Saw the local ad in my paper today. That raised my eyebrow a bit, I have to admit!

I'll have to pass by my local store to check it out.

^^ Dude, why even bother being a ****? All I use is snap-on, but I dont bash on people using Kobalt, or Craftsman, or Husky for that matter... They are all good tools, and while they aren't up to the quality of truck brands, they are of better quality than most home users will ever need...

Bought two of the 40 piece ratchet sets: one to throw in the car, one from my son. He's only 12, but I've been building up a decent starter set of tools to give him when he begins to show interest (or moves out of the house).

That's just it they are not "good tools". I just bought their 24 piece 3/8" drive set the other day when they were dirt cheap and honestly I would rather have a set from Harbor Freight because it would be better quality than the Kobalt.

The problem I have is that there's a United States flag flying over the parking lot, yet the front door says "Entrada" instead of Enter.

I have BIG problem with that.

Agreed. I also get a kick out of the multi language signs around the service counter. I mean, do we really have to have Russian directions on how to return a product?

Oh well, tis the land of opportunity and marketing.

Really?? I haven't been in my local store in over a year. The last time I was there all I saw was signs in Spanish. Oh well, in teh almost 3 years the store has been there I have not spent a single dime there and I will not until the front door says "ENTER".
Yes, I have a hard-on for Lowes on this, and I have told them several times.

It doesn't bother me about your situation with Lowe's... it's just that i really don't remember coming across such anger in the 15yrs i lived in Iowa.

It's been said...but again the wrenches and the socket set are MADE IN USA. The wrenches are more of a pebble-cast than smooth finish, but that's a great price on USA wrenches.

I see no problem with Kobalt tools, especially the USA ones. Thanks for the tip OP!

Would you rather the person making your coffee didn't wash because it was in a language they could not read?

I agree on a lot of stuff (entrances etc.), but if the message is important, make it legible to as many as possible. Besides, a lot of people who learn to SPEAK English later in life, have a hard time READING English. Especially if they learned strictly by listening and talking.

And to comment on the issue at hand, a Kobalt set could be just the ticket for throwing in the back of the car for a "just in case" or more likely a "damn I forgot my good tools"

There are thousands of members here, and information like this is bound to be interesting to enough people to make it worthwhile posting. "Illegitimus non Carborundum" Johnnie... "don't let the bastards grind you down." :D

Not to make this a thread on polical correctness but if I owned a coffee shop (or pantry or gas station) and I hired a non-english speaking person to serve coffee, I would make certain they would perform basic sanitary (or coffee making) procedures with or without a sign in their lanquage.

Heck, I doudt that everyone washes their hands before returning to work reguardless if there is a sign they can read or not. Have you seen some of those Walmart employees?????

Thanks for the info. I don't need any of the ones listed at this time, but I like to keep up with sales info.

Re Kobalt US made tools, I have a 3/8 Koblat ratchet which I like a little better than the standard Craftsman.

It is the same exact ratchet with a different formed handle. You can take a craftsman rebuild kit and put it in a kobalt.

Great post.

Nothing wrong with Kobalt. I have them in my trail box for tools I don't really care about breaking or getting dirty. Definitely not better than Craftsman though.

Any of them are better than a stick and a rock when your stuck on the side of the road.

I plan on stopping by and grabbing a set of the dewalt bit set with the 10 dollor off coupon, then going back later and using it to pick up the two pack XRP battery set on sale for 99.00 minus 10 for 89.00 bucks.

You know why the building stores have spanish signs, the're about half or more of their customer base in construction supply sales.

I went by there earlier today. One of the things I wanted was the slip joint plier sets. I didn't see it with the other display items. One girl told me they were in the tool dept. The guy there said they were'nt in that dept. After walking BACK to the display I asked somone else. Of course they said it may be in the tool dept.! The guy walked back over there with me and of course we didn't find it. We then walked around the store looking for it after the computer definitely said they had it. He said he would check some other area while I waited but he eventually ended up helping someone else for a while. I got tired of waiting so I eventually put back what I had and left. It's not good to advertise something if you don't have it where it can be found:(

I don't mind the bilingual enter/exits at Lowes and Home Depot, half the people ignore the signs anyway :(.

Thank you for posting this sale Johnnie.

Thanks for the heads up! I need a set of cheap tools to pack around in my truck. Tools in a vehicle end up wearing the chrome off from constantly rubbing together, I hate wasting high dollar tools just to ride in the toolbox!

If they come from a culture that doesn't believe in common sanitary practices, what makes you think a sign in their native language is going to magically enlighten them?

At my local Lowes, they had these sale items as soon as you walked in the store and they also had them in the tool section.

I had the same problem you had at Home Depot. They have sale items and they don't even know where they're at.

I have dealt with quite a few people in my job that didn't speak English but could read it and write it. That's been extremely consistent over the years - you couldn't have a conversation with them but email was OK.

Since about half the people doing construction and handyman work in many parts of this country are native Spanish-speakers, I'm guessing that Lowes thinks it's a good business practice to have bilingual signs. It doesn't hurt anyone and if it pisses someone off that's their own problem... not Lowes.

That was almost the exact excuse Lowes gave me when I emailed them.

Most of my, and my wife's, ancestors came here from Germany, do we see German signage all over everywhere to assist these LEGAL immigrants??
Due mainly to my place of employment, which is just a few blocks down street from the Lowes in question, we have a large Asian and Indian population in this area. Again, do we see foreign language signage in these LEGAL immigrants languages to assist them??
Why not??

It's not just Lowes, I chewed *** at my electric utility about why, in the middle of Iowa, I have to dial "1" for english??

Not all spanish-speakers are illegal immigrants.

1st generation immigrants from different-language countries struggle to learn English. The 2nd generation is typically bilingual, and by the 3rd generation, the original language is often lost completely and they speak English as their primary language.

When the German immigrants first populated Wisconsin and other parts of the midwest, they spoke German, faced prejudice against them and lived in German-culture communities. Parts of Pennsylvania still have Dutch and German-speaking pockets. Just because the Germans came 2-3 centuries ago doesn't make it any different. If there were a sudden influx of German-speakers shopping at your local Lowes, you bet your **** they would put up signs in German, too.

Call me old fashioned but I would think the hiring process would define rules of the job. Actually, it is the law in many states, whatever your language or culture.

Stopped by Lowe's to pickup some stuff for work- I saw a bunch of SALE signs on various Kobalt tools (as mentioned here).

Going by my (weak) memory, the 40 piece socket/ratchet set and the 11 (?) piece combo wrench sets were the only things that were USA Made. Thought about picking up the screwdriver set- I think it was like 10 or 11 pieces for $10, but it was made in China. I did pick up the 3 piece slip joint plier set (China) for use at work- we have some of these already and they're pretty decent.

I did pick up the 40 piece socket/ratchet set for myself, but I haven't even opened the box yet to examine them. I will agree that the ratchet appears to be almost the same as the Cman, except the handle grip area is a different shape. I almost picked up a set of the combo wrenches, seemed like a good deal, and they had a nice feel to them. Not raised panel and not full polished, but more like a pebbly finish.

If you missed out on the 3/8 socket set or the 10 piece satin finished wrench sets, don't panic, those are going to be the new everday price on those items until they're all gone. That 1/4 set is still on the shelf for $12.48 too. The salesman in my local Lowes seemed to think that Kobalt may be changing suppliers again. Time will tell I guess. The 10 piece wrench sets are great for in the trunk sets. They're the same as the satin Napa, Allen, K-D, or other Danaher produced set. The metric set skips the 18mm wrench and a single 18mm Kobalt wrench runs $10.36 though.
