A single item from the free pile at a moving sale today. Is this a high tension insulator from WAY back in the day? Check what I assume is a weight or load or tension rating on the corroded metal portion. 15,000 pounds !! It‘s quite heavy. The brown part is porcelain.
The hole in the bottom lug is 5/8 inch diameter.

Does anybody collect these? I sure don’t intend to! :)

Or sell it on eBay to someone who collects them. https://www.ebay.com/itm/274799703212?hash=item3ffb56b4ac:g:vUQAAOSwRh9gkYT9

I havn't figured out how to work the quote on this new setup.
Hit the [+Quote] button on one or more posts. (That's just telling the system which post{s}s you want to quote. You won't see them appear anywhere until the next step.)

Hit the ["Insert Quotes...] button. (That puts the quotes into a Review Selected Messages box in the order you selected them. You can change the order by dragging them up or down with the [=] buttons on the left. At this point, they are still not in the Reply Box.)

Hit the ["Quote Messages] button. (That puts the quotes into the Reply Box.)

Make sure your reply to each quote is typed into the lighter grey space under or between quotes, not in the darker grey quote field. If you find your cursor inside a quote field, just move it into the lighter grey space.

EDIT: Note that you may edit quotes, removing the parts you're not addressing. You may also remove photos.

Small haul from the flea (Lugz 2021_37) this morning.

20210611_083500.jpg

The double deep offset DBE is one of those unbranded CHROME MOLYBDENUM marked jobbies with cool little forged oval size fields on the shank. I have 4 or 5 of them. Hoping this is not a dupe, but I don't keep very good records with my partial DBE sets.

The adjustable wrench multi-tool was made in the UK. As most of you know by now, I'm a total sucker for things like that.

-D-I- socket is 19/32".

The unusual pliers (not linesman, not seen in this position but very wide jaws, and no cutters) are "Red Devil". Which one is the question they beg. More on that in the S&H thread later.

Farm implement or possibly welding/gas/tank related.

$110 for everything!
That's ridiculous! I don't include prices in my own reporting, and I normally ignore it in reply to others - just my preference, no judgement on anyone else, but this deserves comment. I always wonder how this is even possible these days. Was he unaware/uninformed of the value of anvils? Just completely careless? Or were they free to him and he in a hurry/motivated to move them?

I don't normally include the prices. On this one I felt that I should. Not for the "suckage", but hopefully for those who feel like the deals are all gone. I don't care for those that claim all of us "hoarding" things making it impossible for them to find things at a deal. I feel like those on this thread who score the biggest are also the ones putting in the most work and pounding the pavement. This deal was a right place right time barn estate sale where they hadn't really gone through things yet and the early bird got the worm.

Oh, they're out there. Not as often or as many, as sellers - even liquidators, who really only care about volume and pace, have caught on. But there's usually a good and interesting reason for a price that ridiculously low, which is why I asked.

Amen.

Thanks.

Hopefully you didn't take anything I said the wrong way.

Lugz, those pliers you picked up today look like they are for holding/breaking glass. That is why the jaws have a gap.

Edit: maybe for floor tile, but work the same way.

Picked up a few things over the past week or so. This is a few of the highlights.
Fulton 1/2” socket set that appears complete $6
B1309083-692D-4D4C-9086-FA9A79CF638E.jpeg
Stevens Walden 1/4” case but unfortunately didn’t have any of the original items. $1
8D57A32C-C985-4B5D-9054-A76978EC6653.jpeg
Thorsen 1/2” ratchet $3
Plumb hatchet and an “old time” warranted axe that I can’t seem to find any information on. $8 for the pair

Snap on side cutters. I think this matches my vacuum grip linesman pliers that I have as well. $.25

You **** on those Snappy dikes for $.25!
$2 is a common price around here for seller-unrecognized pliers, but you’d think most would recognize Snap-on. I routinely snap up any Vacuum-Grip pliers I see offered at flea or garage sale for less than $5, regardless of type. Even rusted to hell, they generally work well after a deep spa treatment. The only ones I pass on are the ones with cutters blown out from snipping a live wire.

I was surprised as well that my handful of small wrenches and the dikes were quoted at $1 for the lot. No need to barter. My lineman’s pliers were actually brazed back together at some point and I actually like the look after I polished them. F91B67E9-8FBE-4A95-8AF6-8E451CA69AAD.jpegI don’t use them for heavy gauge but they work well for simple household wires.

Holy cow, this must be newer functionality. I just tried it like this, and I had ~20 message quotes queued up, from multiple messages, in both forums. It was never working right, or obviously operator error, before. little bit of a pain on the iPad, but beats getting off the sofa right now.

Thanks again for this Lugz

Same thing happened to me! When I was trying to figure it out, I was hitting all kinds of quote buttons. Little did I know that it wasn't doing anything except saving them in memory. When I hit ["Insert Quotes] there they all were in some new window. Now that I'm used to it, I like it better. It's really easy to move the quotes around. You don't have to worry about multi-quoting in the order you plan to reply before you hit the quote (the way it used to work).

I like the auto-draft function for similar reasons. Sometimes I start to reply and realize I don't have all the little factoids (exact dates names, etc) on hand or off the top of my head. I will jump to another thread and do the same thing, or pause for second thoughts, and move onto a third thread that's a quicker reply. Or remember that I really had something better to do than sit on GJ all morning! HAHA. At any one time I may have several drafts auto-saved. Then when I go back, it's waiting there for me and I can just revise and finish and post it.

Much joy is to be had this week! Not only are the sales popping up as summer is nearly here, but Smokeshow informed me that two of my favorite swaps are back on this year! Both the local Branch 15 Early Day and Vintage Tractor swap, and the Steam Up swap. Super glad to hear this, for even though they are at the end of this month and the end of next month, they are a lot of fun.

Anyway, today was a weird day, with lots of running around, mistaking a planned stop for a TOO, stops being rained out, and so on. Oh well, such is the game. I did manage to make it to a tool estate sale, half Harbor Freight, a lot of 90s Craftsman, and a little bit of goodness.

I'm sure nobody else cares, but just out of sheer curiosity, and because it's only 36 years old, not yet meeting vintage age, here's that junky multi-tool advertising its U.K. Registered Design No. 1027912 on its black mottled composite hide, and, just above that, in mottles arranged as letters, what I suspect is the OEM's name (Koon Hing) from Kowloon (Hong Kong). Crappy import, but even crappy imports have an interesting place in history. :)

Can't hardly add to the Suckage awards! Dang!

The 200 looks good! I can't see the whole vent but no chips? rare! can you post a shot of the Globe markings? Extra points if period correct! (they changed the markings over time and replacement globes often stand out for that)

Eprey has been going nuts on many lantern prices (except the later green 2 mantle "commons") but a clean 200 can easily get all your $$ back, maybe more?

58 still had the "tall" vent, and was prior to the color changes for burgundy and cherry in the early 60's (these go for even more... )

Scored these little doo dads for a dollar. Can’t find much on the brand name “giller”, and they look like some sort of crimpers. I don’t think they were ever used. The wrench is a old school snappy.

Haha! No I've NEVER done THAT! :ninja:

Funny story, in HS a friend (Chip) was converting an old shed into a "bed room" (Parents fought like cats and dogs, and he was sharing a bedroom with his dad...) This was done right; we stripped the shiplap off, wrapped it in tar paper, and re-applied the ship lap -then insulated and sheet rocked, and added some wiring -it even got a tiny gas room heater

Chip was on a step ladder messing with the wires for the overhead light and asked how to tell if it was live - another friend told him "cut the wire" and he did!

Chip landed on the concrete floor, and we laughed our asses off!

The Giller pliers are for wire hose clamps (I have a pair of 1980s Craftsman the look like those).

FYIW from the web:

"The company existed in Dallas, Texas in 1955 as the Giller Tool Supply Company, then as the Giller Tool Corporation in 1962. ... Hydrometals bought Giller in 1963 and liquidated assets keeping only the name. When Hyrometal bought toolmaker Thorsen in 1968, Giller became a division of Thorsen."

Nice, thanks! I’m going to keep them as on some cycles I work on they use those wire clamps for air lines and this will make things easy. Appreciate it.

Small haul yesterday. No tool sales in the local area but I spied one in a small town south of S.A. So I spent $10 on the tools and probably twice that on gas...
But I brought my wanna-be garage dog with me and we both enjoyed the trip.

The General Tool V-Blocks still have the rust-preventative coating on them. They must be older because I can't find them under the "No. 1000" designation.
The Starrett Tool & Diemaker's Square is also older because the current models have a scale on the narrow blade.
The General Tool No. 777 Center Gage was in the box with the Starrett Square
I've picked up several circle-H Long-C Craftsman sockets recently. I'll have to get organized and see if I have a set forming.
Three Circle-U Craftsman sockets
Proto L.A. 704-S 4" Adjustable. I paid a lot less than $499 for a nicer example!
Starrett No. 41 6" Firm Joint Hermaphrodite Caliper
Couple of 1-1/16" sockets--one is a Wizard, the other Thorsen
Also included was 8 sqft of 1/8" cork drawer liner which everything is sitting on.
