So, it’s been a while since I’ve been on here. Pretty sure nobody missed me... No, I’m sure.

Anyway, I thought some of you might be interested to see what I’ve managed to pick up in the last few months.

I’m planning to build a little garage shop just for fun and decided to go for what I really wanted. So as not to bore, here are some pictures!

And here is some stuff that came along for the ride with them.

There is actually a great deal more stuff than this but I don’t want to post 5 pages of pictures.

These are both three phase machines and I’ll be adding a VFD to each.

But before all of that, I have to pull a sub panel to the garage... and finish the garage.

Should be fun but I’m hoping to be done by the end of summer. If anyone is interested in following along I can post updates. If not, enjoy the vintage machine pics!

Looks like you scored. I have no problem with 5, or more, pages of machine tool pictures. And yes take us along on your journey of getting this all going. Once up and running do you have specific needs or goals for your shop?

Great scores!

Just need a dovetail toolpost and you'll be ready to roll :)

A person can do a lot of stuff with just those two machines, a horizontal bandsaw would also be a good friend to have...that can lead to a welder....glad to see you're enjoying the adventure

I was surprised how quickly I wanted the welder after getting the mill.

IF I were you I would write with a paint marker or engrave your follow and steady rests with the model of machine that they go to. Ive been to places selling machines with literal piles of rests and not 1 clue as to what they could possibly be designed for other than the center height measurement and the geometry of the foot that touches the bedway. But those are not many clues to go on....by marking them, you're doing your part to help future generations of "old iron collectors"

That's a clean Ang-Lock vise! I have one of similar vintage but has undergone the "angry beaver attack" in a previous life.....

You are 1/2 way to having a complete high school metal shop in your possession. I’m very jealous. Used to spend all my spares in the metal shop. Oh the things I could build with a shop like that.

Sweet! I have Lathe/Mill/Welder/Grinder/ vertical bandsaw/ - I would get a Port A band saw to start. I have used that more to cut materail to ruough cut than i throught. Its quick, easy and inexpensive. I mean yeah I want a horizontal one as well but space is tight in my 14x21ft shop with everything in their already!

Looks like a Causing 5900 series.
Great lathes, nice size for home shops
10"or 12" swing and 24 to 36" bed.
Does it have a taper attachment?

It’s the 10” swing version of the 5900 and has a step pulley speed change instead of the hydraulic variable speed pulley. Unfortunately it did not come with a taper attachment.

The skid-o-parts I bought with it is mostly Clausing 5900 stuff though. All sorts of gears, steady rests, follow rests, vari speed parts, and a few half nuts.

Great purchase, what made you decide to go with VFD's instead of a rotary phase converter? I'm in the market for one of these for a 5HP 3 phase Weiler lathe.

A few reasons. First, I’m very familiar with VFDs and machine controls. So designing and implementing the conversion is very much in my wheelhouse. Second it’s cheaper because they’re both small motors. Third, I don’t think an RPC is worth the hassle and work since these are the only three phase loads I need to run (right now).

I also plan to use dynamic braking on the lathe when the “oh ****” button is used since it has no brake.

In your situation it might be a toss up. Five Hp is right around when drives start to get pricey.
