Atlas Drill Press Restoration

I'm finishing up restoring an Atlas model 63 drill press. As I was replacing the quill/spindle bearings I forgot to place the spacer cylinder sleeve back on the spindle between the bearings. Is this spacer necessary? Trying to decide if I need to take apart and add spacer or if I can use without.

Can't answer your question, but I bought an Atlas 9360 bandsaw a couple of weeks ago. I think it was made in 1954. In pretty nice shape and I am restoring it functionally, not cosmetically.

Usually spacers between bearings transfer loads though the bearing races. Just guessing, I bet it is necessary.

Hi All (New member) I just rescued this ATLAS Modell 63 (see base plate photo) that someone had put in the trash. I'm a woodworker and have restored mostly hand tools in the past, but now have multiple projects taking my attention. Basically, I don't know what to do with this. I doesn't feel right to chuck it and I can't take up the shop space. Any suggestions or interest in this machine, please let me know. I'm in Naples, FL.
Alf

That's too nice of a drill press to not find a spot for it in your space...

Get rid of something else, to make room for, and keep the Atlas...

Sorry guys. I was conflicted about what to do with this trashed treasure and I didn't hear from anyone here soon enough, so it's gone. However, it did not get thrown out (the original sin) and still lives on, so to speak, parted out on eBay (I didn't make much). Pieces went to Calif, Michigan and even Alaska. I kept the base, table and column as a stand for my grinder. Well made machine that still worked true after all these 70-80 years.
