Looking for a builder/contractor in NW WA state

Hi folks

I've been looking for a builder to at least get a quote if not start a garage build. I've talked to friends, neighbors, real estate agents (i.e. folks in the 'biz') who have had various referrals... however, I can't seem to get anyone to actually even give a quote or come out for a look! It seems everyone is very busy these days - so either this project is too small or too big.

I am not really interested in a DIY for this project, but I would entertain a pre-fab metal building (I think...) I've got a current detached garage that would either be expanded or just torn down for the new shop.

If anyone can point me in the right direction or has some experiences in the area, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello Rocket

You're not being singled out. My mother and sister have the same issue up in Sequim - you can't find anybody to do anything any more.

How far NW are you?? Joyce? Beaver? Clallam Bay?

You could consider going to the local lumber yard (do they still have those???) and find the contractor sales counter and inquire with the sales personnel if they can give you a couple of contractor names.

All the trades in my area are ******* with new construction. They massively prefer it to renovations or working on a site with an occupied home. Nobody cares if they make ruts in the yard, they can toss debris around all they want and the boys can take a whiz in the bushes without anyone complaining. The way it was explained to me is that a reno or remodel will net them slightly more per square foot but they can turn new construction so much faster that it more than makes up for it.

It took me a year-- yes, a year to finally get a contractor out to my place for a quote for residing my house. I wasn't calling people constantly but engaged with at least 4 businesses that either told me they were too busy, would schedule an appointment and never show or come out to measure and promise to call back and then ghost me. This is the nature of the beast right now it seems.

Hey all - thanks for the ideas. I'll keep searching around and see if I get any hits. It's been harder than I thought. I know prices are up (on top of our already high costs here), labor is scarce, but even if willing to pay and even get a job in, you have the get in line (i.e. a few friends interested in getting a/c installed - looking at dates in 2023 o_O )

For the people asking, I'm near Seattle if that helps. Appreciate the help guys

Still not specific enough. You should add it to your profile so local people can answer your questions better.
I was a GC on Whidbey Island for 30 years. I might have been able to give you a lead if I knew where you are.

LoL. I can see a bathroom being a little high in regards to $/sq.ft. but that is ridiculous. $433 per. WTF is happening. It is going to get to the point that houses will become throwaway items when they need a major repair like a roof, HVAC, etc.

Got ya. This is in the Greenlake neighborhood. If you have any leads around here, I'm all ears. It's starting to warm up if you want to come out for one more job :p

Yeah. That is almost unbelievable.

I have received similar offers several times in the three years I've been retired. I'm almost afraid to just visit.

I am in Skagit County 16 miles south of Bellingham and I do not think the contractor I used to build my pole building. But he does not go any further south then the Snohomish/King county line.
