I really like the looks of the Proto Precision 90 and want one. However, I don't need one. I probably wouldn't get much work done because I would just stare at it.

Love both of my precision 90s. Got it to compare with the LP90. The LP90 turn out Meh, proto built a much better ratchet. Only complaint I have about the proto is that it doesn't come in a locking head or comfort grip. You can get the Mac version with all those features, but at a higher price. I got both my ratchets for under 90$ each.

I don’t feel that the Sk Or the Proto are better than each other. Why do you feel that Proto made a better Ratchet? I do like that it has knurling on the handle, but I prefer flatter handle like the craftsman USA paint brush ratchets how the comfort grip dual 80 is flat on the bottom. I don’t know if the Proto is better, bigger head in most ways to other ratchets so space could be an issue and having more teeth engagement vs the SK is great for strength but most of the ratchets I have seen fail are broken anvils and not pawls so I don’t see a design advantage. No Ratchet will ever be the best for everyone, I like tools and like seeing design improvements want to continue to see them. Both SK and Proto have had issues with these maybe they rushed them, don’t know, I was not into tools back when other Ratchets were introduced but I don’t recall other brands having broad issues like this, with forums like GJ these problems get brought up.

I remembered to look at my friends proto ratchet again J5449HTC not a smooth ratchet, It’s 90 teeth, told him to call proto about a rebuild kit the reversing lever moves a good bit when you spin the anvil, decent amount of back drag, loud for 90 tooth. My new Sk LP90 Wins hands down in back drag vs the Proto, only example of the proto I have encountered so it may be a dud!
Don’t let the light back drag on the proto fool you, it will hold. I’ve thoroughly abused mine and it’s yet to do anything except tighten/loosen the bolt. ive Put sk through some abuse so far too wrenching on cars at home. Imo the back drag on the sk is way excessive. The proto has taught me that the back drag doesn’t necessarily equate to anything to do with strength.

the j5449htc is the same one I use at work and what I have pictured In this post. Take the cover off his and see if its the same as the above pics

I have both and I like the Proto better. But that doesn't mean I don't like my LP90's because I really like them too. I just think the Proto is smoother operating. The handle knurling is a nice touch but it's the mechanism that gets my vote.

I also like every one of my Tekton 90's. Flame on.

quality alone makes the proto a better ratchet, I like my rachets chrome not to peel immediately after removing it out of the package. The LP90 has a lot of issues out of the box, mine had peeling chrome on both sides of the head, the switch was super stiff, and would also get stuck to the point that I had to disassemble it to fix it.

The head size on the proto is barely an issue for me besides, I have specialty ratchets for that. If that's a concern for people I wouldn't go proto or SK, my 72t Koken is superior and sometimes cheaper than both.

Anybody got any first hand experience on something like a proto vs nepros?
I received my Nepros 1/2 longish handle 14.5 inches, and used it on a couple projects. It’s a really nice ratchet, chrome is excellent jewelry quality, very low back drag koken is the only ratchet that I have owned that has less, I’m a quick release fan so that is a great touch as well, fit and finish it A+! Head is a little narrower than Matco 88, but a little thicker, good balance no soft grip or knurling so I will have to see how it works with greasy hands. No comparison to the proto, no way I would pay anything close that what the Nepros cost for a proto, if you can’t find a 1/2 long handle proto for under a $110 imo buy the Nepros, the proto is just not on the same quality refinement.
