How to finish / prep this bare concrete?

Hi guys,

First big thanks for all the info and inspiration here. I’ve been living in my current home for 6 years now and am finally getting round to Making the garage useable starting with the floor.

Currently there are gaps / foam insulation around the edges where the concrete was poured over the insulation and there is a raised drain in the centre of the floor.

If I was laying ceramic tile I guess this wouldn’t be a problem, but I was planning on just painting and some rubber / pvc garage tiles so I’m not sure how I should deal with those areas.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

With a disposable snap blade knife you should be able to trim that foam board off flat with the slab. The drain is a bit more of a problem. I would probably get a square drain cover from HD and cut out its shape around the round hole in the concrete with grinder equipped with a cheapo diamond blade from HF. That way I could recess the drain cover so it’s level with or slightly below the floor level. You can finish any irregularities around drain cover with some patching concrete. I would want to keep leaves, gravel, parts out of the drain.

Around the edges if I trim away the insulation foam should I patch the remaining gap somehow? I’m a little concerned about moisture sitting there…

I’ve seen Round drain cover / grate things maybe I can find one to fit this pipe and then try to level it with the floor as you suggest.

Edit something like the attached photo maybe?

I would expect the amount of water going down between the wall and slab to be very little. If it concerns you, just trim the foam a little lower and apply Sikaflex caulking to the joint. I recommended a square drain as it’s generally easier to cut a square recess in the concrete with a grinder than a round recess.
