume of Evaporust. You could use clean gravel if you had to. Sandwich bags full of sand. Whatever you put in will displace liquid and bring up the level in your bin.

I'm not even sure evaporust will work. I never viewed it as a great penetration.

I may have to grind the bolt heads off. Maybe then I can get the rest out of the factory lockdowns.

Evaporust actually ain't bad given time.

I'd vote a bead of RTV, but the rust may prevent a decent seal. Do have it in a catch can for this... and cover with Saran wrap to prevent evaporation.

Well, I have extensive experience with evaporust and based on a recommendation from Frank Lee, I transitioned to citric acid.

In fact both of the two vises I picked up last weekend got dissassembed, soaked in simple green for 24 hours, rinsed then soaked in citric acid for 48 hours. I am completely sold on the citric acid.

Way cheaper and IMHO just as effective. A 5 lbs bag from amazon cost 14.99
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EYFKNL8/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I filled a plastic bin with 10 gallons of cold water, added 1 and 1/2 shot glasses of the citric acid per gallon (so 15 shots), stirred the water until the powder was dissolved then added the parts.

Have the bin outside in the shade or place a loose cover over the bin otherwise the house will smell like rotten eggs in a day or more but the stuff works great.

I was trying to get the set screws in the Columbian 203 1/2 that hold the pipe jaws out. One was stuck and very rusted, heat had no affect, and I bent two allen wrenches. After the 48 hour citric acid soak, I was able to get it out undamaged.

I really wish i had known about the citric acid before I rebuilt my first 100 series DP. that thing was a rust magnet and I went through 12 gallons of vinegar getting it soaked and disassembled.

I cleaned up this little clamp on that friend and fellow GJ member D42jeep gave me out of the pile of tools he recently scored from a garage clean out rescuing them right before they were doomed to the dumpster.

What do you guys think? One side is marked with a B on one part and a C on another.

The other side has 25 in a rather vintage looking font.

Maybe Brink and Cotton?

The jaws are about 1 inch wide.

(No beer can for scale but I have the thumb screw mount clamped in a Wilton C1)

1982fxr--What did you try on the bolts besides heat? I've always had good results with Liquid Wrench and PB Blaster.

Heat, penetrating oil, rappibg it with a hammer. Vise grips.

I'm just gonna grind the heads off. Hopefully I can remove the rest of the bolts once its off.

Patience Grasshopper. Rome wasn't burned in a day! You can always grind the heads off if non-destructive methods don't work, but they need time.

11b,

Where in GA do you live? I work at a rail mill in PA, and visit Roswell
several times a year. I could bring a 2 to 3 ft section of 136 or 175CR
down with. Would have to pick it up in Roswell though.

Wow! PSCO1867, I live in Snellville and work in Tucker. I am about 30 minutes from Roswell and would very much like to meet up and receive the offered RR track. I have been wondering all day where to get some from. I will PM you. Thank you for the kind offer.

So, there are several GJ members in the ATL area and many others that travel through GA. Just spit balling here but if PSCO1867 want to drop a few pieces with me, I am glad to help push them out locally to member here or anyone passing through. Anyway, just a thought.

I am actually in Roswell, so I could help store/hold for a couple people also. Would definitely be interested in buying something from PSCO1867 the next time he is down here.

Someone local-ish to me is selling a Columbian 107 in what appears to be pretty darn good shape (jaws look great and it all seems straight and unmolested) for a whopping $1900. I know it's a big boy - 7" jaws and ~200+ lbs - but what is an actual reasonable price to expect to pay for something like this?

I'll be in Roswell before May. I'll bring four 12" pieces down (maybe more), and will discuss with you two GA guys beforehand.

Regarding flat-rate shipping, I'm going to experiment with coroplast wrapping (of piece), and coroplast void-filling of 12" X 12" X 5 1/2" interior space of box.

A slightly smaller section, cut to 11 1/2" long looks more suitable to the flat-rate box.

Stay tuned

Picked up this little Parker bear.

Zoomie (or others) - any ideas how these bears got distributed? Were they promotional giveaways? Bought from catalogs?

C'mon; where the hell do you come up with something like this. I'll bet if we put a $1000 bounty on one that nobody could come up with one that they didn't already have.

The new C2 is finally clean and almost ready for paint. Still need to wire and sand the dynamic jaw and base but that’s it. I know a lot of you are on the BLO however, I’m going to paint this one.

Question is: what looks good on a C series? I know everyone has there personal preferences and that’s what I’m asking for. Do you mind sharing some current pics??
Thanks everyone! Cheers! IMG_4079.jpgIMG_4137.jpgIMG_4138.jpgIMG_4139.jpg
