Guys, I need a jack and jack stands for basic tire rotations and oil changes. Vehicles involved are Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71, Subaru Outback, and Honda Civic. Looking at Menards due to 11% off or Harbor Freight. Please let me know what I need and sizes. A buddy tells me 3 ton or 3.5 ton low profile jack and jack stands that will go 12”-18” in height. What do recommend from Menards or Harbor Freight? Thanks.

I think your buddy is probably right. The trick is going to be getting the tall enough to get your Silverado off the ground and still get under the Civic. We don't have Menards where I am so I am going to refer to Harbor Freight. This jack is a likely candidate, but be careful and make sure you get the one that is low profile and long reach. It gives you an extra 4 1/2 inches of lift that may make a difference. The low profile one only goes to 20 inches max height and the low profile and long reach goes to 24 1/2 inches. For the jack stands look at the 6 ton stands from Harbor Freight. They go up to 23 3/4 inches which I suspect you will need to get your tires off the ground.
I've got a chevy. Normal 3 ton daytona jacks for fine for me. I jack up the rear from the differential, otherwise you are just expanding your springs. Same with my floor jack, 3 ton. My only caution with 6 ton is that could be dangerous on the civic. 6 ton stands will require you to jack that civic up high jjust to get them on the stands.

1x pair of Rhino ramps for oil changes.
You shouldn't work under the car without stands or ramps. I'll do work with just the jack, without being under the car, just think about it before you crawl under.
For oil changes forget about jacks and get a beefy pair of Rhino ramps. I've done everything, oil, trans, diffs, transfer case with ramps. So much safer. Jacks only come out for tire rotations.

I have the rhino ramps. Just got them and used them yesterday. Love them. World of difference than trying to do oil changes without them.

I’d advise a Jack from Harbor Freight they are great. I have one at home I want to get another one too. I’ve also got an older trolley Jack too from Craftsman. But I like my Daytona Jack. The Pittsburgh and Daytona are both very good. We also use them at work too. For Jack stands I’m not sure who is good these days I’ve got some Craftsman stands I got at Sears years ago. Harbor Freight stands have been questionable in recent years. Though the new Daytona stands look pretty nice and match the jacks too.
The new HF jack stands now have double-locking pins to secure the jack stand.

The HF Daytona jacks are a good deal if you use coupons etc. The normal price isn’t anything special in my eyes.
I was gifted a pair of 3 ton torins and have the "new" HF post recalls stands. The HF IMO have much better quality welds "visually" than the torins. I wouldn't recommend the torins, which is why I recommended HF. HF also seems to take their recalls seriously which I appropriate.
I've heard that the duralast stuff holds up too. Any brand that can hold up and not crush me, I'd be ok with.

If you're working on anything besides concrete, I recommend Esco. Tripod design plus very wide leg geometry and big steel pads make them ideal for working on gravel or hardpacked dirt, or really any non-level surface.

If you're still using the recalled old ones you might be pushing your luck. Take them back for credit.

I instantly rule out any jack stands that do not have a flat welded plate foot on each leg as without it they can dig little L-shapes into asphalt and even had them chip/crack concrete under load over time. No good price on jack stands is worth the sickness in my stomach after seeing the damage they have done to an otherwise pristine driveway. The 6 ton Harbor Freight's have them but the 3 ton set does not.

The new Daytona stands are very nice - the welds on the ones I looked at appear to be robust. The old ones were almost all fine also - I had the PN affected and the posts were correctly made. I saw a total of three or four pairs that had the mis-cast posts on YouTube/etc., and my guess is there were very few pairs in the wild since only a few ever showed up on the internet during all the furor. The second "issue" was, as far as I could tell after a lot of searching at the time, purely a misuse of a single pair of stands.
Funny that several other brands use the same factory and sold the identical stands and I never did hear about any recall from any of them, where HF did the right thing (and then some).
The new Daytona stands look to be from the same factory as the ProLift set I have, though the welds on the sets I looked at in-store at HF had cleaner, beefier welds than my ProLift. This is also the same as the original pair:
The Esco stands are very nice also (as they should be for more than 2X the $$), though the lack of the ratcheting bar makes them a little fiddly.

I've been using the TEQ Correct 4 Ton Jack Stands from Advance Auto Parts and they have been spectacular. The welding is really nice, they are thick and heavy, and have a quick start system that raises the jack stand bar automatically without having to pull it up. They are $37 a piece at AAP but less if you use online coupons and order for in-store pickup.
NOTE: These do not lock with the pin in the photo. That pin is to keep the jack stand bar from rising when picking up the jack stand by the handle.
