Nice find on USA stuff at Lowes clearance table

I got the last set from the local Lowes today. I had to hunt for the discount shelf for 10 minutes before finding it. All the Dasco stock was on the shelf, but only about half of it was marked down.

I also picked up a Flat Utility Chisel that's about 12" long. If you look closely at my set the thin punch in the middle is bent. I should be able to straighten it easily, but I guess that goes to show that just because it's USA doesn't mean it's better across the board.

Maybe that's why they are so cheap? Why didn't you guys grab a set that wasn't bent, or was there no more left?

Come on why is that being a d-bag? The product wasn't 100% solid, go back and get a discount!

Trust me, Lowes won't shut down because they gave you another discount!

I thought that went to show that thin metal bends easy.

Today I picked up the punch & chisel set for $11 (regularly $30), a nail puller for $7 (regularly $17) and a 3" cold chisel for $3 (regularly $10). All USA-made.

Both of the Lowe's that are semi-local to me were completely out of anything Dasco or Estwing, shelves full of yellow Bostitch stuffs. Looks like I got there a bit late.

Not to be rude, but I think the thin punch thing is being blown out of proportion... 1/16" welding wire, which is the same size as the punch tip, bends if you look at it funny.

In this case, there's a fine balance between making the punch too soft so that it bends too easily but won't break, or too hard so that it won't bend but snaps like a twig.

I checked mine and it is that perfect hardness where it is still bendable, but strong and not brittle. I don't think a slightly bent 1/16" diameter punch reflects on anything... besides how thin it is.


I ended up with TWO of the long 3/4" cold chisels... anyone want to trade me for one of equal value, perhaps the flat chisel or something?

UPDATE. I had to go back to Lowe's to pick up some stuff for work. Walking around there, I found the Dasco stuff (what was left of it), hanging up on an end cap. They seemed to have eliminated their normal clearance section. Three or four different items, and most of it was either 14 or 18 cents each. Needless to say I grabbed most of it, heck I could garage sale what I don't use, and make money.

Two days ago the Dasco stuff wasn't on sale. Today I got the $31 set for $6.30. They had a few of the other things for between $1 and $2. I guess they were just slow getting them marked down.

I'm a broken record here, but vote with your wallets! The big chinese boxes are there to make money and will sell what is acceptable to the buyers. If nobody buys the cheap **** they won't sell it anymore. If the demand is there for quality US/Canadian/German made product thats what they will sell. Buy local, support your local family owned hardware stores that sell quality items.

Haha I would buy from the country hardware store down the road if the PB blaster didnt cost 11 bucks...

Those punches look just like the Craftsman set I have had for many years. I wonder if it's the same manufacturer?

I went in a couple days ago and picked up a center punch and and another punch each for $1.60 and then went back abd got the 6pc pin punches for $5, my Lowes doesn't have a clearance section, they just keep the stuff on the shelf and put clearance tags on them, I also picked up 3 5gal pails of drywall primer too. That was great as I was just finishing up the drywall in the shop.

Normally whenever mine has clearance stuff, they'll set up a folding table in the middle of the open area in the tool section where all of the benchtop power tools are.

They usually set up on friday night or saturday morning, and then if the stuff isn't moved by sunday, they'll hang a 50% off clearance price sign to move it out fast.





Anyways, I posted this thread hoping to help one or two people get a good deal, looks like more than a couple did so I'm happy!
