Not sure why, but I got a thing for collecting old decimal equivalent charts. Here are a few of them. I'm looking for some of the Timken ones

A Miami FL one. My friend ran a welding shop for 40 years, this was one of the charts in the shop. Just-after the use of zip codes began, and a 'named' telephone exchange. It's now in my garage, above the workbench.

I picked this one up today. Here is a little bit about Ducommun metal supply

"California's oldest company, Ducommun Incorporated has gone from repairing watches for prospectors to supplying the world's most advanced aerospace programs, including the space shuttle, military aircraft, and virtually all new civil airliners. The company divested its metals and electronics supply businesses, hitching its wagon to high-tech aviation. Ducommun celebrated 150 years in business in 1999."

I have an old Starrett catalog from 1938 with their name on it and I just bought a framed Decimal chart on ebay with their name on it.

Any suggestions on cleaning up the Morse chart as it has some light rust on it, I was thinking rubbing compound?

The collection of small pocket size reference materials, including decimal conversion charts, belonged to my paternal grandfather. He worked at the Ford River Rouge Plant for 35 years. The large chart belonged to my maternal grandfather. He worked at the Dodge Main Plant for 42 years. Every family gathering included Ford/Dodge debates between the two.

Dang, Jim! You’ve really got cars in your blood. I wonder what they would have thought of your MG?
Here is another Starrett one and the plate on the side of my drill press.

Hey Don,

Cars were EVERYTHING growing up in Detroit. Literally everyone in my neighborhood worked in one of the plants or in some associated auto business/dealership etc. As for the MG, remember that my uncle bought it in 1959 and owned it for the next 60 years!! He sold it to me in 2019. So, prior to having kids, my uncle and aunt (daughter of my maternal grandfather) arrived at family parties and events all the time driving the MG. Both of my grandfathers were familiar with it, with my maternal grandfather probably being more so. As a little kid, I remember the car just being around...... family picnics, visits to my cousins, etc. It was always in the background.

The interesting part of the story was the fact that between 1959 and 1963, the MG was my uncle’s every day driver. After he graduated from college in 1959, he took a job as a designer/clay modeler at the GM Tech Center and parked it in the employee lot. For the next several years I think he got some negative comments from co-workers about it. He ignored them and kept driving the MG to work. Finally, an executive uncharacteristically sought him out and “casually” asked him why he hadn’t bought a Chevy yet. I guess my uncle got the hint. Anyway, he ended up working in the GM clay modeling studios for 38 years. While his Chevys came and went, he hung onto the MG.

I kind of went off track here. Sorry about that. The MG is loaded with Whitworth sized nuts and bolts. In an effort to check the decimal equivalents of the Whitworth fasteners, I printed the chart below.

Here's my Brown & Sharpe decimal chart that I use everyday, it's small but it's on a shelf directly in front of me when working on workbench for easier viewing held up by a watchmakers poising tool/perfect table easel for small decimal charts.

Here's also some others but not really decimal charts and sadly I do not use them but I bet Propmaker probably uses theses daily and keeps them in his chest pocket for the quick calc's he's doing.:)

mhein,

Yes Ebay is the usual spot to find one. Prices are hit and miss. Be sure to get one with nice colors.

mhein68,

Try asking Kennametal, Accupro, Hertel, Chicago-Latrobe, Morse.....etc. You'll most likely have to call them and ask politely about there give away charts that the marketing dept have. Chart maybe free but expect to pay for shipping, so see if they'll give you a couple charts and give to friends
