Wilton woodworkers rapid vise repair problem

I have a vintage Wilton rapid or quick action 7” woodworkers vise. The nut does not engage the acme thread properly. The nut with pin and spring are present, but the spring does not appear to engage the pin properly. I am open to recommendations for a fix before risking damage to the spring, or modifying the nut to make it usable again.

Try here for advice, and pix. Orientation is important, as some quick release vises won't work when inverted.

Excellent advice.
I have an old Abernathy quick acting wood vise and it definitely doesn't work when upside down. I tested it.
