In another internet context completely removed from the world of tools, old or new, I person I know electronically mentioned, out of the blue, Jakes just last week. I had to point out that I knew a couple people who were regulars there, much to his shock. I guess there is a farmers market attached?
One of my favorite toolmongers haunts Jacktown, Brimfield, and another one those east coaster's get to ransack on a routine basis. I just smile knowingly, but down inside it hurts, knowing we have nothing really close to the depth of tools they find around here.

Darn, I was off by a bit. LS, Chris, Lugz was my guess.
It sounds like a great time guys. Rickster looks organized as heck. That’s to keep other pickers away.

Lugz, nice finds. You lost me at left that Craftsman set behind though! :wtf: Please tell me you’re messing with us, or it was priced higher than the moon.

A small one, I think, yes. All the flea markets here usually have one. Either integrated but separate outside or in a building. Not out west?

The one thing that was conspicuous in absence was cigars. They're traditional at NJ fleas.
Forgot about Lugz's hat.
Ahem, that's plural.

Nope. $25. I am aware that complete sets turn decent 3 figures, a fact I mentioned sotto voce to LS, but with only a few original sockets, one extension, and a paint plastered box (I think it may been brushed!), it was not compelling enough. I don't have sufficient motivation to clean it up and complete it, and even knowing I could part out the box and pieces for some profit did not seem worth the trouble to me.

Believe it or not, I AM pretty picky. I leave a lot behind.

I figured that one would raise some eyebrows.

Wow! Jakes hosted GJ royalty today! I have visited Jakes before on travel and have to agree that it is a good one!

I have been out of action for a month or two with family stuff, but did get out today. Dropping by GJ occasionally has been a great inspiration and there have been some amazing finds as always. Anyway my day was not amazing but $1 bought an interesting top to a breast drill with an extra attachment to make it larger. At least that is my interpretation, but I thought someone here has probably seen one before and might be able to offer some information. I have never seen one, and there are no markings.

20211024_123921.jpg20211024_123928.jpg20211024_123940.jpg

I am also posting a little "wooden" box that I picked up some months back for $2. I bought it to carry a few things across the field at a flea market because I forgot to bring a bag. I looked at it recently and realized that it is not really "wooden" but many of the panels are actually cardboard with varnish (I think) applied to give it a bit more stiffness. The fellow who sold it to me said it had an old projector in it at one time, but I didn't realize it's odd construction at the time and did not get any more background. I consider it almost folk art.

Dud, How tall and wide is that box? depending on interior dimensions it might make a great Lantern/Camp box of the type we class as an "Expedition box". Maybe even a lantern and fuel can in the main section adn mantles, funnel, and other things in the compartments.

Dang Lugz, I’d have been all over that.:lol:

Shanny- although a siphon might be handy these days with gas ever on the rise, it’s my AC drain sucker from Grainger. Great tool. It‘s saved my ****.

Provincial- it is a great logo. Took a couple more photos and had it apart earlier.
Pretty nice, solid condition and no damage or repairs. I’m more than thrilled. Bought it from a flea market regular for a very fair price. 5” jaws. Looks newer than I figured. Now to set it up where I want it, will have to rearrange.

Some FMs have farmers attached, many more farmers markets are independent. (one today at the mall parking lot \ 4 blocks from me, only the storm probably blew it out...)

I went back to the Estate from yesterday for 1/2 off day, but all the things I would have gotten were gone. so that was a bust.

3Bay, you can probably get the swivel base for that if you are interested. A guy on the vise thread has or had some new ones, (tying to remember his username...)

Jake’s…There really isn’t a regular farmers market. There are often a couple truckloads of produce or supermarket items, but not that you could buy a week’s groceries; the variety and reliability of consumable goods just isn’t there.
Quakertown has an indoor farmers market (I rarely step inside), and Leesport has both indoor/outdoor farmers market (again, not my haunt, but the outdoor portion is unavoidable if you want to see all the tool vendors.
Allentown Fairgrounds has a substantial, thriving indoor farmers market, but attempts to generate a regular outdoor flea market just before the pandemic sank below my radar.

Picked up some things yesterday which are newer than I generally get excited about.

New Britain AF-10 with AF-10G. Set is for a mid-50s Ford/Lincoln-Mercury Studebaker automatic transmission adjustment. Nothing I'll ever own, so it'll go down the road.
Mac 1" combo wrench, 6 point on the box end
NOS 1967 Combat Infantryman Badge, flippity flip flip
Craftsman -V- 3/8 RHFT
Diamalloy 5" chrome pliers
Bottle brush
Chinese 3/8" dr. rail
Couple 1/4" dr. sockets. Need a 3/16 and 7/32 (and some other small parts) for the SK 1/4" set I bought last week. One of these has B1-79 scratched in the chrome, so couldn't pass it up.

The hat was a solid indicator for Lugz; when I was looking for confirmation, the small caliper on the lanyard removed all doubt :) Glad y'all had a good (and social) day at the flea.

Our local flea doesn't have a farmer market, but it does have a couple vendors with fairly extensive fruit & vegetable stands. Heavy on jalapenos, serranos and tomatillos; I once convinced one of the ladies on a food truck to make me some salsa verde. She must not have appreciated it, as it was so hot I eventually threw it out...that was VERY heavy on the serranos!

My two favorite Bay Area fleas, OCO and Concord, don't really have a farmers market, but I have found so much treasure that I never missed them. I was only remarking on Jakes as that would be the only reason this person would be there.

I must say, changing the topic, that Lugz has cursed me. He goes and makes a comment on my picking prowess for the year, and low and behold, everything dries up. The sales, my skills... The only thing that isn't dry is the weather!

Thursday was zero, even at the Restores (I picked up two ceramic pull chain light fixtures as I am re-lighting the shop.)
Friday looked good on paper but was pretty meh.
51624389125_b033e79e72_c.jpg
The Dunlap mini-slip joint, two vintage operators headsets, and a book (picture will come at the end) at the first stop, the SweatHeart fasteners, and the tube repair kit from the last stop.

51626576269_a13ee56121_c.jpg
The second stop showed some beautiful antique woodworking tools, but someone had been there before me and picked the best ones, although I did find this vintage carpenters chest, which will display woodworking tools quite nicely.
51626149663_a78a2e3c81_c.jpg
There was a guy at the sale who kept trying to pre-sell me what he had found before he had paid for it. And while this isn't per see illegal or unethical, it is not for me. He tries to do this at every sale I see him at. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth, adding to the general days feeling.

The third stop is what was really getting me. There had been a lot of interesting tools in the garage in the ad, but they were so overpriced as to be a joke. Great if they can get the prices, but not for me. For example, there was a '30s Craftsman band say, in pieces that they wanted $300 for. But, on the bench next to it was this:
51624149599_0b7dea3d01_c.jpg
This is the predecessor to the famous Craftsman disc-belt sander, made only in the thirties, and slightly smaller. Well, I didn't see a price on it, asked and she thought the tag had fallen off, so I quickly offered $40. Accepted, and I also picked up this old Remington ammo box:
51625106107_5081578ec2_c.jpg
Well, when I finally got home and everything unloaded, I did find the price tag, taped to the wheel. $15. Real ***** move, jumping the gun on it. Oh, well.

Saturday, I had high expectations for a couple of estate sales south of me, and none of them panned out. The used tool store down that way didn't have much either:
51623750368_8cd76b7795_c.jpg
Starrett adjustable scraper and a North Bros. ratcheting driver.

Other honey holes I know were plumb out of fish, so to speak, but, on the plus side, an old-timer I know who is purging a rather interesting accumulation of antiques and tools is still around, so I was able to pick up the following:
51623531556_bc18dc89a4_c.jpg
Proto puller arms, SK sockets, Wizard socket, Dunlap hex driver, Cornwell DOE, and a miniature submarine. Seems to be made out of pewter and is unmarked to what sub it was, but neat anyway.

I said I would mention books, and on Friday I picked up the Dime Novel from 1874, A Hunters Escape. Also, picked up a 1913 copy of The Boy Mechanic:

Outlaw, the box is 8.5 inches deep, 16 inches wide, and 14.5 inches height.
the right hand opening is about 10.5 inches wide, leaving the smaller sections about 4.5 inches wide.
the height of the small sections is 4", 5" and 3.5" starting at the bottom and going up.
it is surprisingly sturdy given the use of cardboard. The original maker built a wooden frame and "clad" it in cardboard.

bmw, that north bros ratcheting driver is sweet. And I always love the paper items.

Yep good size for an Expedition Box, it might be touch and go for a wide brim 228, a 220 would be easy, and you might fit 2 single mantle lanterns in the larger cavity. (red 200 or its 242 predecessor)

A can of fuel should fit next to a lantern, and you might even fit a SEVA123 brass stove in the 5" cavity?

There was a guy who seemed always to be in the same spot along the highway, week after week. MrsLS would buy this or that vegetable. She says that guy hasn’t been there this year (though she doesn’t go every weekend).
And then there are vendors who show up with seasonal items - one week it’s spring annuals, then potted shrubs, cucumbers, hardy mums, apples, pumpkins. They pop up in different spots around the field. But that’s not a steady supply of food items. There’s no butcher, no dairy, etc.

I am pretty sure that base is off a "breast drill". I would suspect miller falls, but I don't remember which one. It should sell on ebay. One of those drills without the base is almost unusable, though I doubt most get used, but are really nice tools, that were made with a lot of thought.

BTW, I can’t add to or detract from Lugz’s narrative of the GJ regional convocation. A convivial walk around the bases, followed by a trunkside micro-swap-meet. I aimed to leave lighter than I arrived, and nearly succeeded, but for the friendly enabling of Greg and Kris.
After we parted ways, I caved and did a quick retrace to a screw & nut orphaned from an unidentified (Parker?) machinist vise, which I walked away from earlier. The vendor seemed to be packing up, and dropped 20%, so I had to have it.D78EC373-3ACB-446D-A919-F76FB762E1B0.jpeg

Duddly, I agree with you and Toolmiser - that looks like a breast drill part. It differs from ones I’ve seen by having the wider area removeable from the narrower portion that would affix directly to the shaft. I’m to sure what that would accomplish, unless it then could mount into a benchtop adapter and work like a drill press. Or perhaps the narrow part would snug into a shoulder? It’s got to be in somebidy’s catalog.

Good eye! But that's not a caliper. It's the rear sight off of a Mauser 98 rifle that I wear as a crucifix.

Oddly enough, crucifix was my first thought, but then...yeah. And I thought your lanyard was a little short for eyeballing stuff, when most of us are at an age to be checking the length of our arms :) I'd have NEVER guessed what its source was; pretty cool adaptation/use.

LS, nice save on the vise handle/screw and nut.

Hit an estate sale Thu morning while visiting my mom for her 85th birthday. A 6-in Dunlap drawknife and a 1-1/2" Stanley bench chisel. Wondering if anyone knows the model of the Stanley chisel?

Thanks. My other purchases included a couple Stanley-pattern fixed blade utility knives (which on closer examination were both damaged and bad money spent) and a beehive screwdriver that is the smallest I’ve seen. The screwdriver is stamped Mayhew.

I agree. Great for folk art knickknacks of a similar ilk. Nice find!

Thanks. I don't wear glasses, yet, but I do have reading glasses, and I have this loupe in my bag for really fine markings.

20211024_222430.jpg

Speaking of eyeballing stuff, one of the funniest moments of the morning was when a guy tried to buy my flashlight. It was actually Chris's. I forgot mine and the backup in the glove box was kaput. Anyway, I was checking out this vintage display case from an old service station with a glass lift-top and a diagonal board with shelves and two drawers underneath that would've been perfect for displaying tools in. You had to pull the top drawer out to unlock the lid. It was really cool and I was all over it and the seller, who had a mess of old spark plugs in their boxes inside of it and could see the glint in my eye, said, "The case isn't for sale, sorry." Just as the chuckles died down, I noticed a guy was checking out my flashlight. Turning it to and fro etc. "The flashlight isn't for sale," I said. More laughs.

"Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."
That's the general impression. :)
I love my M96, but what I want to know is what happened to the rifle attached to that former sight?
Rifles. Plural. I had a whole box at one time. I think they were stripped for repurposing into civilian models and made their way into surplus streams.
...and a beehive screwdriver that is the smallest I’ve seen.
See, now I can say, 'I was there when he found the world's smallest beehive screwdriver.' :)

Brass knuckles and nunchucks, wow, that brings back memories of elementary and middle school for me. Later on, butterfly knives became the rage.

I had neither, my parents wouldn't allow that in any way. My Mom hated weapons, and my Dad knew I'd only hurt myself (and he'd have been correct)...

Mike
Oh, man... all of this. I only got to play with this kind of stuff at friends houses...

You have to add throwing stars...

I usually think 720 or 750 for most chisels I see. Check dimensions against the catalog.

here is a 440 450 set, they seem to have a flare at the top of the socket.

Thanks RTM!
That sure looks like it. Now i have something to hunt for! ("in the wild" of course.) I could probably come up with the simple one (model 100) but the ratcheting and the convertible handles are are new to me as well.

EDIT to say that I started looking through the catalog and you have sent me down quite the rabbit hole! Browsing the old catalogs may be a between hunts hobby now! I have looked up items many times in old catalogs, but I just started at the beginning this morning and ... wow!

This past Friday I was able to buy out a hardware/hydraulic line making business. He sold Wright Tools and I bought out his NOS inventory including the tool boards and a few other goodies for a steal. Check my thread in the General Tool Discussion.
