Im an elevator mechanic in nyc i thought you guys might also appreciate these. They are two old Otis boxes i brought home and now use for tap die and drill storage.. the blow molded tool box was a selector maintenance kit that came with old Otis elevators from the 60s/70s not exactly sure. And the cabinet may be even older if I had to guess. It fit my huot drill boxes perfectly but I was wondering if you guys had a suggestion of how you store your dies. Right now they are in a tackle type box but I have to many so the overflow is just in that loose wood drawer. Looking for something better that might fit in there if you guys have any suggestions.

I have one 5 drawer roll a way that is just for taps, dies, bits & misc removers. I just like using drawers for storage, easy to label and find.

I use the Hout boxes only for my drills.

I keep each size tap, die, thread chaser together as I find this is more efferent use of space for me.

I like this a lot, I have too many taps from buying up various machinist tool boxes that had them in there. I was thinking about setting some sort of drawer I could put the round lista type dividers in kinda like this for.just the dies. This is what the tap drawers looks like right now.

That Otis cabinet is very cool. For 2 Years I worked in NYC across the street from the original Otis Elevator Corporate office in Chelsea NYC. I have a vintage picture of the Otis Building and the lot that became the Starrett-Lehigh building (where I worked for 2 years pre-c19) hanging here above my desk at home.

The Otis flag is flying over the building on the right. In 2020 the area was a little seedy but with Hudson Yards sprouting up 4 blocks north the area was turning around - again pre c19. This image is available for viewing on Shorpy and prints can be purchased from linked vendors.

Several years ago I went to an Estate Sale where they were selling some vintage Bell Telephone equipment cabinets - 6 foot tall art deco style cabinets - and I regret to this day not buying them. I'm glad you kept you Otis cabinet alive.

Cheers

That picture is amazing! I am def going to order one for the shop. I love pictures of old new york. I'm really pleased how that cabinet came out it was banged up and poorly spray painted red. If you look at the inside of the door thats the original Otis green but this was the closest I could find. I know of two more cabinets like this still on some of my other jobs. I think I might try and get those as well now. This is a picture of it right after I sanded some of the old paint drips off.

Did they actually have an elevator in the building? Or did they have to use the stairs?

This is somewhat un-related but I think you might find it cool. This is a picture I took of an otis fly ball governor still in operation in my area.
