Big Baldor

Got this nice 12" grinder on flea-bay last fall.
Specs-
2x12 Wheel
3 H.P.
220/440 3 Phase (No problem, have 220 3 Phase line power in shop )
Prewired 220
Lighted eye shields.
It runs so smooth you can hardly tell its running.
Brand new old stock from 1989 (I think).
Around $2200-$2300 new with pedistal
Never had a wheel on it 'till I put that little 10" on her.
My two favorite brands, Baldor motors & Allen Bradley controls - It don't get any better.
Oh, the best part of all, price $150.00 Yah, gotta luv it.

Allen Bradley manual starter probably costs more than 150 bucks. (he he he)

Don't think Baldor makes any bigger than 14".

I've been fortunate to snag 2 smaller Baldor bench grinders. I have one as a dedicated polishing/finishing setup, and the other is a grinder.

Ironically Baldor is a Customer of mine.

Don't think Baldor makes any bigger than 14".

CNC-Me, that is an amazing deal. I looked for over a year to find an 8" Baldor grinder with little use on it and got it for less than $250. (retail $750.) and thought I did pretty good but you win. I can tell you there is no comparison with my 3/4 horse Baldor and that 6" Craftsman I replaced it with. I know my 8" Baldor can ****** your hand off if you are not paying attention to what you are doing, I would hate to think what that monster of yours could do to you. That is mechanical art - Impressive deal!!

I think Baldor makes the whole grinder,with their own motors of course.

Was not even looking for a grinder, but for 150, just had to have it.
Got a nice 10" 110 Volt, a number of years ago,that works great.
The bad part is both of them need new wheels, & wire brushes,
going to cost more than what the grinder cost.
Oh well, the wheels are what does the work...

Used to have a Taiwan 8", lasted about 15 years then the motor burned
out. Got a used 10" Baldor for $200 from the local scrap yard,still haven't got
around to painting it.
Runs nice and smooth just like its bigger brother.
Beats the pants off, any of the imported stuff.

I picked up a used baldor 8", with light, wheels, and a baldor pedestal the other day for $240, and i thought I had a good deal. This is nice.

too bad it didn't have wheels installed, although if you look around you can find surplus grinding wheels in the large diameters pretty cheap. If you buy them from MSC it'll cost you.

I'm lucky to have it (3 Phase).
Its a real asset for any shop, only have 100A service but can still start
a 20 horse motor if I need to.
You could buy/make a rotary converter, not as good as line power,
but gets the job done.
This spring, I built up a 30HP converter for a guy to run a 20 HP wide belt sander.
Went to the scrap yard and got a 30 horse Baldor motor for the idler.
Put new bearings in and painted, came out good, the guy picked it up
before I got a chance to take any pictures though.

You ****! That is one bad oscar of a grinder! I've used that same model at work for years, it will remove whatever you feed it, be careful it is powerful.

Double suckage awarded. Having 3 phase in your shop is handy and when buying used equipment, you cut out 3/4 of your competition.

It come from a hardware store in Washington DC.
They had it listed under drill presses.
No one even bid on on it.
The lights are 120V with plugs on them, did not want all the extra
wires going out the back, so cut off the plugs, and wired them in series to
the bottom of motor starter.
Now when you turn on the grinder the lights come on as well.
If one bulb burns out the other will go out too (no big deal).
Sure beats having to have a transformer or 220V bulbs.
It even come with the liquid-tite conduit all pre-wired (you can see it in the pics).

Was not not even looking for one, just stumbled into the thing.
Perfectly happy with the 10" I have, but for 150 why not upgrade.
