Today is Craftsman day. Lol. Ace Hardware is having a sale for the Fourth of July everything pretty much except Green Egg grills and power tools are 50% off. I know everyone may think new Craftsman is junk. It’s not really it’s actually really good. I’m especially excited about the Gunmetal ratchet I love using my coworkers so I know I’ll like this one. My parents bought me everything but the wrench. I’m so grateful for it. I needed the 1/2 flex head since I don’t have a regular size one just two bigger ones. Also the breaker bar is nice. It’s all made in Taiwan too so that’s a plus. I’m so thankful that my parents bought me this stuff. Today is their 29th anniversary and I was going to buy them something but they insisted on buying me these instead.

My parents picked these up today at the Ace Hardware sale again. They were on my list of needs. I don’t really need the wrenches they are to fill gaps in my set until I find USA made ones to replace them with i’ll still keep these as extras once I find USA ones. I used my other ratchets from the last post at work today and man I love them except the polished ones the selector switch is backwards but oh well at least on the Gunmetal one it’s correct but I can get over that. And Craftsman has been good to me about warranty so I’m supporting them. They are also building a factory here in my hometown so I’ll be excited to see what’s made here. Today I split a 15mm deep socket on a drain plug that was super tight and I emailed Craftsman about it and some other broken stuff I have again and they said replacements will be on the way.

And for those wondering about the sale I’m referring too is my Ace stores are independently owned by the same people and so they all have the same sales but other stores may not have it. They have it every July 4th and New Years.

I have the complete gunmetal set I picked up from Lowes on clearance, I have been happy with it, and the ratchets are nice. Non-serviceable, but as a DIY guy I have only had to open and clean a ratchet once, and that was my original set of late 80s vintage Craftsman ratchets. I picked up one of their smaller sets 2 years ago as well for a road kit, does a good job. I'll admit, I like the color too, and my set is all 6 pt sockets which was a good bonus.

I have no idea if our Ace was doing a similar sale - probably would have popped in had I known. Then again, I have bought too many tools this year to fill in gaps for various repairs. I did find an open box HF ICON flex 1/2" torque wrench though, and the coupon even worked on it, so that was nice.

Yes they are sealed ratchets but you can always dunk the heads in ATF and make them smooth if it ever does start to fail. An old mechanic showed me that trick.

While I'm waiting for Summit to fill my order on the Astro Thor Air Hammer I decided to add this to the order. The price was right, and it ships free since I met the threshold for free shipping with the APT-498K air hammer order.

I have the other 3 Astro ratchets, and I've been waiting for this new 1/4" version to show up on Amazon.
From the looks of it, it's not actually available on Summit yet either.

It's not, but Amazon didn't have it and their price when I bookmarked it was a lot higher, $33.59. I have to wait either way, and was able to get free shipping because the order for the air hammer is still waiting to be filled. So for $19.99 @ Summit I'm in. I saw it somewhere else for less but I needed a $49 order [IIRC] to get free shipping. Their shipping cost killed the deal.

As much as I like the pair I recently bought when using the pulling section I often end up cutting the zip tye, I might try dulling it a bit but then I do like them tight.

Last week I needed some really micro tip style needle nose type pliers and well just received these Xuron model 450 Tweezer Nose smooth jaws.

They look promising and have high star rating so hopefully this will work out as I hope.

Price wasn’t to bad for $17.00 bucks.

What do you think of Capri tools? Are they made in Taiwan? The price seems a bit high to me for imported tools but they look really well made and they are based here in Southern California just a few miles from me. If I remember right their warranty is very good, too. Will you buy more?

All the tools I bought are made in Taiwan. It just showed up last night, so I haven't got a chance to use anything yet. The chrome looks good and I like the large size stampings. Even the sizes on the 1/4" stuff is easy to read. I'll giver a better review once I've had time to unpack everything and give it some use.

I've got a brake job coming up and splurged a little. The backpack promo with the flex ratchet and other goodies sealed the deal. Prices seemed comparable to Tekton and Sunex.

My other boxes are blue and grey and red. The orange was nice for a change but I still like the blue. At least it’s not yellow or green though LOL. This one definitely stands out but all my coworkers like it.
you can get all the way out of here with that green hate
Got a big boy box. KRL1022.

20210702_120056.jpg

Very nice box, I picked up a KRL 722 a while back in the exact color combo I was looking for. Also think I got a good deal on it, seeing as I keep finding KRAs listed for far more than what I paid for a KRL in the same size

Picked up a Proto 1-3/4" combo wrench and a 1-5/8" 4 way angle head wrench for cheap on OfferUp.

Next day, got an NOS SK 3/8" drive deep impact swivel socket set. Put the 9/16" to use right away.

What do you work on that still uses SAE?

Had $10 or $15 in rewards from Summit. I bought a pair of Sunex 3/8" angle wrenches and a single 7/16" wrench for header bolts. The 7/16" is still in shipping.

This is my first foray into Sunex tools. These were bought to use on header bolts. Not even close to being impressed with these. The design is worse than lobster claw wrenches from China. These are made in India.

I have a feeling these are going to be chucked right into the scrap bucket.

Wow. Sorry to hear that, those do look pretty crude. It's amazing that tools like that are even made in this day and age. Kinda sours me that a brand like Sunex would put shite like this out there.

Yeah, my thoughts too. I've always heard good things about Sunex here. The 7/16 should be here today via UPS. Thankfully, the Summit invoice includes a return label.

On the bright side, with a $10 rewards from TSC, I picked up a new wire brush and a set of 3 step drills. Im expecting a few uses out of these bits and they will reside in the $13 box in the addition.KIMG1134.JPG

Purchased a set of Capri maxchrome mini wrenches with the latest email/flyer. They are described as super low profile. Nice packaging but slightly thicker than my facom mini wrenches, probably should've kept the 29.99 in my bank account... but ... Impulses...

mini review of malco eagle grip locking pliers:

i've seen two types of packaging so far:
  1. cardboard box
  2. plastic hanger (thoughtfully designed to be usable on a wall or pegboard for tool organization, see back of packaging in image below)
malco eagle grip hanger.jpg

yay:
  • made in usa
  • overall quality including beefiness, thumb screw, thumb screw knurling, reinforced thumbscrew thread cap, sharp teeth
neutral:
  • i'll probably never use the wire cutter
boo:
  • wimp mark -- personal taste... i always try to use good PPE, but i think it's lame to put that on a tool. btw, did you guys know that coffee is hot?? derp
  • QC issues (explained below)
malco eagle grip wimp mark.jpg

i have three samples: 1x LP10WC, 2x LP7WC

LP10WC: no complaints. perfect jaw alignment. sharp jaw teeth. the teeth at the jaw tip are also cross cut for extra grip.

first LP7WC: perfect jaw alignment, but the teeth at the jaw tip are not cross cut as deeply as my LP10WC. i doubt it adds any extra grip.

second LP7WC: imperfect jaw alignment, and the teeth at the jaw tip are very shallowly cross cut (worse than the first LP7WC).

jaw alignment issue:

malco eagle grip misaligned jaw.jpg

poor teeth at jaw tip (good LP10WC, comparatively inferior LP7WC, and useless LP7WC on the right):

malco eagle grip shallow cut teeth.jpg

i might exchange that last LP7WC on amazon. for this price, i'm kind of looking for perfection. sorry to do it to you, malco.

overall impression is these are by far the nicest locking pliers i've seen.
What is the mark? I see it circled, but can't tell what it is?

GP 9714MD 1/4" deep impact socket set and some power steering fluid. I got the impacts because my SK's wont stay on an anvil, freaking annoying and the last straw was when my 12mm SK went flying at high speed across my garage (M12 impact). The GP's hold on great to every anvil I threw at them

Some reviews said that GP's aren't roll stamped. They are. For comparison, SK on the L, GP on the R. . .

Some spares. For $25 I couldn't say no. The look new and are the same date code as my full set. Also some more pictures of the Capri haul. I love the size stampings.

Craftsman, SK, Capri comparison.
