(Putting this in its own thread to help those searching in the future.)

All these years on GJ and never seen this mentioned.
I was proud enough, as it was, owning a 16mm.
Just picked up this beautiful GEDORE:

Is a 3/8" drive socket not sufficient for that application?
The last drain plug that I had to loosen required a 1/2" drive ratchet to break it loose. Jiffy Lube really didn't want that one to come off.

Anyways, I think the point of that 1/4" drive socket is so that it makes it harder to overtighten the nut/bolt. That or you don't want to carry a different drive socket sets.

Yeah, that'll stop em! Uh huh.

I was JUST looking for one the other day, and came to the conclusion that they do not exist...apparently I was wrong.

I have a wera 1/4" set that is in my track (motocross) toolbox, but my bike requires a 17mm socket for one of the adjuster on the shock. So I've having to carry a 3/8" ratchet for just one socket. You sir, are a hero.

Interesting. Don’t have a need for it. But I’ve got a 5/8” in 1/4” there’s just been one situation it was really handy. But it was just as easy to use my Snap On 3/8” drive in a 1/4” body with a regular 5/8” socket.

17mm, wow. You must use socket rails to store your sockets? I don't think I've ever seen a socket organizer with a slot for 17mm in 1/4 drive.

I don't like socket skips or empty spots in socket racks, but I also don't like having too many sockets, so I try to keep my overall socket count and socket size ranges (for each drive size) cut down to only what I find useful semi-regularly. I top my 1/4 drive sets out at 14mm and 9/16. If I ever needed anything larger, I would buy it and store it in my specialty socket drawer instead of with my general use sockets. That would be enough to keep my mild OCD at bay when it comes to looking at my socket organization racks.

Oh this is terrrrible news. I’ve been extremely proud of not only 15mm deep and shallow 1/4” drive socket but of the 5/8” too AND in all matching manufacturers. It was those fn Hansen trays that drove me to the brink of insanity filling those pegs.

And now you introduce not only a new size but a whole different brand.

You’re evil knurled, pure evil 👿

Just carry a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter and the socket. No need for multiple ratchets.

Could you post the part number please? I've been looking for one for a while. I have a specific application that I can't fit a 3/8" drive in, when installing winches on dozers. It's for one wire clamp so the cab doesn't need to be removed. They are too tight and in an extremely awkward spot for a regular combination wrench to get any meaningful torque to break it loose.

I actually made a 1/4" 17mm I took a 1/4" drive socket and cut the drive end off and drilled a hole in the drive end of a cheap 3/8" drive 17mm socket slightly smaller than the 1/4" socket and pressed that in the 17mm socket and put a couple small tack welds for good measure. I would like to have a regular socket though.
