The deck does look really nice, and it should help your roof last a lot longer, since it won't have any direct exposure to the weather.

Your place is looking great! I keep wondering why every time I check in, I expect to see pink, only to be disappointed!

Jeff, it won't be long now, I promise. Thus far I haven't been highly incentivized to get Mary Kay into the garage. It still cold here- last weekend was in the 20s so its not exactly convertible weather. Also I had to agree to a year long lease for the spot for Mary Kay. I'll be paying for it until June so I might as well keep her there. But most importantly I've had a number of projects that I wanted to do before she came back. I wanted to paint the interior walls (done), insulate and drywall the bump out (done), get the lift installed (I still have some adjustments to do), get the Swisstrax flooring down (done), get the workbench installed (I'm working on the maple top now) and get some cabinets installed (waiting for a Saber cabinet order for a number of weeks now). All of this was easier done without Mary Kay in the way (she is a big girl after all). Also just having a space for the pallets of Ipe deck tiles, or Bison pedestals, or the cabinets or the boxes of flooring was lot easier without Mary Kay in the garage.

That said the garage lease is up in June so Mary Kay will be coming back soon. I'm expecting to move her sometime in April. I need to finish the lift install and also sell the engine hoist I have (and don't have room for) and the garage will be ready enough for her. Just in time for nice weather.

Pickles, the deck is coming together nicely! That was a great material choice for aesthetics. Fits the modern thing you've got going on very well.

Those Sonic tools look killer too. The set looks pretty comprehensive and it's tough to argue with the organization. Looks like a really nice setup for the home-gamer, and even better that you can get it all with the cabinets. Very cool. Can't wait to see all that with a top on it so it looks like a real workbench haha!

Keep up the good work!

What’s the first lesson of garage journal? It has to be that if it’s not a car, truck or motorcycle, the tools to work on cars, trucks or motorcycles or perhaps stuff for woodworking then it doesn’t belong in the garage.
But we all have at least some stuff for yard maintenance. Where to put those shovels, racks, trimmers or mowers? The answer is almost invariably a shed. Be it big or little, some cheap plastic thing or something custom built that matches exactly the architectural style of the house a shed can be a answer that keeps this type of stuff from cluttering the garage.
Because my city sized lot is so small I have a lot less of this stuff than most of the rest of you. I have no gas powered tools and only two battery powered yard tools (a small push mower and a hedge trimmer) and a small amount of hand tools. A small shed would be perfect to store this stuff. My problem is where to put the shed. Again because my yard is so small I really have no place to put up a shed.
One of the few areas I do have available is in the gangway along the side of my house. So I’ve decided to build something there. It’s really more of a closet than it is a shed but functionally it serves the same purpose. Here’s how far I have gotten.4A35B047-F4FD-45F1-8D9A-6D428CC4152C.jpeg
This picture was taken from the door to my basement wood shop. this whole area is tucked below part of the kitchen on the main floor of my house so it’s covered from the rain. The “closet” is about eight feet wide and about one foot deep. There still is about two feet of with left to the gangway so you can comfortably walk past still. This is my entire collection of yard tools except for my mower. I will be working on putting up a barn style door to cover this stuff up. But for now I’m happy to have gotten this stuff out of the basement where it’s been since we tore down the old garage. Even happier that its not going to clutter up the new garage.

I really hate unfinished projects so I’m very happy to say that I’m …… ALMOST done with the deck 7D553AAA-3E09-40C9-8D02-52919111EF20.jpeg
Arrrrghh….. Truth is that I got as far as I could. Somehow I shorted my order for both pedestals and deck tiles. I need six more of each. I’ve already sent an email to the company that I bought them from. Hopefully they can get me remaining order soon. Happily I would call the deck usable even if it’s not complete. More happily still this also means that I probably only have another 200 or 300 pounds of this stuff to haul up my stairs. My wife is picking out deck furniture now. The French Fermob brand of stuff she wants is both very expensive and completely out of stock. Will have to see what she ends up picking instead.

Nice work on the tool storage...perfect for what you need. That deck looks great! Those tiles look like a much nicer, heavier version of some tiles I put in my wife's greenhouse recently.

Thank all of you for the kind comments. It really helps keep up the motivation to continue to continue working and try and cross projects off the to do list.
I haven’t worked on the deck in the last few days- I do not have the last few deck tiles and pedestals I need- but the wife and I spent some time looking at deck furniture. Still not sure what we are going to get but I think we’ll try to make sure we have some decision in the next week or so. We want to be able to enjoy the deck this summer.
Since there isn’t anything more that I can do on the deck I decided to work on my workbench top. I plan on having two different sections of hard maple top. The section that goes on top of the cabinets is basically done with the exception of finish. Here’s a photo.6CD2A9EE-3674-4B6C-BCB2-C498C879DEC4.jpeg
I plan to put on a few coats of boiled linseed oil for finish. I also plan on making a second section of workbench that is a little higher and a little shallower that will partially sit on top of what you see here and that will span the distance in front of the windows you partially see above. I have that glued up now. I’ve put together a home made router sled that I will use to flatten the bench top. Not sure if I’ll have the motivation to continue working on that today. We’ll see. I think I’m in track to get Mary Kay back in her new home this month even if I don’t bother working more today.

How much headroom do you have over the left side of the Bench versus the stairs? I know I’d be hitting my head on a regular basis.

My father had a couple of odd angles in his basement so he just resorted to wearing a hardhat.

Captain, If I am standing straight in front of the wider tool cabinet there is about 6 foot 8 inches of head room. More than enough for me at 6 feet tall. I've gotten used to accessing the smaller cabinet from the side. I would have to crouch down to access it from the front - pulling stuff out from the side while standing in front of the wider tool cabinet is much more comfortable.

You're planning on insulating and drywalling the incline part, right? So that should keep you from bonking your head.

I plan (probably this winter) on having the main part of the garage ceiling spray foam insulated and painted black. I am thinking that I will do the same to the incline as well. If I don't like the look I could put up a sheet of drywall on the incline.

We got some deck furniture delivered today. 90065188-A505-4060-B6C1-5299E27D1183.jpegIt’s obviously very green. Was the wife’s decision but I like it. She also ordered a couch and two chairs (not green). I am also supposed to get my shipment of the last six deck tiles I need so hopefully I can call that project complete in the next day or two.

The roof deck looks great. Can’t wait for the rest of the furniture to arrive.

In the fire service when new apparatus arrives at the station, they have a “housing” for it. (Think party). I can’t see why you can’t have one for the “Mary Kay” when she arrives back to her new home.
