My son is 11, and he is actively searching for his first car. Looking forward to starting a father/son project.

My boy is 6, we already have his car stored in a lock-up until my garage is built. It need s a total restoration so he can cut his teeth on the stuff that won't show when it's finished. Realistically we won't start on it until he's a year or two older.

i have a 6.5hp 200 honda in it. i hand built the front and rear suspension and am using fox float mountain bike shocks. it also has mountain bike disc brakes. the track is actually 2 tracks that i had vulcanized together. it cost as much as a normal track but hey, anything for the boy eh??
i also built the tunnel from scratch. it is from .080" aluminum and i extended the tunnel as you can see with a tip up at the back so it would look like a big sled.
i advanced the timing 6 degrees, shaved the head .060" to bump up compression, and removed the governor. it goes about 28-30 mph and stock is 8. so he is happy.

My son is 12 and just started taking an interest in things other the video games. He helps me all the time with the car. Even if he is just helping wash or wax it's no matter what it is as long as we are spending the time together. We're waiting for the right project to come along. We would have to get some new stuff to start a heavy project....hmmmm Wonder if i can find a kit?

E.rodz, Looks like you and your son are having some great fun together. Will keep an eye on your progress.

tool cool! the kid knows what he wants.. that will definately help when he does his own projects! gotta have some direction

That is freakin' amazing for a nine year old to come up with! Awesome talent! Tell him he's got some fans over here!

here is a little more progress that we hopfully finish the welding on the frame and the grinding. the bad thing about teaching someone this yong is I have to grind all his welds.the way I was tought is you grind all your own welds this teaches you how much faster but he is getting much better.

My three sons ages range from 21 to 25 and when they were the same age as your son there was nothing I could do to get them interested in "garage stuff". It's interesting to note that today two of the three are dedicated gear heads and they often comment regarding how much fun they had working with me in the garage back then.

I'm living vicariously through you and betting the bottom picture in post #51 will be one of your favorites for a long time to come.

anyone ever spoked up a wheel?

got alot done the other night austin finished welding up the rear fork and the rear fender. the only thing that ***** about teaching someone that is ten to weld is I am not about to hand him the grinder so I get to grind all his welds.he is getting alot better though.just curious if anyone has ever spoked up a wheel frome scratch? I figured that because I have never done it we might as well go for broke and ad 18 more spokes and change up the lace up pattern am I just a glutten for punishment or can someone tell me that its a easy job.:headscrat

Man thats BA!

He's going to look back and remember every second of the build. I know I still look back at the projects I did with my dad. Nothing as cool as that, but it sure helped me get a jump start on life...

Cant wait to see it finished

Are you guys doing the pain as well? If so, what paint are you using, and how much is needed?

Once I get my garage painted, I want to paint some metal cabinets that I have. Just looking for some info on the techniques and a good CHEAP gun...

yes me and austin my boy will be doing the paint as well with any luck it will be this weekend. look into a hvlp tripple gun set from northern tool the whole set is like 100 bucks and will work just fine for the most part.you can use rustolem from your local home building center. you can add a enamel hardner in it to make it dry faster and dry with more gloss to it it works awsome.

the way I look at it your kids don't stay young forever and i don't want to be one of those dads that gets older then wishes he spent more time with his kids.watching his ability to absorb all the infromation that I can throw at him is pretty cool.he does give me quite a challenge to keep up with his imagination.I will keep you posted on progress.:bounce:

Get the boy concentrating on making good looking as well as functional welds, better yet, get him a TIG welder so he can make really nice welds.

Besides the fact that it's nearly forbidden to grid welds as a professional(which I am not), I for one am far more impressed by nice looking welds than ground welds. Anyone can make a weld look nice with a grinder.

Welding is one of those skills you can always use, and can almost always find a job in.

well you are going to like the next thing then . I went over the welds with the tig welder and the paint is kandy and all the welds will show.teaching somone to tig weld takes lots of hrs of practice.he will eventuly learn this skill also, but for now its scuffing the powder coat to put the art on.and he will also do some airbrushing later today.:)

When I built my trike I doidn't grind any of the welds except where it was needed to get parts to fit as they should. I bought my TIG speifically for this project, and this project was the first real TG welding I had done.

When the frame was sitting at the powder coaters several shops wanted to leave their number for me to call if I wanted a welding job.

At the couple shows I've had it at i get alot of comments about the welds, "If I could weld like that I wouldn't grind them either".

The welds really aren't all THAT great, but alot better than I see on alot of production stuff.

Amazing stuff !!! While growing up my Dad was so busy busting his *** trying to earn a living doing jobs that could dirrectly linked to ultimately causing his death. I find myself being caught up in that same rut. My daughter turns 6 soon (going on 17!). Its time to re evaluate my priorities I think!!

I think we can all relate to this myself included was busting my **** working all the overtime I could so I could build the coolest cars ever.I sat down thinking and said if I won the lottery what would I do with it? I would build cool stuff with my kids so I decided that after I was in the middle of finishing my garage, working a fulltime job, working on everyone elses projects. when my son asked me if we could build a cool custom chopper out of his bros. bike.I was in the middle of getting my car ready for the power tour.and dropping everything to do this is something I will never regret.I took us to long to finish this to bring the car on the power tour but oh well.
