10 years ago my wife and I set a goal to have a dedicated shop/workspace. I'll admit it seemed impossible at the time. I still vacillate between excitement and "I'll believe it when I see it."

But we have gradually made the room in our finances and less gradually in our back yard. We sold our starter home on a postage stamp for something most with a shop out back would consider small- but it's big enough for us.

Then earlier this year we secured the necessary funding and got to work clearing the site of trees. A few weeks later we had chosen a builder and put a deposit on a 30x40 pole building with a length-wise lean-to we'll use as an outdoor porch space.

So after all those years waiting, we get to wait a little bit more! Our builder has a 6 month back log before they get to us. We have been spending the wait time planning every other detail. To that end this forum has been a wonderful asset!

We do have an attached 2-car garage tightly packed with tools, one of the daily drivers, one of the project cars and a not insignificant quantity of spare parts. So plans for migration are coming together.

I hope to share more from and about the build in the near future. While I don't think what we are wanting is unique, it doesn't get shared much on the internet it seems.

Welcome to the Forum from South Western California. Looking forward to learning about your progress towards your goal of a “real shop, all your own.

Well I introduced the shop (plans) but not myself.

I'm Mark. My wife and I have three young kids. They are pretty great!

I have spent most of my professional career in the industrial/manufacturing sector. Currently and for the past few years I have been designing specialized equipment for the railroad industry. I have also worked for Tier 1 automotive suppliers.

My shop-space hobbies are general auto maintenance and repair, and some modification/restoration. Other Tinkerer/maker style projects work their way in sometimes too.

I hope to get back into some light machining and fabrication in the near future so there will be some space saved for that type of equipment in the new shop.

I do also like to take things apart for the sake of seeing what's inside and how it works. That's one thing about me that has not changed since my pre-school days.

I got a small sign the other day that things are still going on quietly in the background- our county has a decent online GIS map and parcel viewer available online. I'm always curious who one what around me and so on... checking it the other day it looks like the builder has submitted some form of documentation or pulled permits because the site of the new structure shows a pending sub-address. strange, but encouraging.
