Nice find on USA stuff at Lowes clearance table

I couldn't believe my eyes when I went into Lowes today and actually saw good stuff on the clearance table... usually it is picked through ****, that nobody wants, and is barely marked down or not even marked down at all.

The funny thing is that I wasn't even in there to shop, I was killing time while waiting to go to a family function and just wandering around the store.

This time, it was made in USA tools marked down from 50-70% off, and it was all stuff that I had eyeballed before but not really needed unless the price was right.

Anyways, all of this stuff is USA besides the stanley nail set trio, which is "Made in USA with global components"

The 12pc punch set was marked off 50%, while the individual punches were marked off as much as 60-70%, and the nail sets were marked down about 75%!

Anyways, it looks like Lowes is getting rid of all of their Made in USA chisels and punches to make way for their Kobalt brand and Stanley Bostich branded Chinese ****. Big surprise, right?

The Stanley Bostich China punch set is nearly identical to the Dasco, and priced exactly the same. You know that the poor bastards at Dasco got priced out by the Chinese, they couldn't meet the price that Lowes was demanding and got the boot.

Anyways, I walked out with $73 worth of stuff for $33, a total discount of almost 60% averaged.


I assume all Lowes in the country are switching over to the Stanley Bostich china ****, all three in my area are doing it simultaneously. If you have one in the area and are in the market for chisels or punches, it's definitely worth a shot early tomorrow morning. I wouldn't wait because this stuff will probably go pretty fast.



edit: FYI also on the clearance table were USA full sized crowbars and Estwing USA hammers of a couple styles, I didn't grab any because I really didn't need them.

Thanks guys. I just picked up the big set and the starter punch for $16. Fwiw, this was at the Waterfront Lowes in Pittsburgh (I am visiting my parents). The only things left there now are a couple of punches and some loose chisels. Bethel Park only had two chisels left.

Wow, I had an additional score today... I went back and they had the stuff on the table marked 50% off the marked clearance price with a couple sheets taped to the table

There were still two long cold chisels left, and a 9" prybar (I already bought the 12").

The prices for the cold chisels were $9.96 clearanced to $4.98, discounted to $2.49 each.

The prybar was $13.69 clearanced to $6.99, discounted to $3.50.


Basically I got $33.61 worth of product for $8.48, for a total discount of 75%

I've been lucky at one of my local Lowe's. They put a bunch of Estwing hammers and I snagged 3 of them for close to 50% off. I've been going back occasionally, and have found Dasco concrete chisels for 50% off. I just picked up 2 more cold chisels for about $2.50 apiece.

At one point, they had 3 DeWalt laser levels for $98 apiece which was $50 off retail. I just checked today and they only had one left.

Anyone have those Dasco punch and chisel sets for awhile? I've been wondering how well they hold up. I bought some last week but haven't had to use them yet. I really hope they are good quality since they are USA made, but the pricing makes me second guess them.

They're just fine from what I can tell... I have a dasco prybar and cold chisel, from a couple years ago, the cold chisel has seen some pretty good use and kept a decent edge needing only touch-up regrind.

The tip grinding on all of them is hardly what I would call pristine, but overall they seem to be robust and good quality steel.

I was a little worried the tips might wear quickly. I wasn't sure what quality of steel they could be using to sell them so cheaply. This makes me more confident in using them. Thanks.

I'm a broken record here, but vote with your wallets! The big chinese boxes are there to make money and will sell what is acceptable to the buyers. If nobody buys the cheap **** they won't sell it anymore. If the demand is there for quality US/Canadian/German made product thats what they will sell. Buy local, support your local family owned hardware stores that sell quality items.

Or they actually are too good... I worked 10 years straight at a NASA subcontractor that did aerospace R&D. I got laid off in February of this year, and have been on unemployment since.

I've tried getting damn near every job you can think of, and I've been turned away because I'm too qualified.

I'm stuck in this area since my girlfriend is in Nursing school, and my company was the ONLY one of its type within a 2hr radius.

Because I'm not the type to sit on my ***, I've started to go full time with the business I've been running for the last few years.

and don't get me wrong, if there was a similar priced usa tool next to an import i'd most likely pick up the usa tool to bring home(assuming the usa version isn't a pos like the lisle socket i just had fall apart). i'm just not the type to go out of my way to find american or not buy something just because its an import.

Thanks for the heads up! I hit the local Lowes today and scored the 3/4" long cold chisel at the top of the first pic for $3.98 and a 3 1/2 brick chisel for $4.00. These were on a separate clearance rack. They had a pry bar and some nail pullers mixed in with the new stuff, but no prices. Took the pry bar up and it was still $15-something, so I passed. Maybe I'll check again this weekend just in case!

wow i need to head on over to my local lowes and look for those type a deals. My HF punches and chisels are pure rust already! I use them but they just rust inside of my box i soaked them in vinegar for a day and that was enough. It turned what shiny parts were left, black.
