Can anyone identify the age of this marathon electric motor? It's a berkel slicer, of unknown vintage or model.

If you go on google images, you might find one. I did for a T.Eatons one. Then I followed the lead to Vintage Machines.org.

Who pictures motors with the stamping sideways?! ;)

You could always try contacting them to ask.

Both companies have been around a century, though the general construction reminds me of motors popular about 60 years ago, considering the stamped markings instead of a riveted on plaque, or sticker. You'd probably have as much luck narrowing it down by asking Berkel or researching about the slicer model #. Since you don't know the slicer model #, possibly sending them a picture in a good orientation, or searching yourself for Berkel slicer pics.

Berkel is now part of ITW, who seem to have no record of anything that happened before they bought the company. They've not responded to a query for information (and my previous interactions with their food service equipment divisions have gone about like this: "No, we can't sell you a part, you need to have our authorized service people install it." authorized service people "we charge $1000 to show up, we won't have the part even if you tell us what's wrong, we'll will have order them if they're still available, and charge you $1000 to show to install it. But that doesn't matter, because you don't have an account with us, so we can't even show up. No, we can't tell you how to get an account."). I've sent an email to regal beloit, but they don't have a good contact list, so I don't know if it's a good address.

Somewhere on the net there is a fellow who does Berkel slicers. Try other search engines, google seems more interested in ads than knowledge. That will be your best chance. My best find was a small English chisel maker whose stamp was only used for 1908 to 1913. The biggest dead end was my Taiwanese lathe, It so common a lathe UK Lathes list it as Taiwanese Generic. A lot of shops made them from various suppliers of parts. The Grizzly was DF1237g . Nobody knows who DF was.

Many times I have found how the company name appears, and / or location can help to narrow things down as far as time period. Things as simple as Co. vs Inc, or Incorporated spelled out fully. Changing locations of the business often being useful etc. Logos can be very helpful as the styles tend to change to remain current with the times.

Looking at this time line from the Marathon site, the M over E logo seen on your motor appears to have been used in the 1960s, so likely the motor is no older than that and possibly no newer than 1970s as it appears they changed to a rectangular logo at some point in the 70s.
