So I was working on my truck with a buddy, when i noticed i was using a Mastercraft Maximum Flex Wrench. Hmm... I thought where did these come from? So i asked my buddy if they were his "Nope" he replied. I flipped the wrench over and its labeled GearWrench. So one side is labeled Mastercraft Maximum and the other is labeled GearWrench
These two wrench are from the GearWrench 7pc set I bought from NAPA

No, that's correct. Canadian Tire co-brands its ratcheting wrenches as Gearwrench / Mastercraft Maximum. I believe Sears does the same thing. It is kind of odd that Danaher wants to make Gearwrench a stand alone name, and then rents it out like that...

Not all Mastercraft tools are made by Danaher, either. Lots are from Stanley. Canadian Tire contracts manufacturers to produce its private label brands.

As matthew said it's not an error, that's how all of the Mastercraft Maximum ratcheting wrenches are branded. On one side it says Maximum, and on the other side it says "GearWrench" or "by GearWrench". I have 4 or 5 sets of them like this. They are literally GearWrench wrenches that have Mastercraft's branding added to one side of them. Mastercraft is just a rebrand for all of their tools, most the original manufacturer doesn't label too, but with the ratcheting wrenches GW does for some reason.

And to those asking, yes, Mastercraft tools are only in Canada at Canadian Tire stores. That's their house brand for tools. They have regular Mastercraft line tools which are pretty low grade, and then Maximum is their "pro" grade. Which is still not really pro-grade, but more like high end home owner grade (see GearWrench wrenches).

I have the regular length and stubby ratcheting wrenches in both metric and SAE, and just recently picked up the XL double box end ratcheting wrench set in metric. This is my new favorite wrench to use! So much leverage and the no-offset handles really reduces cam out.

They can also be had on really good deals when they are on sale. The regular price on the XL's in Canadian Tire is $249 CAD, but they go on sale regularly for $125 CAD. The set from GearWrench through Amazon.ca is $225 CAD. So it's basically a way for Canadians to get GW wrenches at 50% off.

The only thing I'm sad about with the arrangement is Canadian Tire only re-brands the most popular selling stuff. GW makes a 5-pc extended size add-on set for the XL's that I'd love to get (20-25mm), but Mastercraft doesn't have their own version of that add-on set to snag for cheap. So my only option is to bite the bullet one of these days and pay the full $165 on Amazon.

Are you sure they don't? I am sure I have seen that extension set in store

Mastercraft quality can be all over the map. My woodworking F-clamps are Mastercraft, bought on sale at half price. They are German made Bessey . The tool kit in the truck box that replaced a stolen Great Neck set, is a plain Mastercraft, you know the 200 for $69.99 in a blow molded case. I should put a paper bag over my head when I have to use them.

BTW, that interesting on the wrenches. I always thought they were.

Yeah for sure, like any rebranded tool name, the quality can be really hit or miss depending on who the actual manufacturer is. The ratchet wrenches are an easy one to spot as decent because GearWrench puts their own branding right on them.

As a general rule of thumb I totally avoid anything that is basic Mastercraft, and will only look at the Maximum hand tools. I've had Maximum impact sockets, chrome sockets, combo wrenches, ratchets, etc for many years now and have seen no reason to upgrade them. Whoever makes them does a pretty decent job. The ratchets aren't really a joy to use per se, just basic 72T big headed clunkers, but they have held up fairly well.

Power tools I don't touch anymore no matter what level of Mastercraft is on them. Wasted too much money over the years on junk that doesn't last or isn't accurate.

Maximum screwdrivers are OK, if not kind of 'meh'. I had a couple sets with soft rubber handles that fell apart fairly easily. I picked up a new set recently that all had metal striking caps and thick shanks that I'm planning to use more as pry bars in the garage.

Your F-clamps are a good example of taking the time to check them over for COO and other signs of quality. Generally the Made in China stuff you can guess the quality level, but if you see Taiwan or US or Germany then you might be getting lucky with a high quality rebrand.

Certain Maximum tools are identical or close to identical to Gearwrench including the new 90 tooth ratchets. I bought that bit socket set that goes on sale for $20 that includes the ratchet. Even from the outside you can tell that it's probably designed by Apex tool group with the snap ring holding the plate in. The internals are close to identical to photos of the GW 84 tooth ratchet internals on GW's website.

^ I'd like to get a set of those new ratchets, but the ratchets themselves never go on sale. Just in the kits like you described. I guess for the price of the kits on sale it's worth it, but they're usually sockets or bits I have no need for.

The heads also look very bulky compared to my Tekton 90T ratchets. Not sure if that's an illusion behind the locked glass case, or if they are actually that huge comparatively.

As a general rule of thumb I totally avoid anything that is basic Mastercraft, and will only look at the Maximum hand tools.

In my experience both regular Mastercraft and Maximum have variation over time and depending on the item -

I recently bought the 50 piece 1/4" socket set for work, and my first impressions have been very favourable. Really nice set, really complete. On sale for $50, I'd say it's very worth buying if your socket collection has any skips - it's a really nice complete set. Ratchet seems quite nice, too, was almost sorry I don't need another set for myself.

For any electric / cordless / pneumatic tools I haven't found either of them to be worthwhile. Better off with name brand, or for some air tools Princess Auto is decent (have yet to find an air tool where I thought that about Mastercraft).

For wrenches, I've had good results with all the Mastercraft stuff. The combo wrenches have been good with the Maximum and Mastercraft.

There's been a few years where Maximum branding was being used to sell some more gimmicky stuff, but that stuff seems to be on the way out at the moment.

The regular Mastercraft ratchets sucked, then were good, then sucked, then were good. Always good enough for occasional use, but variable.

Screwdrivers are pretty meh, both Maximum and Mastercraft.

I don't like the 2-component grip pliers, but my older vinyl dip ones have held up really well, and the new Maximum vinyl grip ones seem fine.

My dad bought a Mastercraft claw hammer as a spare and it's disappointing.

So I'd say they're selectively good buys for both Maximum and Mastercraft. Just don't buy anything that is branded Jobmate...

A Mastercraft tool that's dam good is the ratcheting tap T handle. They are made in Germany, and they are expensive. I used one at work almost daily for 25 years. I've been using it at home for the last 5 years. 30 years of use. About 10 years ago I thought one at home would be handy, and there was a similar one on sale at BusyBee (Grizzly). The first time I tried to use it, I pitched in the scrap iron bucket.

Is this the one you're talking about?

Could have saved yourself a lot of typing if you just read the OP. It would be a factory qc oopsie since OP bought them at Napa.

I have gearwrench, craftsman and mastercraft all labelled gearwrench.

I used to really like them. Let me say that again, I like them for light duty work. I shattered the spinning part in my 12mm, and yesterday I oval'd the racheting end of my 18mm. If they are going to make them in a bigger 18mm size it should be able to put up with the breaking torque required to free a 18mm fastener.

Sorry, that's not the one, at that price ,it might be a German made replacement, so it could be worth checking out. After the BusyBee fiasco , I did buy one from CT and it was around $30 for home. Guessing 10 years ago, as I've been retired for 5.

Here is where my not being able to post photos gets annoying. A two jaw chuck and a ratchet like a Yankee with a sliding bar.
