VERY slow; I got a socket at the local Flea, but those sellers are doing the price for antique malls adn Eprey asking prices not reality. Passed on several things that were overpriced. I also keep hearing ""Oh! USA Tools!" adn stupid $$

Hit about a half-dozen sales planned today, and one TOO.

51243510384_b54ff5f298.jpg
Electrical engineers handbk, Klein bag, Proto phillips #3 bit socket, welding magnets at the first stop. Fleet ratchet, Proto LA 1/4 extension, Plomb 4916 socket (!), random deep socket clip from the used tool store. Fluke 73 from the next stop. Next couple were duds, but I found a TOO tool sale, were I picked up the geometric C pushdrill, BOG ratchet with 1/2"-3/8" plug, Penens extension, and Snap-on flex. A nice day.

A handful of Snap-on 1/4” drive sockets, a Snap-on speeder, a Mac socket, a couple DOE metric Craftsman V to help fill out a set, and a Plomb swivel socket I rescued in case anyone needed it.

MrsLS & I headed northeast to the Blue Ridge Flea this morning. She was on a mission to find a cast iron skillet for one of our neices.
EE7BCD8F-61E7-4172-BE3F-61E4DDE8D3E7.jpeg
I cherrypicked a few alphabetical metal stamps to fill some holes in a partial set, picked up a pair of Bridgeport universal pliers, a Winchester-branded 8” Stillson wrench (with a tiny crack I didn’t see at the rivet), some Bonney tappet and other DOEs, and a Craftsman bitbrace with the grip and pommel made of that stinkdriver plastic that exudes a white waxy film.
A7E29517-7921-46FB-958E-E0E10FD180EE.jpeg
It will join a set of bracebit augers with caps made of the same stuff.
I studied a 24” all-steel Stillson hard for a while, finally determining it was a Walworth and not the Bonney I wanted it to be.
Then we headed south toward Quakertown Flea, with a slight detour and lengthy stop at St Isadore’s RC Church parking lot flea market.
39D073E3-792C-4018-B3AD-6D9F0357B22B.jpeg
There I picked up a 5” pair of what the 1963 Utica catalog calls 1000 Giant Button’s combination pliers, offered then in only 8” & 10” sizes, a Stanley No51 spokeshave, a candle wick trimmer, and a handsome, dark green, 5-tier paper tray made by Currier Mfg Co.

6458F8BF-6B87-4C0D-B16C-F1199D367F5B.jpeg
At Quakertown, I picked up two DuroChrome “XO” tappet DOEs, and a Bonney Triangle LocRite 11/16 socket.
Last two stops (Allentown) were nonproductive.
The insect world was quite active after last night’s soaking rain. The cicadas were loud and flighty everywere, and on the drive home, I caught two black-legged ticks crawling up my torso. Not sure exactly where they found me.

Out of many sales this weekend only two looked promising for tools so that was all I hit. First was a dud but the second had a decent amount of mechanics hand tools to peruse. For whatever reason I've been running into quite a few private sales with tool truck brands which is unusual, at least for me.

Blue Point metric reversible ratcheting wrench set

Miscellaneous 1/4 drive Snap-On sockets, hose pick and long handle side cutters

Couple of nice finds today. The first is a Zyliss, Swiss made portable, all purpose clamp. Brand new in the box. Paid $5 for it. The second is a really nice Craftsman 3/8" SAE and Metric socket set with "Easy-to-Read" sockets. That is until the laser etching wears off. It does have the 44995 ratchet which retails for around $50 by itself. Paid $4 for that set up.easy02.jpgclamp.jpg

Something that drew my attention today, but not my cash, was a wood level. From several yards, I saw it had the three raised ribs in the grip trough, for which William Disston held a design patent. Sure enough, the 29Oct1912 patent date was stamped on the brass plate, but…
the company logo was SARGENT!
Hmm! Guess Disston made levels for Sargent…OR, Sargent made levels for Disston…but why would Disston allow Sargent to use the patented grip design?

EDIT - here’s another one on eBay.

I know there's a thread devoted to ridiculous eBay listings but I can't remember what it's called. I can't help but pick up these 4" adjustables at estate sales for a buck. I think I can resist this one:

Rare PROTO Los Angeles 704-S USA 4" Adjustable Wrench Tool -Measures 4 1/4” Long--$499.00 PLUS $4.25 Shipping!
Went to a few local Tahoe sales yesterday and was shut out. Maybe I’ll list my Proto LA 4” adjustable to try to get over not finding anything. I would let mine go for $489.00 and undercut the market.

These old Coleman mantle-type lanterns are going for huge money. The 200A Sunshine model sells for $100-$500 depending on condition. That one is in really nice shape with documentation!!

Well done!

I hosted a college graduation party yesterday, and am attending two high school graduation parties today! That may be one of the reasons for fewer sales. That and the rain!

Of course, the rain doesn't slow down bmw or Davefr

Thanks, there's a ton of Coleman stuff around here but everyone seems to go for the red single burner lanterns. The green two burner lanterns and camp stoves tend to get passed by. I guess there's a lot of nostalgia with old Coleman. (me included). The smell and sound of these Coleman stoves and lanterns is something I'll never forget.

Pristine 200's go for stupid $$ and most go over seas

Having said that there are a lot of overseas buyers that "buy" and never pay... Thailand in particular recently. Japan, not a problem...

220's from about the D model on are a hard sell unless in perfect condition or with a hard to get globe or accessory, (amber globe, mantle safe on the bottom, or a Coleman reflector....)

228's do a little better (the wide brim vent, adn different bail are the only difference..)

People with also pay more for a "birthday lantern - one the year adn month of someone's birth... I've managed to get examples of a 200, 228 adn a 500 stove for mine. I have one lantern for my oldest daughter, I can't find a date match for my son or youngest daughter... I'd get one for SWMBO. but she wouldn't care.

Stoves are another hard sell, especially the common 413, 412, 426 or later stoves.

Older or rarer models do better; rarely huge Money, but better.

Propane is generally give away stuff.

Much joy is to be had this week! Not only are the sales popping up as summer is nearly here, but Smokeshow informed me that two of my favorite swaps are back on this year! Both the local Branch 15 Early Day and Vintage Tractor swap, and the Steam Up swap. Super glad to hear this, for even though they are at the end of this month and the end of next month, they are a lot of fun.

Anyway, today was a weird day, with lots of running around, mistaking a planned stop for a TOO, stops being rained out, and so on. Oh well, such is the game. I did manage to make it to a tool estate sale, half Harbor Freight, a lot of 90s Craftsman, and a little bit of goodness.

51239952877_23d8267da7.jpg
Plomb pinch bar, Challenger, Duro Chrome, and Snap-on 1/4" ratchets, five Duro Chrome sockets, P&C dbe, Duro Chrome extension, and Wright AC42 extension.

I got a few things at a sale I stopped at after work yesterday.
1963 Popular Hot Rodding
AC oil change tag
Sparta a308 8” adjustable box
Crescent t412 tin snip box
Wards Airline clock radio

That oil dipstick tag and the hot rod magazine is beyond cool!

Hit about a half-dozen sales planned today, and one TOO.

Hit the small flea here today and sat. Not much to look through this time. Hit the big monthly flea and it was so humid and hot I only walked half of it. Very slim pickings. I did meet a fellow GJ fella with a bunch of Wilton bullets for sale. Even a baby with the factory sticker still on it, I ended up finding a set of HD Smith offset pliers I have been looking for for a long time! Dug them out of a pile of old rusty stuff. 5 bucks! Also, some small Plomb wrenches, a Proto LA Socket, Matco swivel 17mm deep min deep socket, Herbrand, Blackhawk, and Bonecon wrenches. and a big old crusty Blackhawk 1 1/4 socket. Also...not mine but my brother brought home the goods yesterday also..... new project. !961 International Scout 80!

You should post those on the H.D. Smith thread. Why have you been looking for them, in particular, for so long?
I have been slowly picking away at finding those tools in the wild over the years. First time I have come across those pliers. I also found the big split flat blade screwdriver there 3 years ago or so. It was painted gray. But the paint came right off. It was $3!! I do need to go find that thread! where is the HD Smith thread? I searched and cant find it. I must have the dumbs...
Back when I was still think of another car project, a Scout 80 was on the short list. I love the cab/truck bed versions like that one.
Im really liking the looks of it myself! We just did a 1969 K5 blazer and sold it. Now back to a 1970 C10 and this scout 80. Alog with a notch back mustang drag car and a couple of Model A's.

Made it out to a couple sales this weekend despite the rain. First was an absolutely packed machine shop with tools and parts stuffed into every crack and crevice. It was pretty well picked over as far as hand tools go but I got an old mystery tool box along with a few combo squares and some other random stuff that's sitting in the evaporust at the moment.

Second sale was someone's old garage workshop, the first day I was there they had a few Stanley planes that I wanted but they refused to budge on price. Bought a cool little Kennedy small parts bin for 12 bucks, ended up going back the next day (50% off) and the planes were still there except for the little 220 block plane. Ended up with a Bailey 4 and 5, plus a giant Craftsman jointer for 40 bucks. The 5 is rough but it should clean up fine. I intend to use them so they don't need to be super pretty.

The mystery tool box I got at the first sale is covered in this horrendous maroon paint. Tried some simple green and it doesn't do anything, pretty much seems like the only way to get it off is sanding, but that ruins the original red underneath. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm contemplating just stripping the whole thing back to bare metal but there are no identifying marks and I'd hate to sand off a print or stamp that might tell me what it is. It's damn heavy, that's for sure.

Even though local sales have been unproductive, my neighbor and I have been going through an old workshop being demolished by another neighbor. We keep pulling interesting items out of the building. Here is a set of Weed tire chains with the bag and an early Ronson wrench that was originally part of a set.

Same. I have a small collection. Made a little display for them. I've never seen the offset pliers.

The thread is in the A-Z Index of threads in the Sticky at the top of the page, under Smith.
I think this is it:

That's it.

That green parts cabinet has a great look!

regarding the red toolbox:
something you can try (CAREFULLY )I have successfully used oven cleaner to remove the top coat of paint. I used the dollar store spray on oven cleaner and try leaving it on for a few minutes then wiping with a paper towel, and finally rinsing with water. if you leave it on too long it will damage the base paint and get you to bare metal, so do small parts at a time and start with a bit that does not show. But I have used this method to remove multiple coats of rattle can spray and also years of overspray from an old garage box while exposing the original paint.

Outlaw,

I am not a "serious" collector. I just like the lanterns and I buy them in pretty much any shape if the price is right. I don't have any idea on the actual dollar value to the collector market. I couldn't tell this one was as nice as it is. Barely any paint chipped from the bottom edge of the fount. The vent has one chip. The rest is very nice. Please let me know if this is the correct globe.20210613_152352.jpeg20210613_152345.jpeg

That Kennedy box is sweet!

Had a nice score this weekend. One of my regular GS guys (cleans up estate sales) was back at it, one of only 3 within a reasonable driving distance. Grabbed a small pile of stuff, and as I was getting ready to say done, wandered around the last part, where some guy had been hogging the view of a bucket the first few times I tried to look. Finally got over there, saw a decent condition green tool box. Went back to the other side, a modernish Coleman stove had been blocking my view of the box. Popped open the top, saw what looked like a decent set of sockets, ID'd a few as an SK, lifted the tray, and saw more tools. Got a quick price, added it to my pile. The total pile went for much less than I would have given for the box alone (<1/3?).

R - L: Blackhawk 508 1/2" speeder, Lufkin Leader 50' tape measure, Plomb 5449 1/2"ratchet, SK and Fairmount 15/16" wrenches, Wagner 11" No Fat Fry pan, with not necessarily matching lid, bunch of bitty nut drivers, Champion deArment 420a (and a similar Williams, hiding in the truck), MF 1/2" chisel, Buffalo Barcalo 9/16"obstruction wrench, Lectrolite wrenches, Goodell Pratt pushdrill w no bits, Snappy 13/16 socket 3/8 drive, Stratton 22" brass bound level, 1 broken plumb vial, SK box with a 4503W set inside, plus other goodies, and a Bogen 3011 tripod without a head, but I have 3 spares already.
IMAG4764-X2.jpg

Some detailed shots of the goodies. The SK box was pristine by local standards, maybe 80% original paint, big bow in the front which pushed out with hand pressure, and a bit of bowing of one end tray, caused it to scrape on the box, which a few clamps and blocks fixed. Riveted logo with the Up arrow, metal carry handle. looks similar to the 1949 catalog. Quick spritz with simple Green, and we are good.
IMAG4780-X2.jpg
The official SK 4503W contents, seems to match the 1949 list (Oops, the Cross bar is in the wrong pic, didn't realize until now that the Flex head was so gunked up it didn't fit, now it does)
IMAG4775-X2.jpg
IMAG4776-X2.jpg

The name brand / useful to me tools from the box, Wright Stud extractor, Craftsman Long C / Circle H Flex bar, unmarked cross bar (belongs to SK set PN 41650,), BP-DIV-T-249xx (weird spring hex bit holder?) socket, Proto socket and extension, Vaco 3/8" driver, Eng wrench, New Britain DBE, two more Lectrolite, 8" End nippers, unmarked, anyone recognize the handle pattern, Utica diagonals, brake pliers, and an oddball feeler gauge (3 sizes, 2 adapters). Millers Falls divider, Walsco Tape measure

IMAG4777-X3.jpg

The bottom of the box had vintage tools of the mechanic's trade, not much that will get use. Timing light, vacuum and compression gauges, starter Amp gauge, pinch clamps, spare drain plugs? , 3 circular spring steel things (any clues?), misc fittings and screws, and chalk. I forget what the far left thing is, the rubber is marked Gates, the ID is 2-1/4". Swore that was for something like fan tightening, but its been wayyyyy too long since I've seen one.

IMAG4779-X2.jpg

From different piles outside the toolbox, was this variety of screw and nut drivers. I wonder if some were from a supplied equipment kit, multiples of the same sizes. Jerrold Seaboard in Red is a multi sized, rusted stuck, Stevens Walden Spintite 1/4" in translucent yellow, wooden is marked 555a, and is 3/8", Bell systems pusher in yellow (KS 20827 L1). The left screwdrivers are marked 610B, the sockets are marked 556A, 544A, and 476B, and are 1/4", ?15/64?, and 3/16. The one black screwdriver (363) turned the opposite way has a tiny slit at the end, any clues as to its usage?
IMAG4773-X2.jpg

Somewhere, a Proto 9855 screw starter, and Williams pliers, slightly larger than a CL420a, hid from the pictures.

Quite pleased with the haul and the price, the SK will probably become my go to set for 1/2" SAE needs. The frying pan will add to the queue of those needing cleaning and seasoning, and better storage space.

Thanks for the suggestion! Supposed to be nice out this weekend so I'll drag this into the yard and try the oven cleaner method. I'll make sure to do just a bit at a time and start on a spot that's not obvious.

Even though local sales have been unproductive, my neighbor and I have been going through an old workshop being demolished by another neighbor. We keep pulling interesting items out of the building. Here is a set of Weed tire chains with the bag and an early Ronson wrench that was originally part of a set.

Don, that underlined Ronsen screamed Ronsen Lighter fluid to me, and sure enough, its the same guy early in his career!

MR W:

This is your Globe (below) but what is the date on the bottom of the fount? the tall vent and yellow border on the label scream 50's to me... Its not a 61 or 62 for sure.

1962-1977: Curved “PYREX” over red Coleman parallelogram. Has the ® and the lantern image in the parallelogram.
