Glad to hear everything is ok with you and your family Marc. I just thought you were having too much fun on that new tractor and ended up doing all of your neighbor's yardwork when yours was done.

If only I had the time :ROFLMAO:

Pic of last night's mow. Grass was unruly, it really needed swept after I mowed, but I was ready to be done for the night!

Had some pictures of the headliner material on the phone. Close but no cigar on the roll....at $85/yd, I'm only doing this one time!

Yes you have be delinquent.

Rain? I had to look up last time it rained. January. Up to 1" this year so far.
Lawn is looking great, I assume you are overly critical of how your own turf looks, like many of us. But fishing with your boys IS more important. Just have them do the yard work, what could go wrong?

Does OEM headliner match the rest of interior such that any deviation of new will look odd? Wise move holding out for the correct material.

Thanks Justin! With the current mower, I'm the only one allowed to mow the front yards...I *need* straight lines, the ones you see in the pic are from 2 mows ago. Keeping the yard looking nice is already a tough endeavor being in the country, but it's even worse when you can't spray the weeds!

OEM headliner and interior are still a perfect match. Between being stored inside and/or under a cover and the good tint on the windows, the interior is still very bright red and new looking. Most I have seen with this interior have the headrests and top of the seats in more of a pink shade.

Here we are, another month gone without an update.

Been staying busy with yard work, baseballing, and trying to have some fun in the middle of it all.

Serviced the 'burb last weekend, noticed the bottom of the fuel tank was wet while doing my inspection underneath. Decided there must be a pinhole leak or a small rust seep in the bottom of the tank between the plastic skid plate. There was no drip, but it was definitely fuel with no signs of it running down the sides from the top. New tank and fuel pump module ordered same day. After finishing up the oil change, I cleaned the outside of the rig up. Tried the Turtle Wax ceramic spray product, initial shine is better than the Mothers CMX product...we'll see how the longevity is.

This weekend my nephew from AZ was visiting, so I had an extra set of hands. Took longer than expected to swap the tanks, but the process is done now. Fuel pump was the factory original, so it was probably a good thing to change it out. While I had the tank out, I hit everything back there with a good coat of Fluid Film, so hopefully that will slow the rust worms down, as the frame and underbody are still in great shape. Still need to get the front brakes done and then it will be "finished" up with current maintenance needs. Brakes are OK, and pad wear is even with lots of life left, but I'm upgrading the rotor and pads to something better.

Baseball is now over, so after I get the in-field sprayed again, I'm done with my ball duties for the rest of the summer. I've been on the hunt for a K20/K2500 or K10 regular cab long bed pickup. Haven't found the right one...yet. I was considering picking up a 2014+ Tundra Crewmax, but my financial self explained to my "fun" self..."you can't keep the 'burb and have a Tundra."...and I can't part with my 'burb. For those of you keeping track at home, this may seem a bit odd, but after 15mo of ownership, the 'burb still remains a joy to drive and hasn't given me that, "yeah, but what if I had THIS?!" feeling.

Well, if you get another older truck, say a K20, you can keep the 'Burb and not worry about financial side.

Then pour $$ into the project, but have no payment. However you need to justify. :)

Might as well see if you can find a nice K30, so it already has a 14b/60 so you can run 40s or better.

Wow, 15 m. Impressive for you.

I can stomach a sub $10k project, but I can't stomach spending $40K+ on a pickup...just can't do it. Not too mention, KS would be charging me close to $900/yr just to tag it 🤮

A K30 SRW would work, I've actually got the feelers out for a M1028 CUCV that has the factory locker in the D60 up front. Problem is, a few years ago they were giving them away, and now $6k seems to just get your foot in the door. 40s are probably not going to happen, I'm guessing 33-35" tire, no more than 4" of lift. Just need something to crash through the brush with to go fishing and do things that I can't bring myself to do in the 'burb. Shooting for a clean rust free rig, but the overall paint situation will not be a key note for the purchase decision.

Wow, 15 m. Impressive for you.

Right?! It's got to be some kind of new record!

Well, this weekend ended up fairly interesting.

Friday at about 3:30-4pm a coworker stopped by my office to give me grief. He informed me he had purchased a different pickup and was looking to sell his current driver...a 2001 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner TRD Off Road, 159k miles.

I asked what he wanted...the price floored me...I had to act cool and not seem to eager. Told him I'd stop by on Saturday to pick it up and look it over on my lift, wanted to make sure the frame was good and see what else it might need. He's not a mechanic of any sorts, so he asked me to make a list in case I decided not to purchase. Drove it home, looked it over, made the list. First off, has a SES light on for the forward O2 sensor, easy fix, needs tires badly (didn't realize how badly until I got it home), and some other basic doodads. Went back and dickered a little more on the price...lets just say I could probably triple my money tomorrow and not try very hard.

Put in a big parts order last night to get it up to my DD standards. Will pick out some tires and possibly wheels tomorrow. Put about 5-6hrs of paint correction on it to rid some of the tree stripes, buffed out the headlights, and did a DEEP cleaning on the interior. I don't know how some people stand to be in a dirty rig like that. It is by no means a cream puff, has dents & scratches, but it is solid and the AC blows COLD. I've looked into swapping it to a 4WD rig, looks like it isn't too difficult and can be done in a weekend with all the parts ready to go...It does have the factory E-Locker, so we'll see how it gets around this Winter before I pull the trigger. This should help save some miles on my 'burb, and save me borrowing the wife's pickup or hooking up the trailer when stuff can't go in the back of the 'burb.

Now on to the pics:

Nice score on the Taco Marc. I've been contemplating selling my 2006 Duramax lately as I really don't tow anything these days other than my small utility trailer and really don't need the HD truck. My son wants my DMax something fierce but I'm still on the fence as I hate to part with it. HOWEVER, IF I were to sell it I would have a hard time deciding between a lightly used Taco and a GM1500 pickup.

I think your new ride will serve you well and I'm sure you'll get it to pristine condition in no time. Looking forward to the progress.

Thanks Mike! For my intended purposes, this one should suit well. I need a "farm pickup" that I'm not as concerned with the exterior condition. Aside from some better bumpers, I doubt I'll do much else with the exterior...well, maybe a better set of wheels

I really was looking for a K10/K20 or another GMT400, but this one literally fell into my lap. The 3.4l V6 has enough pep to move it down the road, and from what I understand are damn near bulletproof. I'm still impressed with my wife's pickup, and this one looks to be even easier to work on. For us taller guys, I will comment that the room is considerably less than a full size, but not claustrophobically so. I would imagine a single/standard cab unit might be in that category. The 2nd gen Tacoma's like my wife's have more cabin room (and look better anyways).

I'm sure it would be hard to part with your pickup, lots of ways to look at it I suppose. If the tags/taxes/insurance aren't too bad, and since you know the maintenance history, it's easier to keep. There's always a "but" though :ROFLMAO:

^^Agreed. That is where I'm at now. The licensing/taxes and insurance are very reasonable and it just turned over 107k miles which is extremely low for a 16 year old model truck. Everything is perfect and no defects at this time so it is hard to part with it but IF I were to sell it I think it would only go to my son. I won't sell it to anyone else and I'm not sure he's ready to buy now as they just paid off his wife's car and refinanced their home. Maybe in a few years or maybe I'll just keep it as it will easily outlive me at this rate. Besides, I kind of like driving older well maintained vehicles compared to any of the new stuff out these days. I think older stuff that is well maintained and in pristine condition has more character.

Both of those sentences resonate very loudly with how I feel. The interior in my Suburban is far more comfortable than my 2017 F150 was...now it may not have as much built in technology, and uber wizbangs, but it gets the job done very well, does it simply, and is easy to work on if necessary. Plus, no one ever commented about how good my white F150 looked, haha, my Suburban always gets a nod at the gas pumps.

Marc, I know I'm old when I complain about technology but my lawn service guy bought a new truck this year. He was walking away from it the other evening and his phone got a message. Truck was telling him his right rear tire was at 22.4psi. In my day we locked people up in the loony bin for talking to their vehicle.

Too funny Bob! That is pretty wild, I don't remember if my F150 did that, but it would definitely email me info, and I could start it from my phone from on an airplane! All those things are nice, but I found it made me lazy about visual inspections and actually putting a gauge on the tires to check them myself!

Thornbirds man, everyone knows they are the best in every way.

I can provide a full suggested modification list if you would like.:giggle:
I've been told they are the gentleman's tire of choice. Alas, I bought Toyo's, however.

It wouldn't be right if you didn't fill me in on where to spend my money, it's probably my second favorite part of buying a new vehicle!

Ah, ok, good to hear, happy to help.

One possible direction is similar to THIS.😂 I like the low mount, giant MDT mirrors. Ignore the headers on the door. Extra wide rubber on the rear, ******* bars. Air dam may be a bit excessive for your roads.
Suggested but now shown; stacked light bars. 4 or 5 whip antennas. Yosemite Sam back-off mud flaps. Functional mail box hood scoop. Side pipes.

With the way things are going with technology, I recon it wont be long until your car will book itself in for a service, diagnose itself and order consumable parts when needed.

Imagine checking your bank account to find out your car ordered itself 4 new tyres, I think I'd be sick!

Nice looking Tacoma, I just realised they are essentially like our Hilux we got here. 90% of ours that are single cab, have a tray on them:

51309286532_328eb2bf73_c.jpg

Or you get the duel cab:

51310750894_a974e7ddca_z.jpg

yeah those old Hilux's are bulletproof.

We have newer models at work, yes the V6 goes like a skinned cat, great backed up by a 5 speed manual. I used to rip single peggers everywhere I went when was a first year apprentice in those models. Shock, they chewed threw a lot of fuel, so all the new ones at work are turbo diesel ha!

Well I bought a set of wheels yesterday, I've been going back and forth and a direction...my youngest son LOVES Back to the Future, so I guess we'll take an 80s themed build on this one. Picked up some black with machined lip Ion 171s yesterday to mount the Toyos on.

Parts start rolling in today to get this thing up to my expectations.

Went on vacation with the family last week, back to my old stomping grounds in Western NE. Came home to boxes full of parts ready to go on the Taco, and my internal batteries fully recharged.

Vacation was great, I was up around 5am every morning setting irrigation water, it was 2nd cutting of alfalfa hay, so we had plenty to do...nothing smells quite like fresh cut alfalfa hay. We put a new rear bumper on the Electric Banana from earlier in this thread. Did a lot of other chores that Jerry needed a second set of hands/operator for, around the farm. Lots of good food, and more importantly, great people!

Sunday we were home and I got quite a bit knocked out after 3 different trips to town. Swapped over the wheels and tires, much needed improvement in looks and safety. Changed the broken ****** mount, front O2 sensor, the rear diff oil, fuel filter, greased the driveline, and coated the frame with Fluid Film.

While working on the diff I pulled the actuator for the diff lock. The motor/gear spins free and it easily locks in place moving the rack inside the housing. I put it back together and got it to work out in the gravel after messing with it, but it still isn't right. Not sure if the motor just isn't strong enough anymore or what the problem is. This morning when I tried it again, I couldn't get it to lock the diff, it just kept flashing the light on the dash, tried creeping forward and reverse both...maybe one wheel needs to be spinning on its own?

Still need to get the front accessory belts changed, ****** serviced, plugs/wires changed, and do an oil change(not needed according to the sticker on the windshield, but I'll get it on my 5k schedule with my preferred oil). Waiting on plugs, first batch of six Denso's they sent me had 1 NGK plug and 1 incorrect Denso, and they were poorly packaged, so I sent them back. Hope to have all of that done next weekend.

On to the pics!

Some scenery from our trip, we weren't rewarded with the normal color swatch sunsets, too hot and too much humidity. Most of the shots are looking south, southwest, or west.

Diff-Loc fully functional. Did some reading over my lunch, sounds like my initial thoughts on wheel speed were correct. Most people on another forum stated to make a short turn or serpentine to make it lock. Just needed to get the axle shafts lined up right for it to lock. Filled the tank and added a bottle of Techron to clean up the fuel injectors, we'll see how it does with fuel economy.

Is the diff lock factory? Is getting it to lock when already stuck an issue, or does a spinning wheel allow lineup/lock?

New shoes look great.

Factory E-Locker...haven't been stuck, yet, to try it out. Just needed to get a small amount of difference between both sides and it locked up just fine, I imagine one spinning and one stationary would do the trick as well.

Thanks man!

Busy weekend, felt like I was running the whole time.

Changed oil in both the Tacomas at our place. Buffed out the headlights on my wife's after the service job. While I had mine in the shop, I did the plugs and wires. Plugs weren't so bad to change, very similar to the 4.0L in the wife's. Factory plugs remained in place @ 160K miles...I'm baffled it even ran, definitely runs much better now! You could shave with the knife edge on the plugs! This let me know what I needed about the timing belt(probably never been touched considering the plugs, recommended service is 90K). Timing belt/water pump replacement parts are ordered and will be swapped in a couple of weeks. 1st tank of gas in the green turd, I mean green TRD, was 17.34mpg....should see an improvement with the new plugs.

Made a trip to St. Joseph, MO on Saturday for some shower valve repairs. Local hardware/lumber yard only carries off-brand replacement cores, I wanted a Moen unit. Decided to stop in at Harbor Freight since I was in town and build another "cab bag" for the Taco, so I can leave my other one in the Suburban. Basically a 12" tote/tool carrier(I run a bigger bag with more stuff in the 'burb), filled with pliers (needle nose, slip joint, water pump, side cutters), adjustable wrench(/hammer), ratchet straps, cam straps, bungee cords, 16' jumper cables, multibit screw driver, knife, flashlight, tape measure, etc...

If you need a good flashlight, give this one a look, it's awesome for the money. I now have a couple and am always pleasantly surprised with the light output.

New Taco looks great, not a Taco fan boy myself but that a great DD in great shape and would've jumped on that as well.

Thanks Logan. I wasn't a Toyota dude until I bought the wife's pickup. Not sure I've reached fanboy status, but they are growing on me. For the dollars I can drive it for 5+ years and still probably sell it for more than I paid!
