Found a Snap-on KRA-429B three drawer intermediate box on FB. Came with a bonus of Kobalt USA sockets found when I pulled the drawers.

Really nice condition and fits my 56/351 top and bottom from my Grandpa.

Short story, I bought it for $100 (delivered), if you are interested in saga that was the purchase it's here:

Thanks Lugz.

Zack, You ****!!! How do the cylinder and piston look?

Mike

Piston looks slightly scored on the exhaust side, most usually are. Ill dig in to it later this week once I get a few other projects done.

At the minimum it will be good for a few parts.

I am surprised by the number of folks that purchase quality tools and don't seem to take care of them. Good find

It's awful. I worked for a guy once who only bought Stihl equipment because "It's the best." He never did any maintenance on anything, and when it started acting up, he wouldn't bother to get it fixed or work on it himself, he'd throw it on the curb and buy a new one because his "time is too valuable."

No, I don't know where he lives, before anyone asks. He was an awful person to be associated with, treated people like disposable robots. I have no idea why anyone ever considered him for management.

Gotcha. Can't wait to see it all cleaned up!

Picked up this odd lot at a local online auction. Anyone spot the reason why?
Ended up winning for a whole $10.1616721849_c5275a76_62b-2.jpeg

Yep, You ****! Those are neat.

Now the magic question, does it accept a drive tool? I collected a some of those and several no longer accept a drive tool. Very strange, there is no damage or wear.

Went to an estate sale this weekend and picked up quite a bit but haven't had time to take pictures yet.

Also we were throwing out this Behemoth at work. A 42" 1" Drive Wright Railroad Ratchet. Couldn't pass up the freebie. It won't fit in the ratchet box though so I will have to figure out some sort of arrangement.IMG_20210328_180556256.jpegIMG_20210328_180614438.jpeg

You ****! I just picked one up at the flea a couple months ago for a good deal, but yours is a much better deal! How were they throwing that away?

I don't know about that wrench, but it's simply amazing what gets thrown away at companies when there's a management change.

When there's a push to clean up an area, once something is old enough to have been depreciated (and isn't used enough to justify the space it occupies), even "Lean" guys will push to get things off the premises.

Office renovations are a great source of free metal cabinets, usually in pristine condition.

No need for it anymore. We had a line that was was a flash in the pan of sorts that build some large industrial machinery. We used to adjust tension on a belt for the equipment and it worked quite well. Everyone knows at work I collect tools and it was laying on my desk when I came back from the shop.

Nice, you didn't even have to hunt it down! I have a reputation like that here too. Now they don't even throw tables or cabinets away without asking.

Snagged these from a retiring heavy duty mechanic for $130 kanuck pesos. Originally I only went there for the gray ratchet but when he started saying prices I couldn't resist.

OK, looking good everyone! Lots of neat, interesting, and downright weird things are being found, and now that we are on the cusp of spring, sales should be opening up all over as people need to find a little cash, clear some space, and get rid of their husband's junk!

So let us take advantage of it!

And now that I have rested from my vacation, 3000 miles in a week is a little bit taxing at this point in my life, I can show you the goodies that I picked up.

Proto LA tool board, the reason for an additional 300-mile side trip. I picked up one more of these upon request of Smokeshow, which I have yet to deliver. The tools mounted to it I already had, and more have been added since that photo. More will still need to be found.

I was able to make it to one of my favorite swap meets, one I hadn't been to in a few years, picking up the following: two Proto LA 1/4 sockets, Blue Point and Williams 5/16 combos, Proto flare nut wrench, Long C 1/4 breaker bar, and a Cornwell double socket wrench from the '30s. The P&C Ratchet and Duro box (empty, contents were mine) were from an antique mall, along with:

A vintage desk magnifying lamp, which was on sale. It is now mounted on my workbench.

There was other stuff I picked up, spending way too much money, and a few breweries I stopped at, and great breakfast joints - The Western in Bozeman Montana stands out!

Great haul. It’s hard to tell from your picture but the bar sitting next to the 17” S-K breaker might be the crossbar that goes with the breaker. If there is a groove in the middle of the bar, that centers the crossbar in your breaker which has a spring loaded ball in the handle to fit in that groove.

I believe they are different thicknesses, but I don't know for sure.

That is a very nice looking SK set, by the way. Super clean.

No kidding on the nice looking SK set. I really love SK. Reminds me I need to get to work on building a good set across the board on my own.

FB Marketplace purchase. I responded when the posting was only about 5 minutes old. The seller said his son used it and it didn't spool wire after that. Only had about 3 hours on it total. A new spool of flux core and a good cleaning and it works great! $35.

Today's haul:

Can of Kroil--a little more than half full
Starrett 604R rule
Snap-on Ratcheting Right Angle Screwdriver Set $3
S-K Tools 40954 Spinner (came with the S-K 5/16 socket attached)
Craftsman 43372 Spinner
Proto Pebble 3720 5/8 Flare Nut Wrench
Proto Pro Handle from a Sliding T -- I thought it was a cross bar
Diamond-M (Mossberg?) 41-B-154 Cross Bar
Blue-Point Heavy Duty Automatic Center Punch
New Britain NDF-50 3/8 Combo
The Central Tool Company (Germany) 4" Brass Calipers--Inches & Metric $3
GM Goodwrench 60909 9mm Combo? The Box End apparently has not been broached. The inside diameter of the hole is 8.5mm according to the brass calipers.
Blue-Point LTA1618 Long Tappet (1950)
Snap-on OEXM180 Combo (1985)
Starrett Micrometer Set Box (empty) $2

$1 each except the three items noted. Unfortunately, the PO was a prodigious tool marker. Almost all have his initials or name etched in the tool.

Nice finds OR. I really like the Starrett box.
Ditto. And I have a few empty boxes as well, as well as some empty tap and die boxes. I have no hope of filling any of them, and I sometimes wonder why I pick them up. I've never thought this before, but they almost have a decorative quality. With the lids and hinges off, arranged in a frame, they could almost be wallhangers.

Today's flea market haul (Lugz 2021_22)

1943 date coded JP Danielson waterpump pliers, antique stevedore hook with stacked leather washer handle, Billings ball-pein, Corps of Engineers "US" "1942" HK Porter parrot beak wire cutters, and the only J.P. Danielson CONTROLLED STEEL "S" wrench I have ever seen in the wild.

Thanks, gents! I thought I would see what this year yields in the realm of Starrett mics--if nothing, I'll probably just put it up on ebay. Mrs. Radar has difficulty coming to grips with the box's decorative quality...

Today was a rusty Snap-on day. An older gent who enjoyed restoring VW Bugs was powering back and divesting some of his equipment. He had an eclectic grouping--along with the Snap-on there was some Proto (didn't see any Plomb), Craftsman, a little S-K, Cornwell, MAC, Matco, a fair showing of Taiwaneseium and a couple pieces from India. Unfortunately, as seen in the pictures, it seems he treated it all like ****. Who knows, maybe he got it all at Estate Sales for pennies, too.

Anyway, I usually like to make my finds presentable before posting, but this was just too much effort--some of the pieces I can't yet see the model numbers. So I've decided to devote today to researching electrolysis. I've already got a good power supply and I'm sure I can scrounge up a plastic tub--it's the pesky details I'm foggy on.

Besides the SO haul, the items on the right are:
Craftsman 12" Adjustable, Y-Circle
Mustang 1/2" MS 41 Ratchet, which unsurprisingly, looks just like the 3/8" Husky CB 41 I found last week.
Craftsman Long C DOE No. 3
Two Proto Grind-Offs--2009 & 2013 Brake Bleeders

I didn’t know for sure either so I double checked today. They seem to be exactly the same other than being drilled for the second ball.

OR, electrolysis is easy, don’t overthink it - which is totally counterintuitive when you’re starting out. Just use some washing soda (more is better) in your water to improve the flow of ‘trons. And don’t use galvanized metal as your sacrificial piece, it’ll create heavy metal-contamination. It’s a line of sight process, so closer to your sacrificial metal and deducting piece are, that helps.

I’ve never used it with tools, but it’s crazy easy with cast iron skillets. And ductile steel vises.

both Evaporust and an E tank have their place; if the tool i plated with anything. keep it out of the E tank. That's where Evaporust is better, or, if you are OK with the time it takes, use a 10% molasses solution.

. And don’t use galvanized metal as your sacrificial piece, it’ll create heavy metal-contamination. It’s a line of sight process, so closer to your sacrificial metal and deducting piece are, that helps..

I know not to use stainless due to the heavy metal, first I’ve heard of galvanized having that problem, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I wouldn’t use it for other reasons, thinking it was electro galvanized (coated) making it having less easily sacrificial ions to offer.

I have always felt that ezapping things is fastest in the line of sight, but it does work outside of line of sight once the easy rust is gone. Other people’s thoughts on that?

both Evaporust and an E tank have their place; if the tool is plated with anything. keep it out of the E tank. That's where Evaporust is better, or, if you are OK with the time it takes, use a 10% molasses solution.

If you mean like chrome, cadmium or nickel, that's a big percentage of the rusty tools I find. From what I've read, the process is supposed to leave everything alone except the rust. Can you give me a vector for more research on this?
