Sundays Report

Taking the day to read the paper and get some of the stuff in the office done.

Monday may see me back in my workshop, but I am not making any promises. The possibility of my doing something constructive is very probable.

Monday Morning;
Got Service Ordered for a refrigerator at a rental
Called Computershare and got my part tine employees account fixed.
Ordered a new prescription for my meds.
Called Insurance Broker for a new ID for one of the cars.
Found out my Trainer is no longer testing positive for Covid and will be here tomorrow.

My brother has it. It’s pretty fast. Can’t say if faster than fiber but it’s much better than the copper broadband he was using
Thanks. I'm going to make the switch from AT&T fiber to 5G wifi when it becomes available. I'm paying $55/mo for fiber and 5G wifi would be $35/mo for me. Then I just need to get rid of my $173/mo cable bill.

Busy last few days in the garage. While we had the BMW up on the lift, we used the Alfa for going out to dinner and groceries. Since we were getting real close to finishing up one car and making it perfect, the Alfa decided it was it's turn. So the clutch pedal started occasionally just going to the floor. It got worse and more often the closer we got to finishing up the BMW to the point that I sometimes had no clutch. So as soon as we completed getting the BMW up to snuff, I put the Alfa up on the lift for its turn. I was hoping that we would have 100% fleet availability but nope, something had to break.

So for the last few days (retired so jobs get spread out while we work at our pace), we have been replacing the clutch Master Cylinder, hose, and Slave cylinder in our 1969 Alfa. The Master Cylinder was the cause of our problem but I wasn't delighted with our slave cylinder (I had rebuilt it when we rebuilt the engine & transmission 3 years ago but the mixture of parts I used wasn't what I would normally used).

Fairly straightforward with the usual stumbles and hassles except the "not needed to be replaced slave cylinder" turned into a big hassle. The replacement slave cylinder was about 2mm shorter between the circlips than the old one. Turns out that the spring holder that fit between circlips on the 1969 model was not used on every model or any other year. I just happened to have an oddball. That led to grinding and extra work. Then realized the new circlips that shipped with the slave cylinder were just slightly too small. Had to reuse the old ones. Finally got it all done today and all is well. But it started raining so a road test will have to be delayed a few days.

Spent the evening trying to get a free go kart running with my 9yo son.

It has spark, but it looks like the carb is totally gummed up. The fuel that came out of the float bowl smelled horrible. I emptied it and now it's not filling back up.

Got the garage cleaned up. Even emptied a couple of boxes, then threw out 6 cases of some health drink roomies son bought... which expired in April 2018.
Bled the clutch & put new foam around the instrument binnacle on the ZX11. Somehow managed to buy the exact right sort from the countless thousands on Amazon.
Bought some cheap plastic "oil seal cleaning tool" that was claimed to fix a leaky seal without having to replace it. Appears to have worked, time will tell... Back in the day we used a piece of film negative to do the same thing.

However, every ******** day for the past 2 or 3 weeks I intended to open up the switch clusters on the handle bars for IRAN & still haven't got around to it.

Checked the bike. No gas leaks. Took it out. Several hours later, brought it back inside. Measured a few spots for a big TV.
Yes. I know I said I'd never have a TV in the shop. Well.... I want my to-do list and customer calendar accessible from my desk, or the shop, or my tablet, or phone. It would also be nice to watch a TooYube shiteo about something I'm torturing on the bench. So, yeah, I'll be hooking up a big TV as a monitor. I will not be watching As The Stomach Churns reruns on it while ripping plywood.

It’s a slippery slope, next thing you know you’ll have TMZ and Access Hollywood playing in the background..lol

Real Housewives of Atlanta?
Eeeeew! I'm not a TV girl. I didn't have a TV till the early 70's, and even then I never really watched it. Maybe for a week, till I was totally disgusted. Only had it cause it was nearly free. The things I watch are Jeopardy, some PBS murders,,,,,,,, that's about it. I'm a read, do, and maybe listen to the radio girl. I've only recently come to appreciate the instructive value of some TooYube content, so that's my secondary use case. It won't be hooked to the OTA antenna cluster.

'Slippery Slope' is a different pay channel.

I just yesterday remounted my distraction device into a corner of my garage workshop where it can cause accidents across the entire garage.

Just unloaded this heavy thing into the garage. 220#+ Unboxing and assembly later, and disassembly of the broken-down Craftsman and salvaging of a few good bits and blades.

After the new saw is assembled I'll get my rolling work table unparked and use the new saw to rip some shims for my work table chassis to bring its deck height up to match the new table saw ht. Have to add about 1" and I have plenty of remnant dimensional lumber to cut from.

And in a few days I can start turning $$ into sawdust, crafting some new furniture / cabinets / bookshelves.

Fixed a broken fish finder, it crapped out on me in the backwoods of Ontario. I came close to bashing it's little electronic heart out with a big stone.
Replaced a throttle cable on the push weed wacker.
3d Printed a spring loaded box for breakables
Moved the 3d wrench holders and pegboard into the toolbox drawer.
It was a good day!

I've had a retired 55" TV in the corner waiting to be a shop TV for about 4 years now. I've probably spent more time walking to the house to look something up or watch utube than it would have taken to install and run ethernet out there.

Love your boat tail Alfa. Back in the early '70's I had a '66 Duetto, dark blue with red interior, one of the first 200 Duetto's made. Firmly in the "never should have sold it" category.

Took a while, with a few minor setbacks during assembly, but I got my shiny new Delta 'contractor' grade table saw assembled and it's a beauty. Big upgrade for me. Have to shim up the deck on my big rolling table to match the height of the new saw, and then it is on to several furniture making projects.
I also got some clamp racks mocked up in pine to see how I like the layout. Once the furniture making starts in earnest I'll have some oak offcuts to make the permanent racks. The ears of the pine ones will just snap off. Especially on the heavy pipe clamps.

Honey do.
My wife is expanding her off the wall foot stools, has one bathtub claw foot, needs two more.
It appears every one available in the world is unique, not like hers.
So, from my 1964 metal shop class memory I decided to replicate by sand casting.
Surprise, surprise, it actually came out great. I deviated from talc/ baby powder for the bottom side and substituted cling wrap due to the depth & convolutions.
Made both drag, cope & crucible out of scrap. Used my homemade coal fired forge and 52 Fosters oil cans.

This POS was dropped off yesterday with no warning, no crank no start.

Blown fuse in the ignition circuit. Jumped the starter solenoid and it cranked, but no start. Bypassed the kill relay and it cranked and started. Tested the relay and it tested bad. Installed a new relay and a new fuse and all is well there... except for the huge amount of oil this thing is burning. Looks like a 2 stroke.

50 psi compression on one side and 80 on the other..

Still setting things up for a spate of furniture building. I've been converting the 3rd stall of our residential attached 3-car into my workshop, but even so there's not enough room. So temporarily relocating (and modifying) by large rolling work table to the center stall and just finished shimming up the work surfaces of that table to be flush with the deck height of my new table saw.

Probably going to rearrange a bunch of my stuff in the workshop, most of it is on wheels, so the large work table is more central in the work space. It usually lives docked against the side wall of the garage under full-length hanging cabinets. But now I need the headspace for assembling furniture cabinets and bookshelves.

Nothing too exciting, but finally started the CBX after about 10 years after getting the carbs rebuilt, tank cleaned out and some other odds and ends. Seems to run ok. Took it for a short ride around the block after the vid. Unfortunately my iPhone mostly picked up the clutch rattle (normal on these bikes) more than the engine running.

My metal shop class was in about 68 and sand casting was not exactly part of it, but we did the box mold frames with the special dirt or whatever it is. I was not very good at it.

Watching the movie”The Last Indian”where Anthony Hopkins character was making his own pistons, I got interested in the process. After a little research, I realized I wasnt nearly skilled or patient enough..lol Nice work.
