Garage Heater Costs Canada

Thank you all for accepting me in the group. I live in Edmonton Alberta and am currently finishing my double garage. A general question to any and all. I have one quote thus far for the installation of a Hot Dawg 45000 btu gas heater. The quote listed the material required, but did not give any price break down. (just the total cost)I know how much the heater costs to an everyday consumer but know very little about the gas plumbing and installation work or time it takes. Anyone have an idea on what an average cost for something like this is. The gas line runs inside right below where the heater will be mounted so no additional gas lines to install. The quote is for 3250 CDN, thoughts and comments on if this is a fair estimate are appreciated. I would like some input so I can confidently review this and any future quotes.

45000 btu sounds about right for a double garage, but it depends on the square footage and ceiling height. You can go on-line and figure out the btu size required for your garage.
You state the gas line runs inside under the heater location. Does the gas line run by the heater or is there a separate line run for the future heater? If it’s a separate line, it will be cheaper. If you need to put in a tee Into the existing line, then more expensive and time.
Hot Dawg, isn’t that a Princes Auto brand? If so, I would recommend staying away from that and getting a little better brand. They work, I’m just not a fan of that brand.
Are you running the vent through the roof or wall? Big price difference going through the wall. Through the roof is cheaper.
I’m near Lethbridge and the prices are around 2500 to 3500 for install with a brand name furnace.
You also need to run a 115 volt 15 amp circuit to power the heater. Is that included in the price?

If your handy, install the furnace, venting and thermostat wire yourself and get the HVAC guy to pull the permit and install the gas line and calibrate the gas pressure. Electrician can run a 15 amp circuit to the furnance.

Hot Dawg is Modine, not sold in Princess auto, they are a fine heater IMO . PA used to sell Big Max, but I now see Heatstar brand now

Supplied and installed for $1500?? Good luck with that. You'd be lucky to do it yourself to meet that price. $3000 would be a fair price to have a company ccomplete this job.

if youre quoting my thread, I didn't include any labour in my prices. I wasn't suggesting an install could be done for $1500 .

I installed my own garage heater then had a friend with a gas fitters licence hookup the gas.

If there is already a gas line to the location of the heater, you basically just need to hang it, cut the hole for the vent and wire it.

If I was hiring the whole thing out including supplying the heater, materials and labour for the gas, electric and cutting the vent hole I’d probably expect to pay $3,000. Generally I find hiring out costs 3x what I could do it myself for.

Look at the Rinnai EX38. Pricey, but the vent is included as is the programmable stat and you can install it yourself in a couple hours.

You must not have priced out heaters in Canada lately they have almost doubled in cost. Everyone online shows the 45000 at $1600.

Edmonton has a dealer ( garage boss) that has the hot dawg 45000 btu for 1095 cdn. Their web site is attached for anyone that may be interested in our area. Thanks to everyone for their inout withy this. I am having a Lennox installed. I appreciate the shared knowledge that has helped me make my decision.

You can't stay up on the price of anything now, watermelons at Costco for 17.99 says it all. It was a frustrating experience trying to get a price from some dealers/installers. All worked out in the end. Thanks again.

They are $7.99 in the states……..soon to be $5.99 in the summer season.

At $17.99…….that should be high enough to stifle sales.

The picture show what I did for shop heat. That was in 1990. HVAC was my first trade and business. So, I opted to do the installation myself. I would be surprised if I paid out less than you were quoted. I did hire a licensed gas fitter.
There are the permits and the gas fitting. Your HVAC guy should have insurance to cover the remote possibility of a problem that could get you sued for damages. This is not the time to get all fussy over a few bucks.

Depending on the scope of the install $3000 does not seem out of line. Run the gas line? Pull wires, add a breaker to an electrical breaker panel? It will take one guy the better part of a day, depending on gas and electrical.

I have installed heaters and spent over half the day just pulling the gas line.

Thanks, I did end up getting 3 quotes, 3000 does seem to be the average. One was higher, one lower and one right at 3000.

Not sure this is helpful, but here is a 30,000 btu Gas radiant heater, by Superior radiant products. Concentric vent, meaning only one hole in the wall for inlet/exhaust. It's quieter than the forced air gas heaters and with a ceiling fan, heat distribution is not an issue in this 20 x 30 detached with 8ft ceiling. Very efficient, garage stays around 68F all winter.
It was $1500 CDN installed, 10 years ago. Not one problem with it so far. (gas line was already in place)
Walls are 2x4 with R14 Roxul insulation, only R14 in the ceiling as well because I have storage above. 5/8 fire rated drywall, insulated garage doors.
Glad I didn't go for a 45000 btu, as it would have short cycled.
