Milwaukee Wi. area. I have never seen an infestation like this.

maybe an invasive species of geranium - your Ag. Ext. agent will know for sure - call them up - Yer Taxes at Work

you can kill them with a 50 cal bullet or 2-4-D

or a flame torch to be safe if you, wife, kids, or pets use the lawn

That is purple deadnettle. Common winter broadleaf weed. The control should have come in the winter with a good pre-emergent treatment. That said, you are partially screwed at this point.

Weed control is going to be driven by the type of grass you have and what it will tolerate. You can practice some physical control by mowing a bit low and catching the clippings. A decent weed and feed will help a bit but I imagine in Wisconson you might have to wait a bit (or is your lawn completely greened up already?)

I doubt the neighbors would appreciate the .50 cal bullet idea.

Commonly known as henbit. 2,4-D will handle it.

^^^ This. It's an early spring or even winter weed -- it'll sorta respond to treatment now and will disappear on its own over the summer. Definitely get on it early next year or before winter.

I always have some in my yard, usually minor enough that I can walk around plucking it as it comes up. It pulls out pretty easily.

Tenacity should do it.

I'm in Milwaukee and have some extra if you are interested in trying it out. Shoot me a message and we can connect.

That's "creeping charlie". For me, I spray annually with Ortho Weed B Gone and it controls all of my weeds quite well. You may have to do a followup treatment the 1st year, if it's very thick.

The best way to prevent them after you've got it under control is to maintain a healthy lawn and not to cut the grass too short.

Yes, Weed B Gone works, if it doesn't contact your local Noxious Weed Department.

like everyone stated above... you have to have persistence. it is not a treat/spray once and you are good to go. it was pretty bad here this year as well. i maintain my lawn, but with a warm wet winter, weeds came out in force, but since i do my maintenance and treat it on a schedule i did, it is pretty much gone. what is left i pull out :)

I have these weeds too. From your pic it looks like creeping charlie. It is very hard to kill and will take over your lawn if you don't take care of it. I was told dicamba or tricolpyr work best to get rid of it. It may take more than one application to kill it. I hit mine once with dicamba and they appear to be turning brown. My neighbor let me use some of his Lesko 3 Way Selective Herbicide which contains dicamba. If you don't have to many they are shallow rooted and pull out easily but I have a lot. Creeping Charlie has purple flowers and the leaves have little scallops around them. I think some call it purple ivy to.

Henbit is lousy around the Midwest this year. I have seen farm fields that look like that’s what they’re growing on it.

This just started growing in my yard this year too. (I think it's the same plant anyway). Since I'm in Phoenix, it grew this winter. Seems to be dying off now that it's getting hot. I don't ever remember seeing it in my yard here before. I did weed and feed a few weeks ago. We'll see if it comes back next winter.

It will probably take two applications to get it all. I completely eliminated it and every other weed except quack grass but even that hasn't emerged yet this year. I used the Bayer Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer.

I've got a good patch in a weird spot that washes out.

Seems to be popping up in my lawn. Going to let it be.

Also have a front yard full of white and blue flowers. Not sure what they are but they looked fantastic for 3 weeks.

Goal is a no mow green space
