I'd like to perform mild modifications to an old blasting cabinet. Looking at the Dust Deputy system for exhaust filtration. Available for about $100 on Amazon.

There are other products which appear to operate on the same general design, and which cost less. I don't have any experience with any of them. Wondering whether any of you who do can say whether the Dust Deputy is, from a functional standpoint, the best of the bunch.

No first hand experience but I have been looking at some of the sub $50 offerings.
New to the market is a Bauer branded cyclone to mount on top of a bucket. Not yet in stock at my local store

The dust deputy is taller than the knockoffs. The height to diameter ratio in a cyclone is important. Does it allow 10 percent material vs 5 percent with the deputy? Just a guess as I do not have both.

I have a dust deputy - Basic one - seems like it was around $40

had to cut a hole in a bucket lid and I have to keep a weight on it to keep it from tipping over but I really think it’s worth every penny.
I use it on the sandblasting cabinet and on my table saw.

I love that thing

I have to say the dust deputy is a real good product, i don’t know if i would use anything else. I built a dust collection system and there is almost zero dust after the deputy at the bottom of the filter. It’s so effective i didn’t need a sump below the filter, it’s that good.

I also have a dust deputy attached to my blast cabinet and it was well worth the money!

I have one of these. I can't compare it to a dust deputy as I've never had one.

That's the one I have for the weekly cleaning of my pellet stove. I've gone from clogging the filter every week to once a month.

I have one of these as well. I bought it over the dust deputy due to the price and easier storage. I turned my shop vac into a “cart” by putting pvc on top of the wheels. A piece of plywood mounts to these and the bucket drops through. Lots of pics on the net of this

That thing is enormous. Should be called the Dust Sheriff. What is the diameter on those ports?

Was going to post in Re-Purposing Thread......
Way better than a bucket, takes up more real estate 'tho.Vac Repurpose.jpg
That looks really great. Possibly even large enough to handle the Super Dust Deputy that Renegade shared.
What is the yellow thing you used to block off the inlet port?

Thank you for sharing these, guys. Thinking I may integrate both of your designs into what I'm trying to do.

Those are about the same size as the cabinet I'm working with. Are your deputies any more effective with a bit of water in the bottom of their bucket?

I started with a Dustopper, and have since replaced it with an actual Dust Deputy due to some issues I had with the Dustopper design. The Dustopper works fine with the fine dust from circular saw cutting and even smaller planer shavings, but chokes and clogs constantly when I'm cleaning up hand plane shavings or anything with a bit of length to it. In comparison, the Dust Deputy just drops it all into the bucket without issue. I've also noticed what seems like a bit more airflow from the Dust Deputy, but that might be perception rather than an actual difference.

I have one of these, and a dust deputy. One is in the garage, one in the basement. They have the same shop vac model attached to them. they both work well; the dust deputy is a bit better, but it cost more, and required more pieces to make work well. I was dissatisfied with the dust deputy until I got the leaks fixed. Mine is mounted to a ten gallon trash can; I have a wood plate for the DD to mount to, and had to caulk it very well, and put weather stripping between the lid and that trash can. (and build a support for inside the trash can, to keep it from getting collapsed under suction. the dustopper just snaps on to a five gallon bucket, and works well. A bit of sealing at that joint would improve it, I'm sure. One real complaint about the dustopper is that it can get clogged if you **** up something like a paper towel or a piece of plastic bag.

I'm interested in what you've done here as I have the same DD. Could you start your own thread and detail what you've done?
Not much to really say here.
Old Craftsman vac that the motor died, pulled the plastic motor enclosure & motor off. Enlarged the hole in the vac lid, where the vacuum motor inlet float cage went through, to match the Dust Deputy. Drilled holes & bolted together. Siliconed up the screw holes that were open & some random plug that fit the old vac inlet.
I like the fact that it is way more stable than the supplied bucket. Or even than when the bucket was strapped to my shop vac. The only downside is the room it takes up.

I use the generic chinese imitation from Amazon with my blast cabinet and get almost zero dust in the shop vac dedicated to the cabinet. Looked at it the other day out of curiosity and there's gotta be at least 30-40 hours of blasting on the existing vac filter. I probably should have checked the bucket the cyclone is attached to as well.
