Can of Rustpaint Rusted out!

I had a can of water based galvanized tremclad primer, and the bottom rusted out and the paint dried out inside.
This can was sitting in a cardboard box on a dry shelf with 5 other cans of oil based paint which are all fine.

I always wondered how water based paint could stop rust? Or was it something in the galvanized part?

Apparently the Rust paint was not applied to the outside of the container; or based on your location the paint may have frozen at one point and undergone phase separation.

It definitely didn’t freeze and the other cans next to it were not affected,

I’m pretty sure it rusted from the inside out.

I have had the same thing with other paints in the original can sitting on a wood shelf in a very dry basement 10 ft away from the boiler

In the rust belt engine oil pans rust out, usually a pinhole causing loss of oil.

Pretty common, IMO, for a water-based paint to rust the inside of a paint can after long-term storage. Think of the air space in the can as a near 100% humidity environment.

The rust prevention is for the dried coating film of course, not the wet stuff. And most paint companies don't go overboard with can coatings it seems. Even the polypropylene plastic gallon paint cans have rusted out around here -- through the metal lid.

This makes me want to buy a bunch of oil based rust paint while I can still get it!

I'm guessing cans are sealed with a vacuum. Once you break the seal, its a race against the rust.

I was amused to find a can of Waxoyl in my shed with a rusted out bottom . . . Waxoyl sold in the UK as a rust preventing cavity wax top be sprayed inside vehicle box sections.

In their defence, I reckon it rusted from the outside in, and the 30 yr old Peugeot I reasonably regularly spray it inside seems to be lasting well, despite standing outside in the weather for most of those 30 yrs . . .

I had a gallon jug of PB Blaster rust out. That made a huge mess on the workbench.

IMO, manufacturers are using cheaper cans for all their paints. I have some ultra premium Ben Moore that I purchased for highlight colors--the quart cans have rusted within a year--indoors, on wood shelving (but admittedly, we do get some high humidity days.) Also just used the last of a Ben Moore stain today that was a couple of years old--still usable but showing a fair amount of rust on the outside.

These all rusted before other cans that are much older that have been sitting in the same location.

Paint roller trays--same deal. Tops of brushes (even the so-called premium brands)--rust quicker. So do roller frames. I'm putting it down to cost saving and worse product.
