Estate sale this morning. Guy had tools stored everywhere; boxes, buckets, tin cans,…. Picked this lot up after searching everywhere…. twice! I’m surprised how many guys don’t dig for the the good stuff. Also, open another cheapie socket set box and found a Snap-on extension inside mixed in with the cheapies!

It's a valve lapper. I have a few, including a very small one just like that made by Indestro. The attachment is pinned so you can use one of the four different edges of it for different size valves, as you intuited, but I think that second hole was added b a PO. There was no second hole or second pin. You remove the valve head, put in your abrasive lapping paste, reseat the head, place a pair of tabs on that attachment inside two small notches on the face of the valve head, and turn back and forth rapidly.

EDIT: My Indestro - which had a later, adjustable lapper attachment pinned to it, is posted in the Indestro thread here, but you can see yours in the 1935 catalog excerpt I posted in the same post.

Thanks Lugz!! Mine shows no indication of having been brand-stamped, but in all other aspects is exactly like the Indestro drawing you supplied. But take another look at that drawing and I think you'll see holes depicted on the head and a second hole on the handle. It just seems odd that the second hole on mine is slightly off-center and not perpendicular to the lapping head--although that may explain why there is no Indestro branding--it might be a factory second because of the misalignment. How's that for drawing out conjecture?

Flex-files look useful. Happy to find the 20# coffee can o' random nuts/bolts. They seem to be harder to find around these parts.

I found nothing of note yesterday, well, a bathroom sink for the remodel I am in the middle of, so while I am happy there, I don't think it is pic worthy. Today, though, I hit three sales, all fairly productive

51656321727_fe7134683a_c.jpg
The first sale was a family run affair, and had all the problems with that sort of event. Lots of tools, most not for sale. But, I did pick up a Penens and two Snap-ons, along with a couple repop porcelain Mopar signs. $12

The second stop was a pro run sale, handle by a company I like, sorta. If you need to have everything gone in a couple days, they are the people to call, but, while they are cheap and willing to deal on the first day, they clean and organize before the sale. So you never know how things were kept before, which tells me things get lost in the shuffle. Oh, well. Anyhow, a Fleet socket box with a Long C ratchet, wartime SK, Williams, WF and Craftsman sockets (along with some early Japanese and others), a Herbrand hex key set, Bonney angle wrench, Blackhawk DBE. $5

Third stop was another pro-run sale, and while the pics didn't really show any tools, they were listed. So this was the last sale. Maybe should have started here...

I have no idea what sold before I got there, but I walked past this stack without seeing it! I only spotted it from behind it in the mess of a garage.

It even has the original hand tray! It wasn't free, but it was well below market, so it goes into the flip pile. Seriously, this thing is pretty cherry.

Wow, my paltry find won't make triple in all this! Price was right though - 2 bucks all at a moving sale the Estate was picked over and nothing left I'd want.

Stanley 594 and 593 plastic face hammers, (my second 593, but comparatively big vs the 592 I picked up a week or two ago) a handle, and a 10MM Duralast ratchet wrench. the shank was wrapped in electrical tape so I had no clue as to brand. good enough for one of the road boxes. Seems decent quality?

Took the day off today and hit a few sales the day they opened. No great deals but I liked a few of the pieces I got. I can't seem to stop buying wrenches...

Proto LA 1139 DBE, P&C 2724 combo, 3 Craftsman =V= Metric DBEs, 2 Craftsman SAE DBEs, 2 Bonney combos, Thorsen Speed hed combo, and a Lectrolite or Indestro DBE (forgot to look at inset). Plus the SK box for a 4018 set which is in really nice condition, and a Billings wrench set with holder and an extra Zenel DOE crammed in there. $22 with tax.
IMG_3445.jpg

This sale was pretty picked over by the time I got there but I found another batch of Craftsman =v=, Challenger 1/2 extension, Crescent 777 long needlenose, Defiance vacuum grip knife, Craftsman and General drill gauges, and Plomb 3/8 5249 plus extension. Oh yeah, and the mag strip it's all sitting on. $17.

I’ve found some of the best stuff digging on the bottom shelves, obscure boxes, etc. Like you mentioned, it’s amazing the prime stuff stashed in the misc containers.

I have a feeling major suckage is in order for that crafty stack! Heck of a grab! Nice Mopar porcelain reproduction signs as well

Technically, the coolass Dodge Bros sign is pre-Mopar. :)

One thing that's always confused me about the estate sales you're visiting, Beemer. Why hire a professional company if they're going to sell things for flea mark prices? After they take their cut, they're left with peanuts.

Very cool find. Please post in Billings thread.

Must have been an impressive spear
I'm in Philly for the weekend. 'Bout ready to make an excursion through the transveldt of Lancaster county to track 3jakes down if we don't get an answer pretty soon! :)

Very true Lugz! I didn’t know if anyone would pick up on that common misconception 😁. Well done sir!

I got near noting planned for today, Not clear why. It's not supposed to get real rain till Monday...

On the topic of silly songs from childhood, the one that always stuck in my brain was "Dr. Ironbeard" I was looking up the lyrics to show my kids who had never heard it, and it has an interesting history. It is based on a very old German collage student's drinking song! totally nonsensical in both cases!

I have entirely too much on my plate today (and even more tomorrow), but I did think of you guys when I passed a "Giant 3-Family Yard Sale" (that's what the sign said) earlier today. Looked like mostly furniture and housewares. A LOT of furniture...

This was at a house that does these fairly frequently (the sign was definitely old), so I'm wondering if they're cleanout folks. They had several small containers in the back yard.

Because what I really need was three more vices.
Nice sized leg vice, this is what I was after, 4 inch jaws.

Nice picks, guys!
I headed out solo this morning, pre-dawn.
First stop: Jake’s flea. Very quiet there, Saturday being the LesserDay. Best purchase was a pair of camo bellows-pocket hunting pants. Did not spot either vendor I was hoping to, so somewhat light in other pickups.
E75CA916-731F-4687-82E4-5B7DE0A261D0.jpegSecond stop: Fensty’s flea (indoor). I usually don’t bother, but I did pick up an Estwing finish hammer, VacuumGrip spreaders and a Whale grips.
B4685B04-74D2-474E-9008-52608C17810C.jpegThird stop: Quakertown flea. This was better-attended than Jake’s today. I had two intriguing vise experiences, but ultimately passed on a Howard Iron Works Buff NY (late 19th cent) stationary vise, which STRONGLY resembled Parker vises of the period, and a slightly younger Parker 4” carriage-maker or filer vise with no-longer-swiveling rear jaw. The rust-frozen rear pin is what caught my eye, but by the time the vendor closed the distance between us, I was crestfallen to see the rear jaw had been very well welded along both sides. I suppose it would be possible to undo it, but given the struggles I’ve read of those trying to loosen a merely-rusted swivel jaw, I figured I’d never really get it loose without breaking it (and possibly, it’s already broken behind the weld). The vendor was perplexed that I wouldn’t counteroffer even after he suggested 10% off his asking price, and insisted it was still good as a regular vise. I suppose so, but I was just not going to do it.
But finding a Bonney rim hammer cheered me considerably. I’ve picked up quite a few over the past few years, hoping to see that name, and been disappointed each time. Also a replacement claw hammer handle, PROP BETH STEEL - cool!
Last stop: Weil Antiques Ctr parking lot flea. Too cheap to buy a 1947-48 AAA PA service station directory for $2. If there had been illustrations, it would have been irresistable.

Good stop today at an indoor flea in Marion, OH. Picked up a Carlyle #2 Phillips, SK stubby flat, Sk 5/16” socket, SK 7/16” deep socket, a Stanley tack puller, and this cool flexible socket rail. $6 total.

We went to a few sales today. The first was in Richmond, CA close to El Sobrante. Found several tools and an early carry box.

Met up with Smoke for a flea market/vintage fair. Not too much that we were looking for, but lots of stuff to look at.
51659952771_0ae81bb3a8_c.jpg
I picked up a Truth breaker bar, Fleet socket box, Plomb pliers, and a Stanley sweetheart Hurwood driver. The Proto rat and Stanley level were found in an antique shop I stopped at on the way home.

They sit on a case that was given to me by member Jabberwocky and passed on by Smokeshow.

My haul for today. From 1 of 3 garage sales within a reasonable driving distance. Advertised construction tools and scaffolding. I got there about 20 minutes after opening time, and the only tools left was a lineup of 4 pliers, and 3 clamps, with 2 missing their jaws. Recognized two of them by shaped,, decided to grab all four after a quick inspection. Left - Right, A Gripso by Bashord of SF, a Crescent Bent nose, Hapewe from Germany, and a PlieRench with 7 extra jaws, and a pouch. Picked up the pouch, felt something rattle, figured it was a ways up from any of my others.

The Gripso is different than Lugz' in this thread, expecting some research is in order. My Pix will be added there shortly.

Have not dug into the PlieRench thread to see if that is an oddball too, or what exactly all the jaws do.

PXL_20211106_173323959-XL.jpg

Also picked up a few metal mesh drawer organizers from one of the other ones, but those are boring, even tho they are going into the garage

Wow, RTM if the PlieRench is as nice as the case, you have a pristine copy there! I've yet to see, a case in any condition, and only have 1 extra jaw, and that's with 3 pair.

Hey Beemer, was the swap that you and Smokeshow went to the one at the Clark County Fairgrounds? Wanted to drive down to that but had kid duty this weekend.

I don’t know. I ended up “liking” a bunch of stuff that I like from the last few pages. Is it obnoxious? I feel lazy to not give a shout out when someone posts their good deal, or some cool find.
That said, I clicked the like button. Beemer still gets a You **** for the $5 vintage Blackhawk set! (y)
Nice finds gentlemen.

Three stops today. Found a cool Cheney hammer at a community rummage sale. Didn’t know about the sale but my wife called and told me. I left with the hammer for $2. It has a neat nail holder in the head that utilizes two ball bearings. Never seen one. Not hard to find it seems, but a new one to me.

Took a nice ride with my mother today and stopped in Arcadia to look in some antique shops. Big surprise, a massive motorcycle festival on the strip. 100’s of bikers, 100’s of bikes, bike show going on. Mom was happy as could be, she‘s liked bikers since way back, lol. It was cool to see one bike shooting flames. Me, I was just happy to look in the open shops. Many shops were closed during the festival.

I was thrilled to find a couple key ring screwdrivers in a shop. One Stanley, and another which was flipped over when I saw it. Thought it might be Plomb or Proto but wasn’t. Could be fun to play the guessing game on this but that could take forever so I’ll save the mystery.

Along the way to lunch we spotted a roadside stand. Found a 1/4”Britool socket and a 1/4” Craftman 8point.

Nice day over all.

If you caught my creepy update on one of my old 20 questions threads down on the Vintage board here, you saw I was out of action this weekend, visiting #4 for a college parents thing. But I spotted this LEFT-BEHIND, of sorts. It's an antique stand for an antique Hammond typewriter and completely irrelevant to the museum it was in. But someone with great sense and taste thought to use it as a little table in the bookshop.

Hit an estate sale on Friday, and went back on Saturday. Prices in the house were....not encouraging. The garage held some deals, though the $165 lawnmower wasn't one of them. It had no gas, so I couldn't check if it ran. I'm somewhat in the market for one, but not at that price. I'm done crying in my bee....coffee.

Pics, virtually all newer than I prefer:
Duro 25/32 combo
1/2 dr. Craftsman deeps
3/4
7/8
15/16
1
1-1/16
3/4 dr. Craftsman 1-5/16
3/4 dr. SK 1-7/16
Craftsman box/carry tray (needs a LITTLE love with a dolly and some fingernail polish remover)
7" Vise grips
8" CM (I) vise grips (Parker, 1985-86)
8" Johnson cant saw file
10" mill ******* R. HOE & CO flat file
12" half-round Simonds red tail
12" mill ******* Black Diamond
T-50 staple gun/staples
Flannel rags/cloths
Consumables - shop vac filters, 550 cord, Grease Lightning degreaser, Home Depot bucket, 1 gal mineral spirits, Krylon yellow paint

The yellow spray paint was a happy discovery, as I've been looking for some, for a project. Not sure it's the yellow I really want, but it's at least not black or white. Local Wally-World is sold out of everything except those two, and TSC is a 30 min. drive.
