I went to a swap meet at Thompson Speedway last weekend. There were a handful of ornery/drunk folks, but plenty of nice sellers and many deals to be had. Highlights included a $1 Buck knife (not pictured), a "Bell System C" angle flashlight from pre-1963 (more in the Bell System thread), and my favorite find, a Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 3000-1 9-band transistor radio from late 1965.

20211112_215930.jpg

The radio was quite dirty but working. I've spent the last week cleaning and doing some basic electronic restoration. I do have the fold-down front lid with map and logbook, but it is in rough shape and I am still deciding on the best plan of attack. The set has excellent reception with clean, room-filling sound. The telescoping FM antenna fits in the carry handle, which is pretty cool.

Here's the weekend finds for me. First sale I got to very early because I didn't pay attention to the ad, decided to leave but didn't try to sign up. Big mistake, came back an hour later and #35 on the list. Took me over 1/2 hour to get in. Tools were scarce and because of that I don't think anyone decided to dig much. I found this stuff mixed in with a bunch of Taiwan sockets. Ugliest little Snap on rat ever (3/8" in a 1/4" frame), some old ratchet that has no brand but reminds me of Duro/Indestro, and a nozzle. Caliper is from another sale. $8 bucks.

IMG_3467.jpg

After that disaster I went south, first stop was a good sale, lots of older Craftsman stuff in original packaging. But the prices were pretty steep. I saw a grinder I wanted and hoped it would be there the next day. Here's the haul, it was expensive, $36ish if I remember correctly. Big 40170 and the mint 1/4 deep SK Wayne sockets were the majority of the spend. Bought the Proto wiggler just for the box, PO wrote all over the tool. The little ratcheting wrench is VlChek, the stuff in the pouch is Starrett, and I have no idea what the tool above that is. Will have to look into it.

IMG_3466.jpg

Last sale of that day turned out to be a good one. Tools hadn't been picked through too much and the price was right. $8.50 or so for this batch: Bunch of metric 1/4" Craftsman USA up top, some BE stuff below that, P&C adjustable on the left next to an old 1/4 hex set that's unmarked. Proto LA ignition wrench, Plomb DBE, followed by Cornwell, Barcalo, and VlChek. The little ratchet looks Plomb/Protoish to me but is unmarked unfortunately. Have never found a Plomb 1/4" ratchet in the wild! Wobbler I can't remember at the moment, little gauge tool is Starrett, and the screwdriver is a Bonney.

IMG_3468.jpg

Today I went back to the sale with all the Craftsman stuff for 1/2 off day. I was a bit worried as it was packed with people but they all were fighting over the Matchbox cars and coins. I grabbed a NOS block grinder and a few other bits. $37 I think. I grabbed the measure and circle cutter because of the paperwork and the packaging on the cutter. As usual I can't stop buying punches and little wrenches, also liked the Stanley caliper.

IMG_3465.jpg

Here's the grinder:

saukit, that odd Richmont wrench in your second photo is a torque wrench. It may be a fixed-torque model, so lack of adjusting scale would indicate that and mean it was for a dedicated purpose. Look for Boeing markings.

Nice picks! Sounds like an entertaining weekend!

It's all Outlaw's fault. Soon they will be as popular as Hummels.

What Jock said. The markings will indicate the preset in inch-pounds. I have a small collection and there's a Richmont thread down on the vintage board. Richmont is the old California company that merged with Sturtevant in the 70s.

Saukit, that nozzle looks to be marked Companion? I think that is an old Sears branding. Not sure though. The "ugly" Snap-on ratchet is one of the handiest tools. I have a Cornwell version that I use almost daily, and an Armstrong backup. Try it, you will probably like it!

You defiantly get the coveted "You ****" for those two, but the pre-block as-new-in-box?

This is in the running for the score of the year!

Thanks Provincial! It's got a bunch of writing on it, I just need to clean it off some and I'll post on the VB.

@saukit gest the **** of the Month (maybe longer) from me for that NIB Sears grinder!!!

Mike
Thanks Mike!

I have to keep myself from buying more nozzles, the addiction is real:ROFLMAO: Thanks for the heads up on the torque wrench!

I believe the nozzle is Champion but I will double check. I hear you on the rat, it seems really handy it just looks so goofy with that giant anvil on it!

I'll post more "unboxing" photos of the grinder when I get a chance. I went back and forth over whether to open it up but ultimately it's going to a buddy who will use it for it's intended purpose. "It's a tool not a jewel" I tell myself...

The most amazing parts are the price and that it lasted until the second day! You earned a You ****, but I almost want to take a little back for you not snapping it up the first day. I'm ashamed to admit I recently hesitated on a pristine vintage Remline stack--including the mid-box and lost out. I'll be kicking myself for years.

I don't even know you, but feel like I need to kick you too, lol...

I'm still kicking myself for letting some of my Grandfather's stuff go, especially his golf clubs and some SK sockets (in my defense, I didn't realize the sockets had value, and was under the gun to empty the basement).

This is a totally fair point and one that's not lost on me. So in order to assuage the tool gods I'm gifting this grinder to the friend that told me in no uncertain terms what a dumb*** I was to leave it behind on the first day. I don't really deserve it :ROFLMAO:

Picked up this Wilton C1 tonight along with a Baldor 502, brown Brock-Meyer bench grinder, and a 7” Jaw width mill/machinist vise.

I got the Wilton from the first seller for $120, and the two grinders and mill vise for $15! Total of $135.

The guy with the grinders and mill vise just wanted to clear up his backyard so I was happy to take them off his hands. The mill vise ended up being way bigger than I thought, probably weighs about 100-120lbs. Does anyone know how to find out the maker for it?

Catcher, you definitely **** for those grinders. The mill vise is probably scrap. Anyone with a milling machine that big is not going to be interested in a used vise.

Saturday morning garage sales netted me this lot. The puller is a Blue Point and I looked through a dozen boxes/buckets but couldn’t find that one missing arm! All the 1/4dr, 3/8dr and 1/2dr Craftsman sockets are metric and made in USA. The three 3/4dr ones are SAE but two directly cross to metric sizes. The 1/2dr set is a full set of metrics. The scale is a Starrett. The Snap-on Rethreader set is in great shape but missing one rethreader tap. No name on the strap filter wrench but marked made in USA.

So last week I went to an Estate Sale that didn't promise too many tools--but what they had was scattered all over the garage...
In one bin I found two Indestro metric DOEs, not Select Steel--not very interesting. In a carry tray I found another and tossed it in the bin with the other two. After a while, I found the Klip-Tite clip all by itself and decided to see if I could complete the set. Another 15 minutes of rooting around and I had them all. In the 1970ish Indestro Tool Catalog 55-M there is a description (no image) that has all these wrenches with the appropriate serial numbers and is listed as No. 941-6MM, which is the number on the back of the Klip. Of interesting note, the sticker on the Klip says Metric Sizes, but then continues in smaller print: Not for SAE or Whitworth.

13 Nov 21-1.jpg 13 Nov 21-1b.jpg 13 Nov 21-1a.jpg 13 Nov 21-1c.jpg

The 6" adjustable is made in West Germany and is stamped W. H.-B. The only reference I could find for this logo is from a Worthpoint post for an eggbeater drill citing WHB as W. Hahn Breman. I haven't been able to dig up anything on that firm.

13 Nov 21-1g.jpg 13 Nov 21-1h.jpg

The Indestro set was $5, the adjustable $1 and they threw the 1958 © Snoopy brass key fob in for 50 cents. ( There's one just like it on ebay and the guy wants $59!)

Found some nice smalls the last 2 weeks .
Old wood level and a Made in Sweden Eskilstuna level.
Couple of tins, little cutter, couple of tapes, an RFD lock and an Amber (?) handle screwdriver. Also two oil cans, a Snap On R-714 ratchet with a socket booger welded to it, small square and a old Jorge clamp.
Last week I grabbed some more tapes, an old cloth tape (Lufkin?) and an old string line, small radio wrench and an old schrader valve tin.

Anyone have any data on the screwdriver ?

Saulit, the shine off the grinder almost blinded me... !

The screwdriver is a Champion, possibly also branded Winchester. I’m not sure what is on the handle? Is it a woodie wearing a rubber?

Hey Rickster,
I've not seen that puller before. I see it is stamped Chicago.
Any model numbers? Could it be pre-Snap-on?
Good on the Craftsman stuff as well.
The Ebay Craftsman craze is continuing, albeit a little more selective I think.

LesserSon, I have a screwdriver with a similar 2 piece furrel to the champion you show. Wooden handle without the covering though.
What is the purpose of the tongue and groove furrel on them? I thought perhaps the shank would be exchangeable but it's not.
Seems like an overcomplicated piece with no purpose. Any ideas?

Picked up some stuff yesterday. Everything but the sharpening accessories will be moved on down the road. I didn't plan on buying the mortiser or the Leigh D4 but I threw out low ball offers after telling him I wasn't interested and he decided to go with cash in hand. Delta mortiser came with 3 Delta chisels and 2 other chisels which I haven't looked at yet. The Leigh D4 dovetail jig has the Isoloc and Finger joint attachments plus all manuals and some extra fingers. This is the first Dunlap vise I've come across. A 3-1/2" No. 5244. Anyone know when Sears sold these? The seller was at least my age (old) and said the vise which was attached to an old plywood workbench was his father's. Oh, he also gave me two boxes of sandpaper pads & belts. The pressure pads are almost all old Makita. Almost half the belts are 3M. The belts will come in handy to lap old woodworking tools such as planes and chisels. Not sure if the pads are still worth trying to use. We'll see.

Nice stones (can we say that without someone taking it the wrong way. I hope not.)

Only problem with old belts is sometimes the abrasive becomes unglued, like some of us. I bought a 50' roll of Blue Zirconia 50 grit once, great for levelling cruddy planes.

Yeah, just like the adhesive on 8 track tapes....
A bit more exciting though.

Supposedly you can clean and re-glue the belts with contact cement on the belt, and old school filament tape - I have yet to try this, but I have a bunch of strip belts the glue let go on...

Here’s the patent. You can read the full text by following the link. Wood and steel don’t marry well, so novel ways to get them together is a pretty rich field for inventors.

DATAMP comment compares it to this earlier patent, in which the inventor is a little more direct in describing the purpose is to increase strength, so it holds up better to being beaten on like a chisel.

Hit a neighborhood estate sale this morning. Two metal casters, a full box of T&G cedar closet liners and a Garcia Mitchell 308 spinning reel. I was most excited to find the spinning reel. I've heard good things about these old reels. Need to give it a good cleaning.

Edit: Does anyone know how to date these Mitchell 308 reels? It appears there used to be a site to date them but they've gone away.

I plan on cutting those belts anyway to lay flat on a marble surface plate I've got. So if the adhesive gives way no problem.

One of the items that interested me in today's estate sale was this carpenter's toolbox. I thought it had been repainted but after looking under the lid for the S-K badge I was shocked to see it was a Waterloo box. I'm now thinking they probably made boxes for S-K. I assume some of you have seen these before. Does anyone know if Waterloo OEM'd for S-K? I paid $20 for the very nice S-K carpenter's box I picked up some weeks back so I balked at the $30 the same estate sale company was asking for this box.

I hit one estate sale, one thrift store, and two Restores, with pretty good results:
51690217234_79e0620bd5_c.jpg
From the ES, the Craftsman spinner, the sockets, and a very nice leather rifle case (shown below), the first Restore yielded the three socket boxes (two SK and a Plomb) along with a Dunlap push drill.
51690541255_0929366170_c.jpg

The second Resore gave up the Snap-on nut driver and a book on clock repair:
51689747281_65709a14ea_c.jpg
While the Conrad book (an autobiography of his sea years and life) and this came from the thrift store:
51689649416_3cb56437a8_c.jpg
a well-worn, quarter-sawn oak tabouret. It will be a project, but it has already met with the wife's approval. I think, but am not sure that it is a Stickley design. More research is needed.
