I am looking for metal alternative ideas —- I would like to build foot boards on a flatbed pickup truck bed, the stake pockets are designed for a 2x4. (3.5” x 1.5”). I would like to use alumium or possible steel but would like to keep them somewhat lightweight. No matter how dry the wood it always seems to warp. Anyone have any good ideas?

Maybe something like this pipe stake with your boards bolted to it?

or

I've looked for Aluminum or steel channel that would fit in a stake pocket properly and haven't found anything.

I made a canoe-hoop using 3.5" x 1.5" x .125" wall aluminum tube but with square corners, simply because that's what the metal vendor had available. If you can find that size in round corners you are golden. Of course steel tube will always have round corners if steel works for you.

The aluminium is super light weight but I had to hammer the stake corners in the bed with a cold chisel plus grind a relief in the square tubing to make it fit but it works mint, plus it's an old Dodge in the rust belt so who cares lol!

I have a similar project going to extend the walls of my dump trailer.

3 X 1-1/2 X 14 GA (.083 wall) steel. Is my current plan. They do make 3.5", but its crazy expensive.

3 x 1.5 is roughly $10/ft. 2.45lbs/ft.

Pipe stakes but they aren't that cheap.

Our metal yard will bend up stuff like this for fairly cheap (like $5 per piece + material).

3 inch c channel is pretty common for stakes. Tack some 1/2" on to take up the slack if it bother you.
