The 3928 kicks up a D on the end of the part number. Usually that means discontinued. I'll run out to the garage to see if I can answer the other question.

My 80546 is a pin.

I did find one search hit in an amazon review that said one was magnetic and the other was not. But every other place says magnetic for both.

If you look at some other sites, it appears from pictures that the 3928 is 6" total length including socket, while the 80546 has a 6" (or at least longer than the 3928) extension plus the socket. At least, that's what it appears. I have a 3-piece set of these branded under NAPA or Carlyle, though they are clearly made by Gearwrench. Think I got them on sale for around $20 a couple years ago. Have only used them once so far but I liked the magnet more than the traditional rubber insert for sure.

In my opinion magnetic (and even clip type style) spark plug sockets are the best to use.

Koken makes some of the best in both magnetic and clip type styles ( and yes Koken even sells the type with rubber inserts as well).

I gave up on rubber insert style/type spark plug sockets years ago.

Although I still have all three style/type spark plug sockets (but like I stated, stopped using the rubber insert spark plug sockets years ago).

Thanks for the help so far.

Well I found a video in which the individual part numbers are visible on the blow molded set case (molded into the plastic). 3928D is definetly magnetic and is 6" overall length. The 'D' is molded in the P# in the plastic so it must mean something other than discontinued.

@lardy1 is your 80546 magnetic? Is it about 6" overall length or is just the extension piece 6" plus the socket?

I also think that some of the sites are using the wrong pictures.

OK, got it figured out ............................. found another video that has the 80546. It is also magnetic and 6" overall length. Looks just the same as the 3928. I can't see or find any difference at all between the two. Maybe just changed p# or different factory or something.

Some sites are definetly using the wrong picture that is probably a different socket size and makes the proportion look wrong.

Interestingly (and annoyingly) I went to check my set and found there is actually no stamping other than the size on each of the tools. The outside blow-mold case has the set part number, but there is no identification on the tools like individual part number, manufacturer, COA, or anything at all. Wonder how that would play out if I had to warranty one. Anyway, would be curious to see how yours looks when you get it, as mine is several years old (the set is marked NAPA and not Carlyle as they are now sold) and I wonder if any of them are stamped.
