What makes Wilton bullet vises so desirable?

It has been covered already, but I think there are certain Wiltons that are considered very nice vises. I bought a tradesman to flip, and didn't think it was anything special. But the C-series seam to be stout little buggers. They would be ideal for outdoor work benches, as the majority of the working parts aren't exposed to the elements.

I believe the round shaft is steel. Wilton doesn't say. but if it is, it would not be a good candidate for outdoor use.

Ahhh, I think almost every service truck I see with a vise on the back, it's a Wilton. So...they might all argue with you on that? Not a fan boy, just going by what I see when out driving. And...what my wife has sent me pics of (yes, my wife is fully aware of her husband being an idiot!).

Find me a mass production vise with a shaft/slide that's made from anything other than carbon steel or cast iron!

Cast iron does not corrode like steel. It gets a light closed coat of oxide and stops. Steel will continue to rust until there is nothing left.

I guess I will have to open a big secret to the author of this post:

Wilton vise were just regular average vise and not too many people wanted them. However, one day a member of GJ found a rusty one and got it for a great deal. He/she restored it and posted it here. Subsequently multiple members of this site bought one, then two, then... Well, the GJ bug spread and all the Wilton vises which could be bought cheaply got bought. This lead to scarcity and desire of more GJ members to buy and collect them... Two years later: you can not find one for a good price! GJ members are searching internet day and night to buy them!!!

So they can polish them, put them on a shelf behind glass, and admire them.
