OK, now I have done the day's labor, we can get on with the good parts, eh?

So, today in the PNW it is cold and clear at dawn, and while I have chores that need to get done, I don't want to do them in the cold. So, off I go to Craigslist, looking for a good sale or two. Well, one fits the bill, with pictures of tools and a description of a hoarder's nest. Starts at 9, and is around a half-hour away. Anything else? See, I want it to warm up, give my wife her time alone, but not go too far, nor spend a lot of time, as I still have to rake. Well, nothing looks too promising, but there is a sale just north of me that lists tools in the header, but no pictures of them. Well, I will check it out anyway, most to kill time.

I get to the first sale just after the first wave of people has passed, and I find a couple things:
51642274426_705aaaca08_c.jpg
51642939799_47a7419510_c.jpg
An almost complete RAY socket set. Only missing the 1/2 square socket. $20

The boat tools
51642510003_afdd4ddff5_c.jpg
At first, I opened this and just as quickly shut the box. What rusty ****, why would anyone save, let alone buy this junk? But, something had caught my eyes, and I reopened it, only to see a little bit of the good stuff. I bet you saw it too! And, among the junk, I found some good tools, worth the $5 they were asking for it. But, the highlights are here:
51643166860_0cf7559e11_c.jpg
SK 1/4 ratchet, 2 Snap-on clutch driver sockets, a 9/32 socket that appears to be a Snap-on from the '20s, and best of all are two socket couplers, one a 1/4 to 1/4 while the other is 1/4 to 3/8. Not too bad for the price.

I also picked up this postal scale from before WWI, and an Old Timer pocket knife for another fiver.

To be continued...

The second sale was one I didn't have much hope for and was mostly used as a time filler. But, I get there, park, and see an RV garage with some things hanging on the wall, and a six-drawer toolbox on a dresser. I make a beeline to it and was not disappointed. Good stuff, and when I turn around, I realize there are tools everywhere out here, good tools. I pick up an old, homemade machinist chest, put my loot in it, and ask for a price. $25

They couldn't figure out how to open the drawers, and so gave me a ballpark price. It needs a little work, but it is the best homemade box I have seen in a while. Also, I put all the things I had found at first pass in there, like the Firestone ratchet, P&C breaker bar, perfect hand driver, and such. Add to that the 1/2" drive Craftsman socket box, with a leather handle in great shape, and I was very happy with the price.
51643173025_51953f6bd1_c.jpgSo happy, that I had to go back in and double-check for anything I might have missed. And I am glad I did.

51642537133_ba0f339bdc_c.jpg
A wooden drill bit case, beehive screwdriver, very early push driver, Indestro mini-screwdriver, Proto and Craftsman sockets, SK wrench, Walden extension, and a Schrader truck tire pressure gauge! The box is from a set of saw teeth, the replaceable kind found at sawmills. $5 for all of that. It was weird how they didn't post pics of the tools, as they would have gotten a whole lot more people there for them. They even had flats laid out on the ground for people to go through. I wonder if they had meant to, but something got messed up. /shrug. Anyway, I ended up talking to a guy who had been to the first sale just before me, had passed on the RAY set because he couldn't figure out who made it. Nice guy, good talking to. I did forget my cane at the first sale, as I needed both hands to carry stuff. Oh well, I have more, but it did make the second sale pretty tiring.

All in all, a great day, even with too much money spent. I'll make it back though.

Here is my haul from today, most from one stop, 2 items from another, and two not shown in the group foto from a 3rd. Got a bit of a late start, as the guest dog was up a bit late, so we woke slowly, and then fed them, walked, fed us, walked some more, washed the mud off the guest dog, then went to hit a few GS. Our first stop was a favorite junk vendor, has sales about once a month, usually about 75% same old, but about 25% different stuff. This time I got lucky on a few items. He hauls racks of stuff out into the driveway, with old VCRs, tools, tool boxes, portable appliances etc on them, and a few basket type arrangements with a few layers. I looked over the shelves, nothing new and exciting on the shelves or in the boxes, couldn't talk myself into a 5th Sawzall. So wandered over to the basket, a usually good source of smalls. Today did not disappoint. The highlight was on the bottom tier, a Sterilite box full of rules. Jackpot. Before that, I found a box with about 6 or 8 different razor scrapers, all with the blades exposed. I closed those that I could, took one, since it was a different one. The second stop had a bunch of ladies clearing out some goodies, one included some tools from her dad, who was a Manning of Manning Coffee and Manning's Cafeteria fame. Got a bag of binocular accessories like strap and lenscovers, and a really nice conical brush, very soft bristles. She had no idea what it was for, but I was certain I could find a use for it. The 3rd stop yielded the mini crosscut saw, and the wrought iron bracket in the center right of the photo. This was a continuation of an estate sale from last weekend that we skipped, cuz it was just raining too dang hard to drive 8 miles. Fortunately they extended one more day. All the other goodies came from the first stop.

Starting top left and going clockwise. 40W pencil soldering iron, not sure who made it yet. Then 3 Starrett items, a 185 hole gage, and 2 different 6" pocket rules #600 & C305R, Screw Checker, then SK, Atha, Bluepoint Supreme and (HER)BRAND Van-Chrome 411, (yes worn down to just BRAND chisels, butane pencil torch, Warranted Superior tree saw, Stanley level to attach to a framing square, air hammer chisel (exhaust splitter?, small screwdirver with an ornate handle, but no ferrule, a Stanley #30 angle divider, M&W Std Steel Wire Gage in a leatherish sheath, and 2 Sawzall carbide abrasive blades. Then we get into the rules. 1st is a folding meter stick by Eduard Goedel, Leipzig, with inches on the reverse, then a Dremel circle cutter, Lufkin Modular ruler #543, Twix 72" folding ruler RL-113, Lufkin #60 metal ruler, newer Stanley 136-1/2 caliper, buried under it is a 6" 2 section caliper rule #36, and a 12" 4 section caliper rule #36, a Rabone 4 section 36" rule #1166, a Johnson's #46 2 sectionj 6" caliper rule w protractor (1907 patent), and a 4" Starrett hardened rule with #4 marking. The little one is a 4 section Rabone & Sons Birmingham metal 12". Next up is a 3/4-16 tap, a Red Devil Jak-Nife razor scraper, FS Maxon coping saw blades, a bunch of little wrenches, including 2 I think are telecon, 1/2" Witherby chisel, tweezers and forceps, 2x snap ring pliers, KD 472 chain maker breaker tool, Xcelite nippers, Guaranteed Boilable ?dental? mirror, and another nipper, looking like SS, but very rusted.

Quite a pleasing haul for very little money.

PXL_20211030_223553560-XL.jpg

Yeah, it hid at class picture time, but it seems quite special.

I had two sales on my list today, the first one started at 9:00 and the second at 10:00. The first one took 5 minutes and netted two common screwdrivers. I was a half hour early for the second sale which was already wide open. It was my kind of sale, the estate of a street bike hoarder. There were lots of motorcycle guys there so I briefly had the work shed to myself. The man definitely loved his Craftsman tools! I passed on a grey and red top box that needed a bit of work but I helped myself to the contents.

Oh, look, the eponymous RD350, and a nice street track/cafe XS. I wonder if I knew the guy...

Anyhow, Lugz is right about the benches.
I wanted to take a look at the RD350, if only to revisit my youth, but it was gone by the time I arrived. Here are a few more tool pictures.F1DE6343-EEC5-4BBC-8456-E9D2FD8557EC.jpegFCBFE572-5441-406F-B0FC-C0F399F3D876.jpeg568F2E93-37E9-4A63-BEC5-06E1AA21469F.jpegCB4BB618-F38B-495F-87A4-25690F9F1C44.jpeg3ADDC007-8654-4093-BAF4-FE0DB44CD5C4.jpeg5AABE653-BA07-4103-9C52-A51AD5660A76.jpeg

Dang Don, that looks like a buddy of mine’s shop, but his is in a half basement. Don’t think he’s a Yamaha guy either. But he better not be the estate sale giver, I’m expecting to be at an event with him Thursday. But the cluttered, busy shop looks very similar to his.

That's one of those sales I end up going back to on the same day, as it is so much fun going through everything. The sale I hit on Friday was kinda like that, except not many tools, just a lot of vintage hardware.

What a morning I just had!

Forecast called for heavy rain from 4 to 6:30 and sure enough, it poured like crazy. Woke me up at 4 and at 4:30 I got a text notifying me that my 7-innings doubleheader (college fall ball, Monmouth vs Rider) scheduled for 10:30 was cancelled. Now what? The weather was clearing but I only had two $5 bills in cash in my truck. (Is it even worth the trip? It will probably be a mud bath with very few vendors, the little angel on my right shoulder is saying. Just stay home and catch on stuff you need to do.) So down the basement I go to start looking for things to take pictures of for replies to questions on the Bonney and JP Danielson threads. Time gets away from me until I hear Mrs. Lugz rushing around upstairs. I go up to say good morning and make another cup of coffee and I notice the day is now clear and bright. (Dude, it's Collingswood. You KNOW there will be vendors there. C'mon, says the little red devil on my left shoulder. But you better ask the old lady for some more cash before it's too late.) She's an election official and we are in early voting mode, including today, she is running late, and gives me the evil eye on her way out the door, throwing me some ones, and reminding me of my Trick or Treat duties later. So I pick up the ones and grab as many quarters as I can from the change cup to stuff in my pocket and off I go.

An hour later I was home with this haul (2021_69) and an empty pocket!

20211031_092639.jpg

But I owe Dependable Don of Dependable Don's Estate Liquidation Service $2. He was happy to let me take the Alemite grease gun - the last thing I bought - for $3 in quarters he needed for change. Jeepers will recognize it as a WWII 15-oz lever pump Model 6593. They went in a bracket under the hood in late war model jeeps and I grab them and flip them whenever I see one. They're not rare, but they're not common, either. Funny thing is they're always in the same condition, the grease holding down rust and with all the OD paint wore off the handle down to the red primer underneath except around the part closest to the tube. I will post a photo later, but you can see it in this shot.

That cute little self-contained hex drive nut driver set is marked. I just can't make it out yet.

The rivet setters are [VAUGHAN].

And the piece de resistance is that funky looking two-way adjustable, a rare and desirable bird made right here in Newark, NJ by Lowentraut.

IF YOU NO LOOK, YOU NO FIND! :)

Hope you figure out who made the nut driver. Someone showed me one a few weeks back, no clues. Of course, only pix, so I couldn’t dig for the name.

Good day at last Delaware flea market of the season. Scored the CLC tool bag for $10 which included the Crescent Red Handled Dikes. Also the junk needle nose and pruning shears. Just wanted the bag. Will keep the Dikes as a bonus. Found the long reach greenlee 5/16” driver and Klein nut Driver. Klein and Southwire screwdrivers and klein ratcheting wrench were last buy of the season.

Hey, gents! It's been a while since I posted anything on this thread. Mostly due to equal parts poor showings for estate sales with the kind of stuff I like and too little space to move around in my garages because of all the other junk I've brought home over the years. However, as I was exercising the truck after some repairs today, I drove by one of my favorite New England sources of good scores--free stuff at the end of a driveway--and just had to stop!

I picked up four pairs of ice skates, three of which look barely used. Likely, they were the family's experiment with a winter activity in which the kids quickly outgrew the gear and then everyone lost interest. I also scooped up a pair of roller blades and a set of snorkeling gear. All will be donated to my Boy Scout troop's sporting goods sale in two weeks and should bring them $50-$60 bucks at least!

IMG_20211031_132221.jpg

For my troubles, I picked up for myself a full length leather apron for the shop and a collection of stainless steel valves, gauges, fittings and a dryer for compressed air that should do well on eBay.

IMG_20211031_132549.jpg
IMG_20211031_132602.jpg

Anyone know what these are? They were shoved down into one of the skate boot, but they are a mystery to me.

Monthly sale was relatively quite.
Picked a few books, mainly local history for my little collection, tools well these.
20211031_112513.jpg
The top item is a 'thing' no idea what it was made for, but I picked it up thinking it might flare a tube for me.
Gleave & Son Manchester, I initially thought this was a type of corner clamp, but now I'm not so certain, Any one any thoughts?
Chalk holder, useful little item
A Bernards parallel jaw, I have seen you guys post theses a few times, loved the idea but thought I would never find one here..
Grinder tool
And what I initially thought was a side cutter, but it would have had a spring which is unusual to me, and full close leaves the handles very close. No makers name, but it does have a very nice stamp, and says forged steel.

Those are blade covers for the ice scates.
Edit - too late, ha-ha.

Lostboy - I think that does look like a corner clamp. Not for picture frame, maybe, but for constructing a similar joint with a glue block in the inside corner? Just a guess.

What is throwing me with the clamp,
the threads are reversed, so turning it to 'tighten', is actually opening it.
The moving joint contact would be a sharp angle, while the outside edge is shaped, it's like it's designed to open something rather than clamp it.
Regardless, it's likely to be used as a clamp by me

Despite the flea market predilection so admirably espoused by LS and Lugz, I almost never go to S.A's. foremost site, Bussey's. But since Mrs. Radar is out of town, there were no worthy estate sales and I couldn't yet face the task of bathing the dog, I decided to give it a shot.

Bussey's vendors are divided into three types. I call them Day Traders, Regulars and Shop Keepers. The Day Traders sit out in the sun on open tables (brutal in the summer), Regulars set up their wares in booths in the main covered area and the Shop Keepers of course have large permanent "stores". I started with the Day Traders and spent 10 minutes with the only one that had anything that held my interest. He was sitting on his tailgate and had two tables piled deep with a mish-mash of hand tools--heavy on the off-shore produce. I found the Proto L.A. Pebble Flare Nut quickly which encouraged me to dig deeper. Ultimately found the two Starrett No.18AA Automatic Center Punches and the Starrett No.579 Telescoping Gage. I didn't look closely enough at the 579 and failed to see one side is crimped and it's missing the locking knob. Oh, well. $3 for the four pieces.

31 Oct 21-1.jpg

As I was leaving that area, one of the Shop Keepers was bringing out several tubs of hand tools. I spent considerably longer digging through his wares--again, overwhelmingly off shore--and came away with the S-K Tools 13/16 spark plug socket, the Herbrand tappet and the Plomb DOE (19/32 x 1/2) $2 for the three. I have to say, I'm surprised by the thinness of the chromed faces on the tappet--they're peeling. The shank appears to be plain steel and is in great shape.

Then I walked around for an hour looking for more tools (which is the primary reason I don't like flea markets...) I did see a nice Simmonds Boxwood and Brass folding rule, but the Regular's booth was being watched by two guys who couldn't help me while the owner was off on a call of nature. I waited for almost 10 minutes and then gave up. I circled back on my way out only to find him packing up and unwilling to "find" the box it was in--it was visible in the back of his SUV.

So, $5 plus $2 for parking--flipping just one of the Starrett punches will more than quintuple that outlay, so I really can't complain--except about bathing the dog...

Happy Halloween everyone!

No wheels? You're slacking.
Sorry, Lugz. The other reason was that my daughter got married earlier this month, and she commissioned me to make an arch for the ceremony backdrop. It took me a good month just to do that.

We relocated him every evening so as to make folks driving by start to wonder if he's alive...

I'm retiring from the Air Force at the end of the year. Maybe next year I'll have more time to hit some sales.

Sorry, Lugz.
I know you know I was pulling your leg. I got spoiled watching you pull in wheel after wheel, week after week, for that project. It was fun to follow.

That is gorgeous. I'm sure the lovely couple were thrilled. And congrats!
did spend some time turning that hay grapple I posted a few months ago into a Halloween decoration...
That thing look fittingly lethal!

Hit two sales on Friday, and came away with this load:

First sale: 1967 poplin jungle jacket (size Med. Short), MiniMag (with working batteries, for $1, SCORE!...as if I needed another MiniMag), 1960 date code SnapOn 90 waterpump pliers, 2 sizes of USA Vise Grips, Blackhawk 1-1/8" 12pt deep socket, Blackhawk 13/16" 6pt deep socket, pack of AA batteries, MSR 1L fuel bottle, MSR Stow Away Pot w/lid (775ml), 2 carborundum sharpening stones (look like for the GI jet pilot knife), a virgin bottle of Stabil and some coat hangars.

Second sale:
Union parts cabinet, needs a little love with a body hammer and dolly to the top.
GI camp stool for a field desk. These are surprisingly difficult to find, in my experience. Fortunately, I don't have a field desk (er, space hog).
5.5" piece of RR track
2 WW2 vintage condensed books (these were for GIs, I think provided by Uncle Sam)
Aluminum clip board
Quart of apple butter (for a buck? SOLD)
Coleman No. 0 funnel
Channellock No. 440 water pump pliers (this was a whiff - thought they were Champion de Arments....)
Kraeuter 1841-10 button linesman pliers (LOVE the art deco pattern on the grips)
Bonney TR 1
Lock for the Ordinance (sic) Dept USA
2 1972 dates spools of lacing wire
Lufkin No. 73D thread pitch gauge
Couple feeler gauges

that padlock is beautiful! Yale misspelled ORDNANCE on a whole run of those
Thanks! I was very happy to find it with the key attached. I'm amazed by the misspelling. Any idea what vintage it is (I'm guessing sorta Vietnam-ish)? This is my first lock with ordnance markings. Have a couple of brass US locks, but those are probably newer than this lock.

based on the YALE logo on the key I'd say no newer than 1960s

Went to one of my favorite types of sales a few days ago, a bunch of junk stacked everywhere with a few nuggets interspersed. I dug through a lot of non USA stuff initially to find this stuff: Snap on needlenose, SK rat and 1/4” breaker, Mac 3/8 flex, Wright combo, Proto combo, and Craftsman DOE and little goofy screwdriver thing, plus a couple sockets. When I took it up to the guy he said “4 bucks”. I asked him if all the outbuildings were also fair game, and yes they were. Game on!

After a lot of digging and getting more than a bit dirty I came away with this for another 10 bucks. SK rat, screwdriver, socket. Then Snap on,Proto, Wright, Bonney. Not sure what the TOP tool is, have not researched yet. The DBE on the left is Barcalo, 1/4” Snap on impacts, Toyota DOE, Duro DBE. And the brass nozzle:)

Finally a few pieces I grabbed at an estate sale that was already picked over. I think I got lucky on the little Indestro set as it was hiding under some other stuff on the bench. Anyone know what the knife is? No markings on the blade…

Well as most of you know my posts are not near what they used to be here. My new position at work has a huge part to do with that. But, I have weekends off now and still get to the flea and sales when I can. Heres an entire HodgePodge of small but decent hauls from the last several months! ill start it off with a set of 3 Bridgeport Manf (pat 1935) DBE wrenches I found for a dollar each at an Estate sale and just became some of my very favorite wrenches!

I think the TOP tool is a ratcheting spud wrench.

I know you know I was pulling your leg. I got spoiled watching you pull in wheel after wheel, week after week, for that project. It was fun to follow.

That is gorgeous. I'm sure the lovely couple were thrilled. And congrats!
Ah, those wheels. Yeah, I do need to get at least one more. Look closely at the base of the arch. I quartered one of the wagon wheel hoops to make the stands that hold up the arch. Here's a better view:

Sorry for the detour, all--back to the thread!

Lucky dog! Most of us DBE collectors spend months-years trying to get a complete set of Bridgeports and you got em all in one shot! Well done!
