Hello all,

I have newer Genie G3T remote that I tried to program to work with an older model Overhead Door Signature Screw Drive opener.

I followed the directions in the Overhead manual and the Genie now opens the garage door, but when I press the button that I programmed again, it briefly attempts to go in the same direction to open the door and stops, but I cannot get it to close the door.

FWIW: the existing wall mounted panel works correctly.

Any ideas?

If that is a 3-button remote, you need to add it to the opener as a 3-button remote and use the 3rd button rather than the first to close the door. If you want one button to do everything, you need to add the opener as a 1-button remote, even though it has 3 buttons.

Maybe your Safety Sensor Light Beams are not pointing at each other.

If the receiver sensor is not seeing the beam from the transmitter sensor, it assumes that there is something, like a small child playing on the floor, blocking the beam.

We’ve been having a similar problem with our Craftsman opener.

Thanks.

It IS a 3-button remote, and I followed the steps listed below in the Overhead Door Signature screwdrive installation manual to program a one button remote, primarily because I was a bit confused by what it says for programing a multi-button remote: "Repeat step 1 above 'Program one-button remote' for each button and operator", since I'm the only "operator".

Check the alignment or for blockage of the electric eyes at the bottom?
Thanks.

Correct me, if wrong, but if that were the case, wouldn't the door react the same when I used the mounted wall panel to close it?

I had this problem when an LED bulb was installed. Usually before opening, the door had been closed for a while and the bulb was off (no interference). But when attempting to close, the door had typically been recently opened, hence the light was on, and caused interference. Something to check anyway…

I missed your comment that the wall switch worked. Yeah, that indeed means the beams can't be the root cause (too bad -- I recently fixed a remote problem that way and it's a trivial fix.)

Has the Genie remote ever brought the door down since you started programming it? If not, I doubt it's the antenna. More likely something in compatibility between the opener and remote, something that's often been tricky for me. Does any other remote bring the door down?

Not a problem, I appreciate your input.

Yes, the Genie remote use to bring the door down, when I first got it.

If the wall button is continuously pressed the photo eyes are over ruled. At least that s how the Geni operator on my door works.
Thanks!

Well, I may stand corrected. I DO have to continuously press the wall button to close the door, so I'll definitely have to re-check the alignment of the eyes and make sure the beams are pointing at each other.

I attempted to realign the safe-t-beams, but I don’t believe that I did so, but some things that I noticed:

1) Both before & after attempting to realign the beams, the door reacts differently, depending on whether I try to close it with the remote vs. the wall mount.

When I press & release the remote button that I programmed, the door only moves upward briefly like it’s trying to open again and doesn’t move down at all; and it does not keep move when I hold the button down.

When I press & release the wall mount button, the door moves downward towards closing, but stops. It doesn’t move upward at all; and as noted earlier, when I hold the button down, the door closes.

2) One safe-t-beam has a green light and the other has a red light. The one with the red light has a broken wire (See attached).

3) While adjusting the position of the one with the green light, occasionally the green light would turn on very briefly and/or flicker, but never stays on.

That said, I’m not really sure how to know if I aligned the beams correctly, other than trial and error, and since nothing has changed… I’m not sure what to do next.

I had this problem for a year, and it was a bit intermittenant. The LED light bulb I was using was causing interferance. Light was off, it would open fine, but I could not close it until light turned off or I unscrewed it. Switched back to CFL and its been fine.

I would suggest getting some new photo cells and replace the old ones. Also, if you have LED light bulbs near the unit....it will definitely cause interference with closing the door and those photo eyes.

It appears that you have a very simple fix by repairing that broken wire, but if that doesn't work you may need to swap out the photo eyes.

Did you repair broken wire on the one sensor? I assume you did but you didn't comment about it.

Thanks!

Yeah, apparently it was as simple as fixing the broken wire. 😉

FWIW: I’m using a CFL.

In reference to the LED bulbs causing reception problems, I can vouch that did indeed happen to me. I would open the garage with the button on the wall as I would leave in the morning. Once I had backed out of the garage I would hip the remote button to close the door and it would just ignore my attempts. I would pull up really close almost having the front tires on the concrete apron of the garage floor and the remote would work. When I get home in the evening, the remote would open the door nearly anywhere along the long driveway. Once those lights turn on, reception drops dramatically. I replaced those bulbs with these and now the doors open without any issues at all.

^^^^ That's good to know about the non-interference LED's.

Fortunately, I was able to find some incandescents to fix my CFL/LED interference issue some time back.
