Hey guys, adding some functionality to the garage gallery forum found here.

Essentially, we are added prefixes to the threads that allow you to search for garages by size. Here are the categories I have setup right now:

  • Below 265 SQ/FT (Standard US one car garage and smaller)
  • Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT (Standard US two car garage)
  • Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT (Standard US three car garage)
  • Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT
  • Over 1200 SQ/FT

What do you all think? Make sense? Helpful?

I know when I'm looking for inspiration, I always tend to look for shops around my size to see what they have done to maximize the space...

What's a "gagage"? ;-)

In all seriousness, I think this is an awesome idea! My happy place is just a 18'x19' wood-frame built in 1941, so all of the 30'+x40'+ new pole barn threads mean little to me and they all get caught up in my searches. Yeah, I'd love one of those, but no room for them on our little beach-side lots in SoCal. Being able to search by garage size would make the search function much more meaningful and efficient. Yes, please do it! :)

I think the size catagories are a great idea. Similarly, at least for myself, I am drawn more towards older/existing structures. Not too interested in brand new construction. Would anyone besides myself be interested in some type of age prefix?

I think it's good. Issues vary quite a lot based on that. Big garages and small ones particular have their own special problems and opportunities.

We can’t do multiple prefixes… so we need to limit it to one broad way of filtering.

Is this feature expandable? Size is important to some but being able to search for features like attached, standalone, loft, lift, fab, machining and others could be good search items too. This could be a bottom less pit......

lg
no neat sig line

No. It’s just a prefix… so we are limiting it to one filter. I chose size.

Anything that helps focus the subjects would be great.

maybe also include a few “descriptors” that should be use in thread titles...something like...

stickframe
pole build
masonry
shop included...
with living space
with bathroom

maybe the State it is being built in as some do not have location info listed.

just an idea.

Thanks for the effort to improve this and refine things....loving it...

Here's how I would do it:

TWO CATEGORIES:

1. Residential/House Based Garages. Regardless of being 1 car, 2 car, or 4/5 cars, these are completely different animals from
2. Giant pole barn shop builds.

Look. Giant pole barn shop builds are neat, but they often have unlimited budgets, and almost unlimited space. I still like them, but they are not applicable to the majority of the population.

And also, this was not Ryan's idea. I have been pushing this idea for YEARS and everyone told me I was a ******* *****.

I'm sensing some frustration here... I liked the idea of your idea instantly... and would never call anyone a ******* *****...

I'm frustrated because I've been pushing for this for years, and everyone was arguing with me about how confusing it would be, and I'm still super stoked about doing it but now it seems like **** people are like OMG what a great idea!

it's like bruhhhhhh. Look at the threads I posted. I'm sure I can find more. The mods would even lock the discussion to stop me from talking about it.

I don't recall ever seeing that... But sorry you faced so much hostility in the past. You must have been before your time.

But your time is now homie...

lmao. We are good. I just don't know when the tune changed. Glad to see something happen. BTW, that thread with a list of house based garages took me hours. Might be a good place to start.

I'm not in a place yet where I can spend hours manually updating threads. So, for the time being, I'm letting the thread owners update their own threads.

New here. When I try to browse the Gallery forum, a pop-up comes about New Thread Prefixes won't go away. There's no close button and prevents me from browsing?

Ryan,
This may be an off the wall request, but here goes.......could you move the "like" "quote" and "reply" icons more to the middle of the page. As I scroll down the thread with my iPad or tablet, I am constantly hitting one of those buttons inadvertently? If its fixed in that location I understand though.......
Thanks for making this forum possible, I appreciate it!
