So, Vinnie the Pooh.
O, molesti, I am glad you weren't the editor! Lenard made a crucial exception in his translation, because that sounds like something Joe Pesci would have starred in the screen version of!

I made a big boo-boo identifying that buggy wrench as a buggy wrench, guys. Teaser photo attached, link here...

The book is quite famous among bibliophiles, 'Cuda. The author was teaching English in Sao Paolo, Brazil when he wrote it, inspired by an earlier posting where he tutored a young turk in Latin with the original A.A. Milne. The first dozen copies were self-published as a lark in 1958, but the privately distributed copies soon reached a shrewd desk at Dutton in 1960, who recognized the entertaining potential. It was actually the first foreign language book to ever reach the New York Times Bestsellers list.
That’s what I love about this site. The knowledge base is amazing!!

I found a listing late this morning for an estate sale in San Pablo, CA. It didn’t look promising on arrival but there were interesting tools stashed in several locations. Here is what we came home with.

Don,
What’s your method? Your tools always come out great. I’ve used the brand metal rescue and have not been happy with the results. Tools come out rust free but black.

My plain steel tools often come out of the evaporust with a black coating. I remove it with a toothbrush style wire brush and fine steel wool. On the parts I want to shine like new I use a 3M wheel that I learned about on this site. However, I am very careful on any cad plated tools. There is a ton of information in this thread.

A few finds from the other day. A little Dunlap pouch that I assume is for hex wrenches, a couple of small no name planes that I'll clean up, a brass Y for my sprinkler project:). Pliers are Snap on vacuum grip, screwdriver is Plomb, P&C spinner and 2814 DOE, and VlChek tappet wrench. 10 bucks.

Don What grit is your 3M radial bristle brush wheel?

Mine is 220 and it is a good compromise. If I had unlimited space and grinders, I would buy another finer grit to go along with the 220.

FWIW, I have been using Metal Rescue (HD) and Evaporust (TSC) interchangeably for a few years now, whichever is cheaper when I need it, and I have noticed no difference. And if you're making that assessment based solely on the residue, they both produce it, especially on tools with high carbon steel content, and, as Don said, it is easily removed with a penetrating oil of your choice and a soft abrasive.

No problem. The black residue is unfortunate - and annoyingly messy! I go through a lot of WD40, latex gloves, and rags cleaning the tools AND the tools cleaning area. But it's worth it for how quick and relentlessly it strips rust without the hassle and potential hazard (in my opinion!) of tending to an e-tank.

Friday morning I got a chance to hit some estate sales. The first two were duds, and I found a few items at the last one to bring home:

Two 6" 3-corner files of indeterminate origin
Unmarked 1/4" spinner
Proto 9680 #0 Phillips marked "TEK 97077" which I believe is Tektronics
Powr-Kraft 84H4870 1/2 dr. impact socket 1/2"
New 1/4" drill bit
Black Oxide tommy bar 5/16 diameter and 7-1/2" long

The Aircraft Tool Inc. countersink is used to countersink aircraft aluminum sheet skins so flat head rivets can be driven flush with the surface of the skin. This is to make the surface of the finished part smooth to reduce drag (wind resistance) so the airplane can go faster (and otherwise perform better) with the same power. Only fairly thick skins are countersunk, since the entire countersunk area must be in the outer skin in order to get adequate strength in the rivetted joint.

The micrometer adjustment is used to allow fine adjustments in the depth of the cut. You set the tool to cut a little shallow, then insert the rivet by hand and measure how far it protrudes above the skin. Using the micrometer adjustment, you reset the depth in increments until the rivet is flush with the skin.

I have lost all control. An excessive amount of overtime and commissions have allowed me to get a little junk drunk. In my endeavor to build my wartime “E” dated Snap on midget set I went to the auction site and ponied up for this GM70M ratchet and TM60E 6” extension. Both from separate sellers. Hey, buy it when you see it, right?
I also bought a couple other pieces for the set that are en route. Pics to follow when I get them.

I also bought another Snappy item about an hour ago to fill an empty spot in a set. Again, pics to follow when I get it.

In my blur of a life, I’ve neglected to show some finds I’ve come across in the past few weeks. I’m particularly proud of this Cornwell 1/2” drive beast. I got this from a little estate haul. I’ve already torn it down and serviced it and put it in my box. Hope you dig it.

I bought a bunch of wrenches off eBay the other day (only wanted the 4 or 5 Plombs in a lot of 60+), got in a minor bidding war, and paid way too much for them. My reasoning was pretty much the same, had worked a bunch of OT so might as well spend it, right? So at least you're not alone!

That’s how i put mine together a few years ago, one piece at a tIme. I had a real difficult time finding the short extension until Snapmom helped me out.

Haha! Were the posters sill inside Lugz? I'd have picked that up at the right price.

the local Flea opened today, not many vendors, - maybe a dozen or so? Got the mandolin (Too thick for a mando - I need to do some research...) and hooks there the film canister was free at the only yard sale.

Heck yeah! Check out the shirt. I'm thinking it must have been some kind of ultra conservative group. The editors had a funny sense of the plural though. Davy Jones is printed on the flip side!

I will make an exception to my policy. $3! The crudest of House liquidators just looking to move stuff and all paper was priced the same. I've always been more of a CREEM kind of guy, to be honest, but I do have a rather cheeky Letter to the Editor publising credit in a 1984 Rolling Stone, which is where most of the staff of The TeenSet ended up, per Wiki. Apparently, it was rather groundbreaking, and I can see why. Published by Capitol Records beginning in 1965, it started moving well beyond the fan mag format by 1967. This issue has an interview with the Beatles that borders on art/gonzo journalism, and an oft-cited memoriam to Brian Epstein. The mag was known for promoting mainly the Beatles (one of the writers became famously rich much later with memorabilia auctions) and Buffalo Springfield. This issue features a huge skating rink party with bands I have NEVER HEARD OF (and I am one of those annoying audiophiles who prides himself on knowing all the obscura... ) including a photo of Neil Young on ice skates holding a Christmas tuxedo teddy bear!

That's Awesome Lugz! Your meter/prize from being poster of the year should be off scale!

I'm the annoying guy that is always asking "who is that? as, unless I own it, I CRS for names...

I made little headway so far on the ID of the mandolin, other than its obviously in the mandolin family, but its unusual for having a round hole, and most are 2" thick, and this one is 3" It has nice tone from what I can get out of the 5 strings renaming, but I knew that before paying the $35 I beat the guy down to. I may need to hit a mandolin forum and see if they can help ID it closer. No makers marks anywhere inside or out...

I figured Stamp out the Beatles was backlash against John's "bigger than Jesus " statement. It wasn't:

It was a slow day for sales on Craigslist. I picked out three. The first one was close to home but i only found three worthwhile tools. The Nicholson hacksaw looked heavy duty. The Channellocks were newer than I prefer as was the Proto adjustable that I hope will clean up.

The second sale in Pleasanton was a bust but we got to visit the kids and grandkids in Livermore. We found a Livermore sale and grabbed a Makita palm sander in a DeWalt bagD32CD41E-49C3-42C9-8A63-4850AD91E994.jpeg The final sale in San Ramon was put on by a self described “junk man“ and was more to my liking. The big Bell System/Klein and Sons wrench was unusual. The original Perfect Handle screwdriver was cool as were the Sears and Wards wood chisels. I’m not sure who made the “Made in USA” screwdriver.5CA1A948-1705-4622-BA9F-C3F80C9AE5AF.jpegA8E6ED85-535F-4814-B77A-B6F9B36A7992.jpeg99FB3FA3-E59E-4DAA-BC2D-D26148C1C190.jpegE8A51161-D5A0-412D-90CD-8D224A993F13.jpeg782C44D4-0328-4B0F-B976-9F8DF7E3DD74.jpeg806F8290-3884-4BFA-A93C-9422ED294E12.jpeg

My picks from the day,
Type 10 bailey no. 5. Might not be in the best of conditions ;-)
Record clamp, Stanley blade and chip breaker 1'9/16 width [of it's not metric I don't comprehend these dimensions, but re measuring it's 1 3/4 which means it should fit a Stanley no. 3], didn't fit anything I own, not researched what it came from yet. Rivet set 3/16, glazing iron (not sure why I picked this) cabinet scraper, partial makers name needs another proper look, and two small toolmakers clamps, could see these were made in England, but not much else. Can now see they were made for RS and are quite modern. But I'm fine with that. Over all nothing to get too excited about, know the bailey might interest some.

There was only one Estate sale on Black Friday that had any tools and I only picked up these two things. Worth it, though...

Columbian Hardware Co. Leg Vise and a Coleman No. 530 A46 Pocket Stove.

The leg vise is 39lbs, 39" top to bottom, has 5" jaws and opens comfortably to 4.5". Overall in great shape. Spring is strong and jaws look very lightly used. Just needs a clean-up and lube. $20

26 Nov 21-1.jpg

26 Nov 21-1a.jpg 26 Nov 21-1c.jpg 26 Nov 21-1b.jpg

The stove has its fuel funnel, but is missing the wrench/handle and the steel flame diffuser. I decided to take the "patina" off the stove's aluminum case/pots. Looks much better. Since the tank was full, I decided to give it a test. Not being that familiar with camp stoves--my scouting days are long gone and the adults usually took care of the gas powered implements--I didn't want to pump it up any more than it might have been, so I just put on some goggles, opened the valve as directed and lit it. It produced a medium yellow flame with sooty smoke until I opened the valve all the way. Then it got going with mostly a clear flame with a little blue down at the bottom. I attributed this to old gas but now I think it might have been because I didn't pressurize it properly. After the test, I emptied the tank and got almost two cups. The yellowish color has thrown me. It doesn't smell like gasoline--either old or fresh--but I thought white gas was clear. It certainly evaporates quickly--about a third of a cup is gone in under 24 hours.

Overall it's in great shape. The leather cup in the pump looks good and nothing seems out of alignment. The fuel tank cap is painted green, so I suspect it is a replacement from a newer Coleman product. All in all, I was happy to pay the asking price of $10.

Looking forward to Outlaw's assessment and advice!

Almost certainly that is not White Gas but ancient (Leaded?) pump gas. (Same thine in the early 40's and before - it was during the war for high altitude fighters that leaded gas came to being) best to eliminate it

Those tend to be "wide open" or off kind of stoves, and light ups can get entertaining, so best done outside... Simmering is difficult without the plate.

ps: incredible condition!

Not going to mention how much I had to pay for the one I recently picked up! But you could have bought several more of yours!
Very nice vice
