unkqty You **** on that Kennedy roller for $10.

Tireman What looks to be a nice Wilton bullet vise with original paint plus jumbo sized jaws for $45? Way to score your first Wilton!

Arrived at 8am this morning to get a first hand look at a the contents of a CL ad for "Antique plane collection...over 40 planes". Once bad pic with a table covered with hand planes. There was maybe 2 or 3 I might have been interested in. Had to pass. Nice to see the picking picking up.

after quite a dry spell, picked up what appears to be a kennedy model 275xb rollaround box, complete with assorted castoff tools (incl. a few proto items) and hardware.

it required a few hours of of cleaning and lube but well worth it.

still need to wipe it down w/acetone one last time.

shown with the craftsman machinist's box picked a couple years ago.

now have a place to put all the machinist tools i've been collecting over the past several years.

selling off the assorted tools at next yard sale will more than cover the $10 purchase price.

Great find on the $10 Kennedy, Unkqty! That’s a you ****.

Last Wednesday was the wife's birthday, so we spent Saturday doing wife-type things, such as going to a tulip festival. Which left no time for rustling about in people's garages. So, I attempted to make up for it today. I hit five sales, three were productive. The first had apparently been sold in its entirety last night, and as I put my list together yesterday I didn't realize they had pulled the ad. Too bad, as that one looked the most interesting. In any case, the next three were OK, nothing great.

From the first sale, a set of .22 scope rings, Lectrolike and SK Wayne combo wrenches, a Bonney DOE, a pair of unused Stanley chisels, Millers Falls putty knife, a Harald screwdriver with a 3/8s drive opening in the end, and a pair of Cresent electrical needle nose. $10.50 for all that. The next stop yielded the Stanley brace, which still has the sales sticker on the end piece, for a whole buck. And lastly, I picked up the geometric C driver, two yards of upholsters jute, and the Mowet book for $3. And that last stop is where I should have started, as there looked like a lot of interesting things had been there, or were still there; a steam box for bending wood, a nice Craftsman table saw, and so on. Oh, well.

Also, later Stanley like the above often gets overlooked, but there is a sweet spot for picking up general use tools like the stuff above really cheap. They get passed over by the collectors and ignored my the kids as they aren't power tools, but they are solid users still.

Catching up from some sales earlier this month.

First pic is an NOS 1997 Goretex bivy cover from the flea, and a bunch of USA files, which I thought were GMTK spec. Wrong sizes, ooops. The bivy was about 1/4 the cost of a used one around town, so that was a nice offset.

Pics 2 and 3 are from the same sale, which was heavy on Craftsman Heritage. I mostly restrained myself, even returning some nice condition C-man ball peins to the sales table. Been looking for one of those small (newer) carry boxes for a while. The old school MMO bottle caught my attention, and Simple Green for cheap wasn't getting passed up.

Then hit a TOO the same day, and found this stuff. Outlaw, the 10-68 Coleman 502 fired up with the fuel that was in it. Marbles No. 9 hatchet head, which seems to have been rehandled. Cool Pendleton necktie. And a WW2 GMTK correct Barcalo LDBE. Ball pein is, IIRC, a Plumb 1-lb.

Generations of 3/8" ratchets: 50s(?) SnapOn FV71, SnapOn F830 from 1992 (after a rebuild kit installation, which cost multiples of the wrench itself) and an SK 80200 which came new from SK, as part of their March steals and deals. FV71 is LOW tooth count (14?), F830 is 30 teeth and the SK is 90 teeth.

That "some sort of rust prohibiter" runs about $10 a can at retail and is top quality stuff. For that alone you would warrant the accusation of lowered atmospheric pressure. Add in the rest of your haul and, well...

I was only able to hit one sale this weekend on the way back from purchasing a used baseball pitching machine for my son.... I got there and of course was told, oh the tools wont be out until tomorrow...well then why the heck did you put out a sign advertising tools and list them in the ad? So irritating. I didnt have time to return but I did pick up these 2 sockets... a fairly typical proto 6pt socket and then this 31/32 plomb. I havent cleaned them up yet but the 32nd sizes are not real common in my experiance.

I had one of the best days of my life today, folks, and even picked a few tools!

Today had been on the calendar for a couple of weeks for a Daddy-Daughter date with my youngest, a real firebrand who turned 10 a couple of months ago. After a fantastic lunch of buffalo burger (for me) and mac-n-cheese (for her), it was off to the used bookstore (just like her momma, older sister, and yours truly, she is a dyed-in-the-wool bookworm) then... Well now, what do we have here?! I'll be doggoned if on the way to pick up ice cream we didn't drive right into the parking lot of a pawnshop!

Once inside, I got a tug on the sleeve from a little girl that had a HUGE grin on her face: "Dad? What IS this place?"
"It's a pawn shop," I replied; "why?"
"I LOVE it," she said.

Alrighty then. One hurdle crossed.

"Wanna help me look for some stuff?" I asked as we approached the 5 brimming five-gallon buckets full of sockets.

No reply this time, she just dove right in. I spent a few minutes explaining how to identify what we were looking for without reading each and every socket and she was off to the races! (Actually, while showing her to look for the "Holetight" on Plomb sockets, I reached into the bucket and found another SR for Don...)

We spend about 10 minutes scraping the top layers off the buckets before diving into a plastic tote full of wrenches. In short order we had excavated all the way to the bottom of the container and along the way, found a small handful of treasure.

On our way out of town, from the backseat I hear, "Dad, when can we go on a date again? I want to go back there and help you sort some more!"

Yep, I'm the luckiest man in the world. Beautiful Wife that not only puts up with me but actually seems to enjoy it and 2 amazing girls, one of whom may just have been converted to a next-generation picker extraordinaire!

By the way, she claimed the Oxwall 1/8 and is starting a set for herself...

We found:

Plvmb 5428 7/8
Plvmb 1214 7/16 combo
Plvmb 3320 5/16 DOE Obstruction
Proto 3320 5/16 DOE Obstruction
Proto 1212 3/8 Combo
Proto 1216 1/2 Combo
Proto LA 5419 19/32 x 1/2
Proto 5420 5/8 x 1/2
SR 11/16 x 3/8 (Don)
CT's Oxwall 1/8 Ignition Wrench
$3

Thanks for reading along and happy picking, Y'all!
John (and CT)

I was cleaning out the garage a couple of days ago and was about to throw out this ice ax that had been hanging on the wall for several years. I bought it at a yard sale a long time ago. I think I paid $5 for it. I was this close to hauling it to the curb when i thought, maybe it's worth something. So after poking around on eBay for awhile, it turns out it's a special forces issued ax to the US Army's 10th Mountain Division during WWII. I posted it up on eBay and it sold for $325!

You never know what kind of rusty gold is lying around in your garage.

CMC: Wow.... Just, wow...

I have a family full of war veterans (WWII, Vitnam), but nothing at all came back with them. Well, my Dad may still have some uniforms, and a watch that he bought over there, but nothing used in the battlefield.

That ice ax was very nice. Made by a company called Ames. I think the handle was oak. I saw that one sold on eBay for $600. I had lots of "watchers", but only one bid. Anyway, it means a lot to someone out there, so I'm happy to send it along.

This is the beauty of yard sales/garage sales - history, nice people, tools, and sometimes nice adventures.

Made by a company called Ames.
And at the time, just a forerunner of the future (and now vanishing...) giant and ubiquitous hardware store chain!

Those kinds of WWII hand tools (shovels, pick-axes, etc) marked 'Ames' or 'Baldwin' or 'Baldwins' were made by the Ames Baldwin Wyoming Company, formed in 1933 with the merger of the Ames Shovel and Tool Company, the Baldwin Tool Company, and the Wyoming Shovel Works. (Note: this is not a reference to the state, but the Wyoming area of Pennsylvania.)

In 1999, True Temper (a brand owned by American Fork & Hoe until 1949, when it became the name of the company) was bought by Ames, becoming Ames True Temper, and later, The Ames Companies, then just Ames.

For a sense of just how gigantic, powerful, and all-consuming Home Depot and Lowe's is, if you're younger than, oh, say, 45, try to imagine a time when mom and pop hardware stores complained about Ames as the (Big Bad Evil Conglomerate) Borg, and then think about how it's large hardware chains like Ace and Ames that are complaining about Home Depot and Lowe's now. That's how far the hardware business has gone. When former conglomerates look like outdated small potatoes.

Thanks for that history lesson Lugz. I'd never heard of Ames before. They made a first rate ice ax though.
First rate everything. The pitons they made for the 10th Mtn Div are just as rare, and almost as big a payday. Maybe you have one hanging around your house! :) Looks like a small body hammer with a rectangular head and a spike on the back end. Has eye for a wooden handle, but two forged in reinforcements. If Google 10th Mountain, you'll find an image lickety-split. I don't have one.

Thanks again Lugz for the history. I had no idea.

UPDATE!

I got a text from the buyer and he said the ice ax will be part of a military display located in western Michigan which is free and open to the public. I will provide the address when he sends it for all you Wolverines and Spartans.

Very, very cool.

I pulled a "True Temper Flint Edge" axe out of my Grandfather's (RIP) basement last year. I don't know if it was his, or his father's (or why either one of them needed one), but it's really cool looking and seems to have been lightly used, and definitely not abused.

Any idea of its age?

Mike

Lugz, I just picked up a True Temper Kelly Works axe head & it has what appears to be a rivet passing through the handle socket. Have you seen this before?

Do any of you ever regret a purchase? Not because it wasn't a good deal but because of the amount of work it takes to deal with it?

I've been looking for a Snap-On KR537 to go on top of my KR557/547 combo.

So checking FB Marketplace I see a listing with only two bad pictures and the title "two tool box with tool". (First two pics below) $700

I spotted the 537 among the stuff, so immediately messaged the seller. They said they wouldn't be "back in town" until the next afternoon. So I asked them to let me be the first to see it and they said they would. Sure enough they messaged me about 4pm saying they were home if I still wanted to look, jetted over to their house expecting to see the stuff stacked in the garage like the pictures showed.

When I pulled up to the house I see a pickup truck completely packed to the gills with tool boxes, tools, and totes (full of tools). There was actually one more tool box than was shown in the FB pictures.

The only thing I really wanted was the KR537 (65th anniversary edition) but he absolutely refused to sell separate. The reason the stuff was in the truck was it all had belonged to the wife's father who had passed and they were clearing out the house which was 100 miles away ( where the FB pictures were taken ) for a sale closing.

I'm standing there looking at this metric ton of stuff knowing how much work was involved but seeing some good value besides the box I wanted. It was all strapped in and piled up so I really couldn't even see everything.

The clincher on the deal was that he offered to drive his truck to my house and help unload. OK Sold.

Darn it takes a long time to empty all the drawers, pull the drawers out to clean the slides, sort through and clean the tools, etc.

Anyway I'm a long way from finished but figured you guys were the only ones that could understand.

Five Tool Boxes

Snap-on KR-555 roll cab and Snap-on KR-550 top box

Snap-on KRH537SCGX 65th anniversary top box

Mac Tools MB505 side box

Unknown Heavy Truck Box (has an upside down Homak badge but I haven't had a chance to really inspect it. It's extremely heavy full of tools I don't even know what's inside yet.)

Some tool highlights. Bunch of heavy old USA pullers, Snap-on CJ2003 rear axle puller set, 12 USA 3/4 drive sockets, 23" Plomb breaker bar, 11 Snap-on deep 1/2 drive sockets and various Snap-on specialty tools, bunch of old air tools, just a bunch of stuff. Quite a few I can't identify yet.Screenshot_20210428-000501_Facebook.jpegScreenshot_20210428-000440_Facebook.jpeg20210427_215315.jpeg20210427_215334.jpeg20210427_215418.jpg20210427_215511.jpgreceived_1403143306719863.jpeg20210417_195229.jpeg

Damon, it does look like you have your hands full! At first, it looks like a you **** deal just on the boxes and the highlights. Who knows what else you'll find!

It is always good to have cash available. Lots of good deals are missed by not having the cash with you at the time.
